Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) New Town Hall
Freiburg has the great privilege of having several town halls. However, working out which one is which is not easy, given that the New Town Hall is older than the Old Town Hall, and the city’s oldest town hall is called the Gerichtslaube, or 'Old Court House'.
The reason behind the unusual choice of names lies in the buildings' history. As far back as the late 15th century, King Maximilian I was complaining that the Gerichtslaube was too small and “awkward.” To resolve the lack of space, the Old Town Hall was completed in 1559 to accommodate most of the Freiburg city government. The use of the New Town Hall for city business is relatively recent, given that the University of Freiburg owned it until 1891. Despite its name, the New Town Hall is in fact the older of the two structures. Today, the city’s various government offices and divisions are divided between the two town halls. The rooms of the Gerichtslaube, the Old Court House, are used for official receptions. Tis should give you a basic overview.
The New Town Hall comprises two sumptuous Renaissance buildings joined together by a stately, gabled column entryway. The New Town Hall, as it now appears, dates back to the late 19th century, before which countless modifications were made to the structure. Large bay windows and balconies now adorn the whitewashed building. The interior of the New Town Hall is also a real gem. Elaborate wood carvings and ornamental plaster work on the ceilings create a romantic atmosphere in the spacious rooms. Freiburgers especially like to tie the knot in the former offices of the New Town Hall’s north wing.

Freiburg im Breisgau is located in southwest Germany. With the Black Forest area around it has a reconstructed medieval old town and is also a vibrant university city.
We start the tour in the southern city centre at the Schwabentorbrücke. We head towards the Schwabentor which is a landmark city gate from the Middle Ages. Now on a summer evening in the old town people enjoy relaxing in many of the cities cafés and restaurants.
Near the Martin's Gate we go to several side streets and eventually the Rathausplatz, where the city hall is. We make it to the Freiburg Minster with a 116m spire, which is also impressive inside. This Gothic cathedral towers over the central square Münsterplatz and is one of the main attractions of the city.
We see more of Freiburg's lively streets streets and make it to the west side of the city centre with Freiburg Theatre and the modern design of the university library. Going further to the central station after seeing the Colombi Park the weather gets rainy.
We head back through the whole city and end the tour at the Schwabentor.

Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in the Breisgau region on the western edge of the Black Forest. It straddles the Dreisam river, on the foothills of the Schlossberg. The city is bordered by the Black Forest mountains Rosskopf and Bromberg to the east and Schönberg, Tuniberg to the south. The Kaiserstuhl hill region lies to the west.
Freiburg was founded in the 12th century (1120) by Duke Konrad of Zähringen as a free market town; hence its name, which translates to free (or independent) town the word frei meaning free and Burg, like the modern English word borough, was used in those days for an incorporated city or town, usually one with some degree of autonomy. However, the German word Burg also means a fortified town as in Hamburg. Thus, it is likely that the name of this place means a fortified town of free citizens

Let's go to Freiburg
Hey guys!
Last year I've stayed in Freiburg im Breisgau for a weekend. A good friend of mine lives there and my boyfriend and I visited her. As a child I have been to Freiburg many times, because one big part of my family lives there. But in the last ten years we didn't had the time to go there, so it was a great experience to revisit the city. I discovered many new wonderful places and we really had the perfect weather :)
So here are some impressions of it...

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany )
Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany )
Freiburg im Breisgau, a vibrant university city in southwest Germany’s Black Forest, is known for its temperate climate and reconstructed medieval old town, crisscrossed by picturesque brooks (bächle). In the surrounding highlands, hiking destination Schlossberg hill is linked to Freiburg by a funicular. With a dramatic 116m spire, the Gothic cathedral Freiburg Minster towers over the central square Münsterplatz.
Sitting plump at the foot of the Black Forest’s wooded slopes and vineyards, Freiburg is a sunny, cheerful university town, its medieval Altstadt a storybook tableau of gabled townhouses, cobblestone lanes and cafe-rimmed plazas. Party-loving students spice up the local nightlife. Blessed with 2000 hours of annual sunshine, this is Germany’s warmest city. Indeed, while neighbouring hilltop villages are still shovelling snow, the trees in Freiburg are clouds of white blossom, and locals are already imbibing in canal-side beer gardens. This eco-trailblazer has shrewdly tapped into that natural energy to generate nearly as much solar power as the whole of Britain, making it one of the country’s greenest cities.
Freiburg im Breisgau, or more commonly Freiburg is known as the Jewel of the Black Forest. By German standards it is a major city in southwest Germany, situated on the edge of the Black Forest. When ordering train tickets and similar items online, be careful not to confuse Freiburg (im Breisgau) with Freiburg (an der Elbe) or Fribourg in Switzerland.
Lying in a secluded wine-rich corner of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Freiburg is a laid-back, beautiful university city. Known throughout Germany for Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, good weather, and vineyards, Freiburg is considered by Germans to be a desirable place to live.
Due to its secluded location at the border triangle of Germany, France, and Switzerland, and being fairly removed from any other larger German cities, locals will frequently go shopping in France and Switzerland for their respective native products and go to museums and theaters in Basel or Zürich. One can find a strong local patriotism, which shows itself in the anthem of Baden (a former independent state), which can be heard more often than the national anthem.
Although Freiburg itself is not a major tourist destination or a large city, it can serve as a relatively inexpensive base from which to explore much of central Europe. Thanks to its excellent connections via rail and road to the outside world, Freiburg can easily allow to travel to all of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Benelux countries, and France with little trouble and at good prices. If you plan on an extended stay or travel to these destinations, it can be a welcoming base to return to after each segment of your journey, with more than enough to entertain you for a few days while you stay in Freiburg.

