New Orleans Jazz Fest 2019: Preview the 50th Annual New Orleans Jazz Fest & More 2019 Jazz Festivals
There are hundreds of jazz festivals across the country every year. Some have been going for over 50 years – like the New Orleans Jazz Fest! That's a lot of wailin' sax. Here are three of the biggest springtime favorites.
New Orleans Jazz Fest 2019
Let's start our list of 2019 jazz festivals in the Big Easy for the 50th Anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson kicked off the first New Orleans Jazz Fest back in 1970, and the event has gotten a lot bigger since. Around 400,000 music fans descend on this fiesta. In fact, it's so huge that it even draws non-jazz superstars like Katy Petty and Chris Stapleton, as well as lesser-known up-and-comers. Bonus: there's a motherload of Cajun cuisine and one-of-a-kind arts and crafts. The New Orleans Jazz Fest runs from April 25th through May 5th with tickets starting at around $75.
Jacksonville Jazz Festival 2019 – Jacksonville, Florida
Let’s continue our 2019 jazz festivals tour by heading east to the Sunshine State for the 2019 Jacksonville Jazz Festival. On Memorial Day weekend, Downtown Jacksonville goes mad for jazz. The 2019 Jacksonville Jazz Festival is the second largest in America with two stages and ten blocks of music, food, shopping and entertainment. And best of all, it's free! The 2019 Jacksonville Jazz Festival kicks off May 23rd and goes through the 26th.
Rochester International Jazz Festival 2019 – Rochester, New York
Finally, let’s end our road trip of 2019 jazz festivals in New York for the 2019 Rochester International Jazz Festival. More than 1,500 artists from around the world play over 300 shows at 20 indoor and outdoor venues. The 2019 Rochester International Jazz Festival runs from June 21 through the 29th and tickets start at around $35.

New Orleans is a consolidated city-parish located along the Mississippi River in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Louisiana. With an estimated population of 393,292 in 2017, it is the most populous city in Louisiana. A major port, New Orleans is considered an economic and commercial hub for the broader Gulf Coast region of the United States. New Orleans is world-renowned for its distinct music, Creole cuisine, unique dialect, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The historic heart of the city is the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture and vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street. The city has been described as the most unique in the United States, owing in large part to its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. Founded in 1718 by French colonists, New Orleans was once the territorial capital of French Louisiana before being traded to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
New Orleans, Louisiana - New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park (2020)
New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is a U.S. National Historical Park in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, near the French Quarter. It was created in 1994 to celebrate the origins and evolution of jazz.
Most of the historical park property consists of 4 acres (16,000 m2) within Louis Armstrong Park leased by the National Park Service. There is a visitor center at 916 North Peters Street and a concert venue, several blocks away in the French Quarter. The Park provides a setting for sharing the cultural history of the people and places which helped to shape the development and progression of jazz in New Orleans. National Park Service staff present information and resources associated with the origins and early development of jazz, through interpretive techniques designed to educate and entertain.
The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. After New Orleans (La Nouvelle-Orléans in French) was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city developed around the Vieux Carré (Old Square in English), a central square. The district is more commonly called the French Quarter today, or simply The Quarter, related to changes in the city with American immigration after the Louisiana Purchase. Most of the extant historic buildings were constructed either in the late 18th century, during the city's period of Spanish rule, or were built during the first half of the 19th century, after U.S. annexation and statehood.
The district as a whole has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, with numerous contributing buildings that are separately deemed significant. It is a prime tourist destination in the city, as well as attracting local residents. Because of its distance from areas where the levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as well as the strength and height of the nearest Mississippi River Levees in contrast to other levees along the canals and lakefront, it suffered relatively light damage from floodwater as compared to other areas of the city and the greater region.

Founded in 1718 by French colonists, New Orleans was once the territorial capital of French Louisiana before being traded to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. New Orleans in 1840 was the third-most populous city in the United States, and it was the largest city in the American South from the Antebellum era until after World War II. The city's location and flat elevation have historically made it very vulnerable to flooding. State and federal authorities have installed a complex system of levees and drainage pumps in an effort to protect the city.
New Orleans was severely affected by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, which resulted in flooding more than 80% of the city, thousands of deaths, and so much displacement because of damaged communities and lost housing as to cause a population decline of over 50%. Since Katrina, major redevelopment efforts have led to a rebound in the city's population. Concerns about gentrification, new residents buying property in formerly closely knit communities, and displacement of longtime residents have been expressed.
French Quarter Fest 2016
This is the largest free music festival in the south. April is one of the best times to come to New Orleans. The weather is usually perfect this time of year. It starts with four days of French Quarter Fest where hundreds of bands play on twenty-three outdoor stages around the French Quarter and by the Mississippi river. At the end of the month, there is the Zurich PGA golf tournament and two weekends of Jazz Fest going into May. I was only able to capture a small portion of all of the festivities including food, sights, and music. I start out by driving across the longest bridge in the United States, the Causeway bridge, which is 24 miles long and built in 1956. Once we arrive, we meander around and see a few of the bands and the sights. I don't go to New Orleans very often but when I do, it is always enjoyable. There is a lot of great music on Frenchmen Street at night which is off the beaten Bourbon St. path and the best place to go for real music.
I end the video with my cute grandson living in Spain just because I think he is the cutest and I wanted to show him off a little. They just had another baby boy and my new grandson on April 7th.
