Volterra
On a trip around Tuscany in 2008 we visited the town of Volterra perched on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding fields. It was quite active on this day due to a car and motorbike parade. Italian vehicles of all ages flooded the town and parked in main squares.
This town was also the setting for the Volturi in the second Twilight book/movie.

Volterra — Tuscany
Volterra is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. Apart from the historical and cultural attractions that this place offers, it is also an ideal destination in Italy where NOVASOL has many holiday homes. You can visit the ancient fortress of Medicea or stroll through the streets of this beautiful city. Here you will find impressive markets with medieval goods, parades, entertainers and musicians that gather by the main city square called ‘Piazza dei Priori’. In the old streets you will find cozy bars and delicious restaurants where you can taste Tuscan food and great local wine. Volterra is located about 50 kilometers south of Pisa and about 50 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. The city’s core lies on hills at a height of 550 meters. It looks over the Cecina valley which creates a stunning view. The screes seen here have been created through many centuries of soil erosion. In Le Balze towards the northwest of Volterra you will see the largest of these. The largest building in Volterra, which is the old fortress called Medicea, is used as a maximum security prison today. Limited parts of the fortress can be explored by tourists. These parts are, of course, solely the ones without prisoners in them. Do not let this scare you off, the prison is maximum security, and Volterra is a very popular tourist destination in Tuscany great for families and couples alike. Volterra is a central city in some books as well as being the scene where some films are created. It is used as the 3000 year old residence of the largest vampire family in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books. With a NOVASOL holiday home in Volterra you will be able to experience all of these extremely exciting aspects of the city. They cannot be experienced anywhere else. Also in a series of novels by Dudley Pope is this city an important part, so it is safe to say that this is not just any city; it is a culturally and historically very important city in Tuscany, Italy. There is also great food to be tasted in Volterra. Whether you buy it from the market and throw it directly onto the grill, or eat it in a beautifully decorated restaurant does not matter; anything can be done and there are tons of possibilities to try out. Stay with NOVASOL in Volterra and experience this culturally important city with many delicious restaurants and a rich history. Novasol website:

ABOUT VOLTERRA
Volterra is one of the most important towns in Tuscany: its unique position and its ancient history leaves everyone enchanted.
It is located in the east side of the province of Pisa on the borderline of the province of Siena, and located on a hill 550 m above the sea level. And dominates the whole valley of the river Cecina. An open serene landscape surrounds the town: it’s the ideal place for excursions on foot, on horse back or by bicycle.
Volterra’s history dates back from the Etruscan period to the 19th century with artistic and monumental traces of great importance.
Volterra is prevalently Medieval and yet cherishes abundant evidence of the Etruscan period: for instance the Porta all’Arco (the Etruscan gate) which dates from the 4th century B.C., and the Acropolis, the defensive walls which are still visible in parts of the town.
The Roman period is attested by the important remains of the Teatro di Vallebona which date back to the Augustan period, the Baths and an enormous rectangular water cistern.
The Middle Ages are not only visible in its urban structure but too in its buildings, its house-towers and churches: the Palazzo dei Priori, a 13th century building, the Palazzo Pretorio, with its crenellated Tower of the Little Pig, the pair of towers of Buonparenti and Bonaguidi family, the house-towers of Toscano family, the Cathedral (12th century), the Baptistry (13th century) streaked with Volterran stone, the conventual Church of San Francesco with its adjacent chapel of the Croce di Giorno, the Church of San Michele and of San Alessandro.
The Renaissance period has influenced Volterra in a particular way, however without changing the Medieval atmosphere. Some good examples are the Palazzo Minucci-Solaini, beautifully inserted among the Medieval housetowers, the Palazzo Incontri Vitii with its theatre Persio Flacco added in the courtyard in the 19th century, the Palazzo Inghirami, the Palazzo Ruggieri, the Convent of San Girolamo with the terracotta statues of Della Robbia and the Medicean Fortress which looms over the Medieval town.
Apart from its monuments, its art and history, Volterra also offers a magnificent panorama of the gentle undulating hills of the surrounding landscape abruptly interrupted in the West by the Balze (crags). The slow progression of these repeated landslides finally precipitated the destruction of the most ancient Etruscan necropolis, the earliest Christian churches and the ruin of the 11th century Badia Camaldolese.
Jeff & Marge Leaving Volterra Italy, March 29, 2010, Late Afternoon
This was taken toward the late afternoon as we were leaving Volterra. The rolling hills of Tuscany are always spectacular but the colors at this time of day were just that much more intense. Volterra is a must see city in Tuscany.

Places to see in ( Montepulciano - Italy )
Montepulciano is a medieval hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy. Surrounded by vineyards, it’s known for its vino nobile red wine. The Torre di Pulcinella is a clock tower topped by a figure of the Pulcinella, a commedia dell’arte character. On the Piazza Grande is the 14th-century Palazzo Comunale, with a tower offering views of the surrounding countryside. Also here is the Duomo, with a huge triptych above its altar.
Exploring the medieval town of Montepulciano, perched on a reclaimed narrow ridge of volcanic rock, will push your quadriceps to failure point. When this happens, self-medicate with a generous pour of the highly reputed Vino Nobile while also drinking in the spectacular views over the Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia.
Standing high atop a hill in southern Tuscany not too far from Siena, Montepulciano is a medieval town of rare beauty highly recommended visiting in Tuscany. The city, full of elegant Renaissance palaces, ancient churches, charming squares and hidden corners, boasts vast panoramas all over the wonderful Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana valleys that surround it.
