New Hope Valley Railroad Museum
Outside Raleigh, the New Hope Railroad runs through New Hope and Bonsal. . The line is part of the Durham branch line that was abandoned by the Southern Railroad shortly after the nuclear plant completion. The lake for the Sharon Harris plant put the Right of Way for the railroad under water. The army corps of engineers built the Southern a new Durham branch. The first train on the line started scrapping it from the northern end. The line has a passing siding, which is close to the end of track. The ROW is now a walking trail.
At the original US1 crossing and interchange, CSX removed their connection to the line, as well as the diamond that provided an at-grade crossing of the S line. (They wanted large amounts of money to keep the switch in place for equipment delivery, but the museum felt that was a bad use of limited funds.
The museum has a pair of steamers. They have a small tank engine that is used periodically, and are rebuilding an engine from the Cliffside textile site.
The collection is equipment used for part or all of its life in North Carolina. The 80 ton diesel used for the ride was used at military sites in the state. The others were used at power plants or military bases in the area. They are refurbing a dome car that was not used in the carolians to the best of my knowledge, but would be a nice closed car to have when it is raining.

Christmas Steam Engine Train Ride - New Hope Valley Railway, NC (Dec. 2015)
Uncle Steve Sees A Steam Engine And Train
Uncle Steve stopped by the New Hope Valley Railway in Bonsal, NC, not far from where he often fishes. He saw a steam engine pull a train of open cars and two cabooses. The train goes about five miles up to New Hill and comes back after switching the engine. The same train is pulled on alternate trips by a diesel engine. The tracks, engines and sounds remind Uncle Steve of the rail yard behind the house he grew up in.

We realize this isn't the day that #40 returned to service, but it's our video of her back in action after her mechanical work over the summer of 2011. A big thanks should go to the shop forces who worked tirelessly to get #40 back out on the high iron! At least a few guys in this video are included in that shop force.

Why The US Has No High-Speed Rail
China has the world’s fastest and largest high-speed rail network — more than 19,000 miles, the vast majority of which was built in the past decade.
Japan’s bullet trains can reach nearly 200 miles per hour and date to the 1960s. They have moved more than 9 billion people without a single passenger causality. casualty
France began service of the high-speed TGV train in 1981 and the rest of Europe quickly followed.
But the U.S. has no true high-speed trains, aside from sections of Amtrak’s Acela line in the Northeast Corridor. The Acela can reach 150 mph for only 34 miles of its 457-mile span. Its average speed between New York and Boston is about 65 mph.
California’s high-speed rail system is under construction, but whether it will ever get completed as intended is uncertain.
Watch the video to see why the U.S. continues to fail with high-speed trains, and some companies that are trying to fix that.

Van hit at Bashford RD railroad crossing Raleigh,NC. Myself and friend on news, 04-25-98
On April 25th 1998 My friend and I were just wrapping up from having a yard sale in front of my grandfathers old plumbing Warehouse on the corner of Bashford RD and Hillsborough ST in Raleigh NC. I had just returned from taking a load of stuff we didn't sell back from the house. I remember standing out there [on the corner] talking to Mike and I noticed the van's front end appearing to be sitting over the track. I remember hearing the trains whistle blow and I think I asked Mike if he though the van was too close to the track. I think his response was It looks like it. Next thing I remember was seeing the train appear from the corner of my right eye, my main focus on the van. Trains whistle was blowing like crazy and then as I say in the video It was a BOOM! and a big cloud of smoke
We rushed over there and several people were stopping and running out of there cars and dialing 911 from there cell phones. I don't remember which direction Mike went but I walked about 10-20 feet from the crossing, like your going towards Cary and I remember seeing the boy. He was shaking, probably had a seizure. If I remember correctly, a few more feet from him I saw the daughter and she was motionless. By this point, the Fire dept, EMS and the Raleigh and Cary PD were showing up, so I went back over to my grandparents property to get out of the way. Mike was not far behind me.
When the news crews started showing up I went up to them and told them that my friend and I were eyewitnesses. I think we were also interviewed by WRAL but watching the 2am re-cast that night, we weren't shown. This video was from the 11pm broadcast from ABC-11. I just hate they mis-spelled my last name, LOL.
After the scene was under control and those injured taken to the hospital, we walked back over there, it was still daylight. The engine that was in the van was thrown about 10' feet away (a good 1000' feet from the point of impact) from the Chatam St bridge that is over Interstate 40 (Those who know the area know that Hillsborough ST turns into Chatam ST right at the bridge). Debris was scattered all over the track.
In the aftermath, the people's family filed a lawsuit against CSX and I remember being harassed by a private investigator hired by them. The PI also wanted to speak with Mike but I don't think either him or I said much to him because both of our parents basically told him to leave us alone. After 6-8 months after the wreck however, I was asked to give an interview with an investigator with CSX which I accepted. It was conducted right in front of my granddads old warehouse, where I was standing when I saw the impact. I remember the questions being very thorough but I told the fellow everything I could remember and he was a nice guy to deal with. I don't believe CSX interviewed Mike as I don't believe he saw the actual impact. From what I remember things were settled out of court but CSX wasn't found at fault.
Many people had been killed or injured at this crossing, my father and grandparents have told me many stories, they bought the corner in 1964. Previous to this accident a train hit an 18-Wheeler full of eggs coming from the egg market, my God, it stunk for weeks after that, eggs were strewn up and down the track. The driver was okay however, I remember talking to him that night. Lastly, after this wreck with the van, two more people were killed in December of 2000. For reasons unknown, they were sitting in their car which was parked on the tracks.
The crossing was closed in 2002 and a new service road to access the businesses was cut through to Chapel Hill RD (NC 54).
