Edinburgh Old Town is the name popularly given to the oldest part of Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh. Edinburgh Old Town has preserved much of its medieval street plan and many Reformation-era buildings. Together with the 18th-century New Town, Edinburgh Old Town forms part of a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Royal Mile is a name coined in the early 20th century for the main artery of the Old Town which runs on a downwards slope from Edinburgh Castle to both Holyrood Palace and the ruined Holyrood Abbey. Narrow closes (alleyways), often no more than a few feet wide, lead steeply downhill to both north and south of the main spine which runs west to east.
Notable buildings in the Old Town include St. Giles' Cathedral, the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, the National Museum of Scotland, the Old College of the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Parliament Building. The area has a number of underground vaults and hidden passages that are relics of previous phases of construction. No part of the street is officially called The Royal Mile in terms of legal addresses. The actual street names (running west to east) are Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, Canongate and Abbey Strand.
In addition to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Old Town may be divided into various areas, namely from west to east:
West Port, the old route out of Edinburgh to the west
Grassmarket, the area to the south-west
Edinburgh Castle
The Cowgate, the lower southern section of the town
Canongate, a name correctly applied to the whole eastern district
Holyrood, the area containing Holyrood Palace and Holyrood Abbey
Croft-An-Righ, a group of buildings north-east of Holyrood
Due to the space restrictions imposed by the narrowness of the tail, and the advantages of living within the defensive wall, the Old Town became home to some of the world's earliest high rise residential buildings. Multi-storey dwellings became the norm from the 16th century onwards. Many of these buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire of Edinburgh (1824); the rebuilding of these on the original foundations led to changes in the ground level and the creation of many passages and vaults under the Old Town. The construction of new streets including North Bridge and South Bridge in the 18th century also created underground spaces, such as the Edinburgh Vaults below the latter.
Traditionally buildings were less dense in the eastern, Canongate, section. This area underwent major slum clearance and reconstruction in the 1950s, thereafter becoming an area largely of Council housing. Further Council housing was built on the southern fringe of the Canongate in the 1960s and 1970s in an area generally called Dumbiedykes. From 1990 to 2010 major new housing schemes appeared throughout the Canongate. These were built to a much higher scale than the traditional buildings and have greatly increased the population of the area.

250 years ago, Edinburgh launched a competition to design a 'New Town' for the Scottish capital. The city desperately needed an upgrade - it was overcrowded, filthy and crumbling. With Scotland a partner in the new United Kingdom, it needed a capital to be proud of. At the same time, Edinburgh was seen as the intellectual capital of Europe - with Adam Smith, David Hume and other figures of the 'Scottish Enlightenment' creating an explosion of creative ideas that would change the world. The winning plan by James Craig was a masterpiece of Georgian city planning that reflected these Enlightenment ideas. This film tells the story of how the plan was made real - becoming the most ambitious building project in Britain, and transforming Edinburgh into the most perfect Georgian city on earth.

The best place to begin is a few blocks in front of Edinburgh Castle, high above the city where Edinburgh was first settled. The Edinburgh Video Guide presents the Old Town, the Scottish capital's nucleus. There is evidence of settlement here stretching back to the Bronze Age, but it wasn't until Edinburgh Castle and the The Palace of Holyroodhouse were established that the city began to flourish, in the form of the now famous Royal Mile.

Edinburgh's New Town Charlotte Square to Waterloo Place
Charlotte Square houses some of the most beautiful Georgian buildings in the city. These date back to the late 1700's. The north side of the square is home to Bute House which is the official residence of Scotland's First Minister in the Country's Devolved Parliament. The New Town was conceived as a result of a competition for a design to ease the overcrowded conditions suffered by the residents down from the castle. It became the place for the wealthy to stay - probably still is. The general layout of the original group of buildings was to have a large square at each end of a long street. Today there are many extra streets added but the original Charlotte Square joined by George Street to St Andrews Square still exists. A parallel street to the north is Queen Street while the famous Princes Street runs to the to the south.
This video starts at the West End, the Charlotte Square end then leads the viewer along George Street towards St Andrews Square. Another early idea was to have a major church at each end, these being St George's Church and St Andrews Church. Today the two churches have been amalgamated into St Georges and St Andrews church and these are based, in one building, near the north east end of George Street. The original St George's is now West Register House an important repository for the country's documentation.
This video was made on a very damp and windy day so apologies for the shakiness. Viewers might be interested to note the steepness of the streets running at right angles north and south of George Street. Edinburgh is a very hilly city.