The Historical Merchants' Hall is one of the most outstanding buildings in Freiburg im Breisgau. It is situated on the south side of the Minster Square. It stands out clearly due to its dominant red facade. The first municipal merchants' hall in Freiburg was built in the 14th century as a custom office. It was situated in the Schusterstraße and mentioned in 1378 for the first time in an official document. The building has retained in its present-day form since 1520. At that time the back of the original building was extended and became the new front facing the market square and Freiburg Minster. The building was completed in 1532. The architect of the building is not known, but it is assumed to be Lienhardt Müller (from Ettlingen).
In later years, the merchants' hall underwent multiple modifications. In 1550 a balcony was added, in 1744 the merchants hall needed to be rebuilt due to bomb damage, in 1814 the facade was changed, in 1884 the building was remodeled according to the prevailing taste of the time. In 1924 the changes of 1884 were undone. Its contemporary state dated back to the extensive renovations which it underwent in 1988.
From 1946 to 1947 the building served as the office of the Beratende Landesversammlung (precursor of the Baden Parliament with the task of drawing up the constitution of Baden). From 1947 to 1951 the historical merchants hall served as a legislative building for the South Baden state.
The striking building with its crimson paint and extensive decoration, is situated with its eaves to the Minster Square (Freiburg im Breisgau). The high housetop with two attic stories is lined by crow-stepped gables. From the outside the four arcades with an access balcony facing the Minster are an eye-catching feature of the building. At ground level one enters through a gate a hall, which opens onto an inner courtyard. This hall is only open to the public on special occasions. Situated above the hall is one room that takes up the entire upper floor. The room has so-called arched curtain windows in the late Gothic style with the windows opening onto the market place. Two delicate, polygonal bay windows with colored tiles flank the arched curtain windows on the outside of the building. The front of the building is decorated with sculptures and the crest of the House of Habsburg, which were carved by Hans Sixt von Staufen between 1520 and 1531. The sculptures all have a baldachin and depict Maximilian I (Holy Roman Emperor), Philip I of Castile, Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) and Ferdinand I (Holy Roman Emperor). The statues are replicas as the originals are stored away from the elements in the Basler Hof. The five emblems under each of the bay windows depict territorial dominions belonging to the House of Habsburg.

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Martinstor
The Martinstor, a former town fortification on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, is the older of the two gates of Freiburg im Breisgau that have been preserved since medieval times. Both gates, the Martinstor and the Schwabentor, are located in the city centre. In medieval times the Martinstor was also known as Norsinger Tor.
According to dendrochronological research the wooden beams date back to the year 1202; the gate was first given documentary evidence in 1238 as „Porta Sancti Martini“ (Latin Gate of the Holy Martin). Over the centuries it has been reconstructed several times. At one time, it also served as a prison and it was said of its occupants that they had donned “The Cloak of Martin“.
From the 17th Century on the side of the gate facing the city was decorated with a picture of Martin of Tours. During this time, due to the construction and leveling of the suburbs by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the gate's link to the city was lost. Thus, Salzstraße served as the main access road from Höllental. There have been numerous restorations of the picture, the most recent of which was in 1851 by Wilhelm Dürr. In 1968/69 the picture was removed. To date the local town council has still not been able to decide on a new image. As a result there remains a blank spot in honour of the conflicts between the Freiburg Civil Defence and the French Revolutionary Forces.
The Martinstor underwent its biggest change in 1901. By this point, the surrounding buildings surmounted the old city gate and the old passageway had become too small for the growing city and the new tram infrastructure. Having momentarily considered demolition, the city council opted instead to modify the building. Under the direction of Carl Schäfer the tower was heightened from 22 to 60 metres and a new roof construction in the architectural style of the 15th century was added. An additional gate with a larger thoroughfare, designed in the same architectural style, was erected next to the original gate. A German Reichsadler was painted on the outer facade of the gate above the emblems of Freiburg and of the nearby region of Baden, before it was removed in 1951. A replication of a baroque sandstone plate depicting the Double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire was later installed.
Next to the archway, facing the city center, there is a tablet commemorizing the burning of witches in Freiburg on which three names are engraved: Marghareta Mößmer, Catharina Stadelmann and Anna Wolffart. These women, all citizens of Freiburg, were executed in 1599.
Inside the western part of the arch which was built in 1901, a fast-food restaurant (McDonald’s) is located and announces this with a big sign over the ancient archway. The city council of Freiburg could not keep the company from putting up their sign, but could prevent the prominent red and yellow of the same in favor of a more decent coloring. Due to its conspicuous presence there, much to the consternation of city leaders, some students have referred to Martinstor as McDonald's-Tor.

Once a guardian of Freiburg, the Schwabentor remains a striking memorial to the city's past.
The Schwabentor is a gate tower from the days when Freiburg had defensive walls.
The image on the south side of the tower is St. George, said to be a great slayer of dragons.
Only the Schwabentor and its brother tower, the Martinstor, remain from medieval times.
The newer of the two towers, it was built in 1250 and has been well maintained since.
Today, the Schwabentor is nearly identical to its original structure.
