My Cell - New Camaldoni Hermitage - Big Sur, California
I had a month in May 2013 to explore Big Sur and the little white Fiat scooted me up and down and all around. I spent one of the weeks here, in silent retreat, above the Pacific. A wonderful experience (Catholicism optional).

Actually I believe Rain Rocks is in Lucia. A concrete tunnel designed to look as though it were made from stone blocks. Then there's Pitkins Curve nearby which rounds offs a great section (and arguably the most scenic) of the PCH.
BIG SUR - USA Travel Guide | Around The World
Big Sur is a region on the Central Coast of California. It contains vast wildernesses and breathtaking views as it stretches 90 miles along the rugged Pacific Ocean. It is approximately 150 miles south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. The area is great for outdoor recreation and contains several state parks, two national wilderness areas and is part of the Los Padres National Forest, all of which include hiking trails. The most common visitors to Big Sur are those just driving through to enjoy the scenery. The next most common activity is hiking/backpacking in the open natural spaces.
California Highway 1 (also known as Pacific Coast Highway) winds through Big Sur flanked by the steep Santa Lucia Mountains to the east and the rocky Pacific Coast to the west. Big Sur begins just south of Carmel and continues south through the small towns of Big Sur Village (between Andrew Molera State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park), Lucia, and Gorda. It ends in San Simeon (where the Hearst Castle is located). When driving on Highway 1 through Big Sur be sure to stop at the many turnouts and vista points to see the beauty of the area.
Big Sur Village is a mile-long village containing gas stations, roadside markets, lodges and restaurants.
Big Sur is known as a destination for the Merry Pranksters in the 1960s. For more information visit the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, which is continually updated with a Calendar of Events.
Bixby Bridge, 11 miles north of Big Sur Village. Iconic bridge built in 1933. One of the most photographed in the world because of its location within such beautiful scenery.
Henry Miller Memorial Library, Highway 1, a quarter mile south of Nepenthe Restaurant, 831-667-2574. Wi-Fi internet access.
Point Sur Lighthouse, 5 miles north of Big Sur Village. Point Sur is a dominant feature along Highway 1. It is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the only complete turn-of-the-century light stations open to the public in California. Allegedly one of the most haunted places in America. Spectacular views can be had from atop Point Sur. Tours (3 hours) are offered - meet west side of highway at farm gate a quarter mile north of Pt Sur Naval Facility. Winter times Sa, Su 10AM, W 1PM. $10 adult, $5 children.
McWay Falls, 12 miles south of Big Sur Village. One of the most spectacular places anywhere in Big Sur. The falls drop 80 feet onto the beach or tide. There is a hike out to a view point but it can also be seen from the road just before Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
New Camaldoli Hermitage, located in Lucia off Highway 1 (25 miles south of Big Sur village), 831-667-2456,. Monastery offering guided retreats, also sells gifts and food items.
Hiking/backpacking - There are over 80 day hikes, varying in length and difficulty. There are hikes to beaches and vistas along the coast, along rivers and through canyons, and through redwood forests in the Santa Lucia Mts. For longer and more remote adventures, backpacking is an option. There are hundreds of miles of trails through the region, particularly the Ventana Wilderness. Be prepared and know what you are doing before going backpacking in the Wilderness. More information can be found at the Big Sur Ranger Station located 3 miles south of Big Sur Village, 831-667-2315. NOTE: Always check conditions before hiking or backpacking. Hiking areas in Big Sur can be closed down in winter due to mudslides. Know before you go.
Beaches - Remote and pristine beaches are accessible. Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer Beach, and Sand Dollar Beach are the most commonly visited.
Bridge Failure Creates New Reality for Residents
(21 Mar 2017) THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE DRIVING ALONG THE CALIFORNIA COASTLINE ON ICONIC HIGHWAY ONE.
BUT DRIVERS ARE GETTING A RUDE WELCOME WHEN THEY REACH THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE TOURIST TOWN OF BIG SUR...THE ONLY BRIDGE LEADING IN...IS OUT.
SOUNDBITE Shelby O'Hara, Visitor
We were trying to drive down the coast back to San Diego, heard that Big Sur was really cool to drive through, very scenic, so we're a little disappointed.
THE PFEIFFER CANYON BRIDGE PARTIALLY COLLAPSED LAST MONTH AFTER STORMS CAUSED A MAJOR MUDSLIDE.
SOUNDBITE Neil Weller, Bridge Construction Engineer:
This big land mass, which goes up the hill, slid down this canyon, which this column is now stuck in right now. Talking to other bridge people in the state, they've never seen this type of failure. An actual column being displaced a few feet causing the bridge to fall. That's kind of unheard of.
AFTER CREWS DEMOLISH THE BRIDGE, ENGINEERS SAY IT'LL TAKE AT LEAST NINE MONTHS TO BUILD A NEW ONE...
THE MAIN WAY TO CROSS THE CANYON NOW IS IN ONE OF THESE.
YOU CAN SEE WHY IT'S SO CHALLENGING FOR CREWS WORKING IN THE MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPE AND FOR RESIDENTS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE.
SOUNDBITE Carissa Chappellet, Big Sur Resident
Really desperate, not knowing where their next food supply is coming from. So there's been that and there's the fact that the road is closed and there's about four hundred of us stuck in this section.
WHILE ALMOST ALL THE HOTELS, RESTAURANTS AND STATE PARKS ON THIS SOUTH SIDE OF THE BRIDGE ARE CLOSED, THE BIG SUR DELI AND ADJACENT TAPROOM REMAIN OPEN.
THE OWNER HAD TO LAY OFF EMPLOYEES AND MAKES MULTIPLE SIX-HOUR ROUND-TRIP DRIVES A WEEK TO KEEP THE SHELVES STOCKED.
SOUNDBITE Kurt Mayer, Owner - Big Sur Taphouse & Deli:
It's for the locals. In the bad times you gotta try to come through for the people who come through for you all the time.
PERHAPS THE ONE GROUP TAKING THIS IN STRIDE ARE THE TWELVE MONKS LIVING IN THIS MOUNTAINTOP MONASTERY, DESPITE LOSING THEIR MAIN INCOME SOURCE - VISITORS STAYING AT THEIR REMOTE RETREAT.
SOUNDBITE Cyprian Consiglio, New Camaldoli Hermitage:
Our fundamental choice is still to be monks. We didn't come into the life because it was going to be easy (laughs).
THERE IS A WAY TO DRIVE OUT OF SOUTHERN BIG SUR TAKING WINDY, MOUNTAIN ROADS. BUT THE RIDE TO MONTEREY, FOR EXAMPLE, WHICH NORMALLY TAKES ABOUT 30 MINUTES NOW TAKES ABOUT THREE HOURS.
THAT INCONVENIENT ROUTE IS CURRENTLY ONLY OPEN TO LOCALS ON SUPPLY RUNS...BUT EVEN IF IT EVENTUALLY OPENS TO THE PUBLIC, LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS WORRY FEW TOURISTS WILL TAKE THE DETOUR.
SOUNDBITE Kirk Gafill, President - Big Sur Chamber of Commerce:
We as a community simply will not survive in any way that is recognizable without a timely rebuild of that bridge.
COMMUNITY LEADERS ARE CURRENTLY ASKING THE STATE FOR AN EMERGENCY DECLARATION TO HELP SAVE LOCAL BUSINESSES...AND TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN SOLITUDE AND SALVATION.

