A Visit to 9-11 Memorial Site
On September 13, 2001 I visited the 9-11 Memorial Site. It was truly an inspirational experience in so many ways. The solitude, solace, serenity and sheer beauty of being one with the elements was spiritually uplifting. I felt as if I became part of a canvas, similar to Seurat's vision in Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George: an aesthetic coalescence of art and reality. It truly was -- IS -- a testament to those lives lost on September 11, 2001. Thank you to all those people whose efforts to make this hallowed ground a spiritual retreat for everyone to reflect, remember, and realize the sacrifices made by those we honor.
We will never forget.

Nassau County 9/11 Memorial
The Nassau County 9/11 Memorial Project carves out the designated space proposed at Eisenhower Park. The central focus of the memorial is two interconnected polished aluminum towers that are constructed from aluminum struts that rise some 30+ feet above the reflection pool. The interlocking towers would be semi-transparent depicting the moniker that has been a fixture of the NY skyline.
The towers shall be placed upon a raised base of polished black absolute granite which also makes up the floor of the reflecting pool . The outside of the pools vertical base sides shall be designed of red flamed treated granite as well as the seating area. The pool shall also contain a feature of narrow vertical fountains to create a background of water sounds. Allother walking surfaces in the memorial shall be of concrete. The towers will be visible to passing cars on Merrick Ave.
We enter the memorial from the easterly side, even though it is accessible from either the east or west ends. The first feature we encounter to the right is a cast plaque briefly describing the events of the 9/11 story. The short narrative would conclude with a quotation of the events by President George W. Bush.
The next feature that is immediately noticeable is one of the two steel artifacts salvaged from the trade center affixed in the pavement surrounded by a starburst cobble configuration.
The reflecting pool with the polished aluminum structure is located at the center of the memorial in an irregularly shaped reflection pool to represent the lower geographic perimeter of Manhattan. This pool will be the pedestal for the twinned towers.
In front of the pool, and in a line directly to the water are the three flags of the memorial, The flag of the United States, The New York State flag and The flag of the County of Nassau. These flags are designed to be placed in the water in order to be visible and relate to all prominent features bordering the lake. To the west of the pool is a list of all the Nassau County resident victims of the 9/11 attacks.
There is the second piece of recovered steel that is displayed in a similar fashion between the pool and rescuers wall. It is anticipated that the project could be funded in part or completely by private donations
Ulysses S. Grant Statue In Lincoln Park Chicago
Located just west of Lakeshore Drive This massive stone memorial and statue of Ulysses S. Grant is a monumental tribute to this celebrated Civil War general and 18th President of the United States. This native of Galena Il. Was so revered that contributions for a memorial began coming in with days of his death in 1885. The bronze statue was designed by Louis T. Rebisso and dedicated in 1891. An estimated 200,000 people attended the opening ceremonies.
On the other side of the statue we see the south pond that leads to the entrance to the Lincoln Park zoo. Another one of the great free things the city of Chicago has to offer.
