At 17:06 I briefly track alongside the Grey Lady III which will soon serve as a high-speed ferry between Nantucket and Hyannis. It was returning to port after conducting sea trials.
Skating, ice boating and skate sailing Lake Winnipesaukee
Reports of the best black ice in over a decade propelled me east into the Granite State Feb 15, to Lake Winnipesaukee. The broad expanses of eight inch thick black ice were otherworldly, punctuated with open water at some pressure ridges and great ice pileups at granite jetties. On long Nordic blades a couple of us battled fresh winds from the north, making for heavy going windward and easy gliding to leeward. We skated for a couple of hours.
My mother told me of skate sailing in her youth, something I never put under my belt, mostly because skate sails aren't carried at the sporting goods store. I've planned to make the classic Hopatcong design for years but have yet to get around to it. Tired of missing out, I took a couple of wooden spars, a sheet of Tyvek, some clothesline and lashed it all together from scratch in a Read design, version 1.0.
After lunch I checked out the 30 or so iceboats. The wild winds had one amateur exclaiming he covered more miles today in my iceboat than all month in my car. Another rank beginner said his GPS put his top speed at 53 MPH.
I launched my ultralight rig.
The winds were shifty in the bay, mostly mellow cruising mixed with gusts providing moments of high speed terror when the wind had its way with me, and a couple of wipeouts. With miles of ice on which to slide, that's not as bad as it sounds, luge crash light. Back at the beach the design gathered considerable attention for use of off-the-shelf parts. A great day, I'm beat up and exhiliarated!
MBTA Route 195: Lemuel Shattuck Hospital to Downtown Boston & Park Street Station [FlyerCNG1681]
MBTA Route 195 is a free bus route that goes from the homeless shelter in Shattuck Hospital to Boston Medical Center to New England Medical Center/Tufts Medical Center/MBTA Building to Downtown Boston. This route is all that remains of the 270 Series, as the Mental Hospital and Homeless shelter on long Island was abandoned. Route 195 stops at Boston Medical Center on Tremont Street. Although the stop is not at Boston Medical Center, the stop is approximately close to the medical center of Roxbury. It will also make an unofficial stop at the MBTA building. Which is actually the stop for New England Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center. It is unofficial so it is not announced which is why I had to announce it. The original 195 route would not Service New England Medical Center. Instead it would go via Tufts Medical Center then turn onto Winter Street to turn onto tremont Street. But now it still goes via the old Route 277.

Christmas Eve, Day storm to develop into travel-snarling nor'easter in New England
Merging storms will spread accumulating snow and slippery travel from the central Appalachians to New England, before evolving into a potent nor'easter on Christmas Day.
A storm from the Midwest and a storm along the Atlantic coast are forecast to converge on the northeastern United States by early next week.
Enough snow to shovel and plow is likely from central and eastern Ohio, western and northern Pennsylvania and southern Ontario to Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson.
Snow will spread into the central Appalachians later Sunday or Sunday evening, then northeastward across New York state, northern New Jersey and much of New England later Sunday night into Christmas morning.
Highways that are likely to be the most affected by the storm include Interstate 76, I-78, I-80, I-81, I-84, I-86, I-88, I-89, I-90, I-87, I-93, I-95 and I-390. Expect delays due to slippery runways and deicing operations at Pittsburgh, New York City and Boston.
From just north and east of Philadelphia to New York City, Providence, Rhode Island, and New Bedford, Massachusetts, just enough snow may fall to cover the ground.
Farther south and west from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, New Jersey, Baltimore and Salisbury, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., little or no snow is likely. Little or no rain may fall as well due to a gap in the storm.
Only a light amount of snow seems likely from parts of western Virginia and central Maryland to central and southeastern Pennsylvania, where snowfall will end by daybreak Christmas morning.
However, in areas from central and northeastern New York state to central and northern New England, a substantial snowstorm will unfold that may hinder travel to church services and visits by distant friends and relatives for Christmas Day.
Boston is likely to receive a few inches of snow. Cities that have the potential to receive 6 inches of snow or more from the storm include Albany, New York; Worcester, Massachusetts; Rutland, Vermont; Concord, New Hampshire; and Portland, Maine.
Only if the Midwest part of the storm tracks farther south and both storms merge at a fast pace, may a few inches accumulate farther south over coastal New York state, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Maryland and farther to the southeast over Pennsylvania, according to AccuWeather Chief Broadcast Meteorologist Bernie Rayno.

LARGEST FISH FACTORY VESSEL IN THE WORLD ARRESTED AND SEIZED
Agents from the Peruvian Environmental Prosecutor’s Office boarded the Damanzaihao on the night of May 30th, 2018, as part of an federal criminal investigation based on presumed acts of illegal fishing. Acting on a formal request filed by the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the vessel detained pending further investigation.
The new criminal case is predicated on the same acts of illegal fishing – proven beyond all dispute – that led to the imposition of a multi-million dollar administrative fine in 2016. In addition, Peruvian authorities have also accused the Damanzaihao of polluting the marine environment through the illegal discharge of fluids and effluents while anchored in Chimbote.
Over the past week, the Damanzaihao has twice requested permission to leave port in an obvious attempt to escape the tightening noose. On April 20, 2018, Sea Shepherd delivered a formal letter to the Peruvian Ministry of Production (the agency that issued the multi-million dollar fine) imploring the government to take additional steps to ensure the ship pay for its crimes.
The Damanzaihao is the largest fish factory vessel in the world, capable of processing 547,000 tons of fish per year.

As you begin your search to find an apartment for rent in Arlington, VA, you will come across many massive communities in the area. These complexes will have 200 - 400 units but can even have upwards to 600 and even 800 residences.
You should never rent an apartment from these companies. Here's why:
-- You won't be able to see the apartment before you rent. Many Arlington VA apartments hover between 99% - 93% occupancy rates. This means that your apartment is probably currently occupied and most complexes don't allow potential renters to view occupied units.
You're going to spend 12 months (at least) of your life at an apartment and the management company will not even let you step foot inside your future home.
-- These companies are just trying to make a profit. They are corporations that want your money. They don't have an allegiance toward you or any sort of loyalty whatsoever. Their bottom line is literally their bottom line. So things like working with the front desk and maintenance requests may not be as smooth as if you were working with an individual landlord or working with a much smaller company.
-- They will raise the rent 4% - 9% after one year. They get you into the apartment by offering you one month free on a 13 month lease or 2 months free on a 14 month lease. And let's face it, everybody hates to move. So if you like your apartment, which you may, you're probably not going to want to move. Well once you get the terms of your new lease, that could change.
And good luck negotiating. Because if you can't pay, the apartment companies will find someone who will.
So what should you rent if you shouldn't rent from a large apartment complex in Arlington?
You should rent a house, townhouse, duplex, triplex, small apartment buildings (think 10 - 50 units), or condo.
A condo might be your best bet. Condos are just like apartments except they are individually owned. You work one-on-one with the indiviual landlord. A lot of times condos are more renovated than the apartment counterparts. And since there is ownership invovled, your neighbors will be (hopefully) a little bit more conscientious as they have a vested interest in making the community better. Compared to apartments where it may feel like a long-stay hotel since residents are always moving in and out.