Bridge damage leaves Big Sur community reeling
(21 Mar 2017) An entire community in California's Big Sur continues to be cut off after the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge failed due to a still active landslide which pushed out one of two columns holding it up.
Heavy rains this winter damaged the span on iconic Highway 1 beyond repair, splitting the touristy Big Sur area in two and stranding more than 400 residents on one side.
Visitors have been blocked from reaching part of the community known for its luxury spas, posh hotels and scenic retreats.
Crews are working to tear down the old span and replace it with a single-span steel bridge across the canyon, which will not sit on the slide.
The main way to cross the canyon now is by air.
By helicopter you can see why it's so challenging for crews working in the mountainous landscape and how difficult life is for residents on the other side of the bridge.
Almost all the hotels, restaurants and state parks cut off when a bridge on the Central California coast crumbled last month remain closed, but Kurt Mayer chose to keep his deli and taproom open - even though it's costing him.
For Mayer, the bridge closure means a six-hour, round-trip route several times a week to buy goods to stock the shelves. He also had to temporarily lay off 11 of his 16 employees.
Yet he's keeping his doors open for locals who need produce, milk and propane.
The New Camaldoli Hermitage, a monastery known for its ocean views, is among the places that have been cut off. The two dozen monks and staff members there have been working on their spiritual fitness.
East of the bridge, a 2-foot-wide trail is under construction to allow people who live south of the damaged span to bypass it by walking about 30 minutes each way through steep terrain. Fire brigade escorts will bring them back and forth in the morning and evening.

Big Sur shuttle service begins
Saturday marked the start of the Big Sur shuttle service, which allows people to move north and south of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge closure. The shuttle takes passengers to a bypass trail inside Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Some people opted out of the shuttle service due to long wait times.

Driving the Pacific Coast Highway at Big Sur 2
I'm from London, England and my favourite drive in the world is the PCH1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco. I've driven it many times, mostly on my own, in both directions (I prefer going north).
For about 90 miles (140 km) from the San Carpoforo Creek to the Carmel River, the road winds and hugs the cliffs of Big Sur, passing various coastal parks in the area. The road is so windy there are a number of sections where the speed limit is 15mph. This is the most spectacular section of an incredibly scenic drive.
This segment of the highway, built between 1919 and 1937, also crosses several historic bridges, including the scenic Bixby Creek Bridge, a reinforced concrete arch with a 320-foot (98 m) span that passes over the Bixby Creek gorge, and the Rocky Creek Bridge.

Ich freue mich jedes Mal wieder, dass dieser tolle Strand so heißt, wie er heißt! :-)
