⁴ᴷ Walking Tour of The New York Public Library Main Branch (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building)
I complete a walk through most of the publicly accessible areas of The New York Public Library Main Branch (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building) in Manhattan during a busy spring day in June 2018.
From Wikipedia:
The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library, originally called the Central Building and more widely known as the Main Branch or as the New York Public Library, is the flagship building in the New York Public Library system and a prominent historic landmark in Midtown Manhattan. The branch, opened in 1911, is one of four research libraries in the library system. It currently contains area of 646,680 square feet (60,079 m2) and four stories open to public. The main entrance steps are on Fifth Avenue opposite East 41st Street.
The Library's famous Rose Main Reading Room (Room 315) is a majestic 78 by 297 feet (24 by 91 m), with 52-foot (16 m)-high ceilings. The room is lined with thousands of reference works on open shelves along the floor level and along the balcony, lit by massive windows and grand chandeliers, and furnished with sturdy wood tables, comfortable chairs, and brass lamps. It is also equipped with computers providing access to library collections and the Internet as well as docking facilities for laptops. Readers study books brought to them from the library's closed stacks. There are special rooms named for notable authors and scholars, many of whom have done important research and writing at the Library. But the Library has always been about more than scholars; during the Great Depression, many members of the general public, out of work, used the Library to improve their lot in life, as they still do.
The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and designated a New York City Landmark in 1967. It was renamed in 2008 after businessman Stephen A. Schwarzman, who donated a large sum of money for the refurbishment of the building.

New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
New York City traces its roots to its 1624 founding as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a globally recognized symbol of the United States and its democracy.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known, and the city received a record 56 million tourists in 2014, hosting three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's heart[51] and its Crossroads, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, with multiple signature Chinatowns developing across the city. Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with 469 stations in operation. New York City's higher education network comprises over 120 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world.

Approximately 37% of the city's population is foreign born. In New York, no single country or region of origin dominates. The ten largest sources of foreign-born individuals in the city as of 2011 were the Dominican Republic, China, Mexico, Guyana, Jamaica, Ecuador, Haiti, India, Russia, and Trinidad and Tobago, while the Bangladeshi immigrant population has since become one of the fastest growing in the city, counting over 74,000 by 2013.

Philip Levine reads his poem They Feed They Lion | LIVE from the NYPL
Recorded on June 4th, 2013 at the New York Public Library

To coincide with The New York Public Library's exhibition “Back Tomorrow: Federico Garcia Lorca / Poet in New York,” this special installment of LIVE from the NYPL celebrates Lorca's life and legacy with performances and readings. Participants include John Giorno, Will Keen and Maria Fernandez Ache, Philip Levine, Christopher Maurer, Paul Muldoon, Patti Smith, and Tracy K. Smith.
Written while Federico García Lorca was a student at Columbia University in 1929-30, Poet in New York is arguably one of the poet’s most important works, and a powerful testament to New York City as seen through the eyes of one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. The book was published posthumously in 1940, but the manuscript mysteriously disappeared, lost to scholars for decades.
The Fundación Federico García Lorca in Madrid and The New York Public Library exhibit it now for the first time, together with drawings, photographs, letters, and mementos. Join LIVE for a celebration of this homecoming.
PHILIP LEVINE
Philip Levine is a large, ironic Whitman of the industrial heartland who, according to Edward Hirsch in the New York Times Book Review, should be considered one of [America's]...quintessentially urban poets. He was born in 1928 to Russian-Jewish immigrants, in Detroit, a city that inspired much of his writing. The author of twenty collections of poetry, including the most recent, News Of The World (Knopf, 2009), the 1995 Pulitzer Prize-winning The Simple Truth, and What Work Is, which won the National Book Award in 1991. Levine is known as the poet of the working class, and he remains dedicated to writing poetry for people for whom there is no poetry.” He was the eighteenth United States Poet Laureate for 2011-2012.

Albany Tulip Festival in the capital city of Albany, New York, USA,
The Tulip Festival is Albany’s signature spring event. Featuring annual traditions rooted in the city’s rich Dutch heritage, nearly one hundred artisans selling their handmade crafts, a fine arts show, delicious food, the KidZone family fun destination, two stages of world-class live entertainment and more than 140,000 tulips in 150 different varieties, the Tulip Festival is a sparkling showcase of local culture and business. It all takes place in historic Washington Park, the 81-acre “crown jewel” of the City.
Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd declared the tulip as Albany's official flower on July 1, 1948, there has been a Tulip Festival every year since.
On July 11, 1948 Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands selected the Orange Wonder, an 18-inch tall tulip that is orange-shaded with a scarlet toward the center as Albany's tulip.
The first Tulip Fest was celebrated the next year on May 14, 1949 with opening ceremonies still carried on today as tradition, such as the sweeping of State Street and the crowning of a Tulip Queen.
In 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the festival the state of New York designated Albany as the I Love New York Spring Destination
For the 50th anniversary a descendant variety of the Wonder Orange tulip was found in the Netherlands, and the new variety was named City of Albany

Oliver Stone and Tariq Ali: On History | 1-19-2012 | LIVE from the NYPL
LIVE from the NYPL | Recorded live at the New York Public Library, Celeste Bartos Forum, on January 19, 2012.
Pakistani writer and filmmaker TARIQ ALI and film director OLIVER STONE will continue their ongoing discourse about forgotten--or deliberately buried--episodes from American history from the US intervention against the Russian Revolution to the ongoing interference of the United States in Pakistani political affairs. In their recent public dialogue, On History, Oliver Stone asks, according to Jon Wiener, smart questions about the rise and fall of the United States and its empire in the 20th century. In this conversation, the tables are turned as we ask Tariq Ali to kick off with some questions for Oliver Stone, leading into a conversation between them on politics, film, and the untold history of the nation.

Van Cliburn in 7 Words*:
Hallelujah. Great Music. Wonderful Parents. Marvelous Friends.
* Great people in 7 Words:
Van Cliburn, one of the world's great pianists -- once dubbed The Texan Who Conquered Russia by Time magazine -- will reflect on the trajectory of his own career, from piano lessons with his mother, Rildia Bee, to performances at the White House for every President of the United States since Harry Truman.
Van Cliburn was propelled to fame in 1958 following his historic victory at the first international Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Embraced by the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war, this Texan became America's most persuasive cultural ambassador, creating chinks in the iron curtain long before glasnost and perestroika. His recording of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto was the first classical recording ever to sell a million copies and since has gone triple platinum, Van Cliburn remains to this day one of America's most beloved musicians.
In a wide-ranging conversation with Paul Holdengräber, Van Cliburn will also discuss his extensive collection of English furniture, Russian art, silver and jewels, to be auctioned off at Christie's on May 17.
An honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London, Van Cliburn is the recipient of more than twenty honorary doctorate degrees. He has performed for every President of the United States since Harry Truman and received Kennedy Center Honors, as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In a 2004 Kremlin ceremony Van Cliburn received the Order of Friendship from President Vladimir Putin. In 2003 President George W. Bush bestowed upon him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and President Barack Obama honored Van Cliburn with the National Medal of Arts at The White House in 2011.

5:47 5th Ave
7:38 Grand Central

Walking up 6th Avenue, down 5th, we will take a look at Madison, Park Avenue – a grand boulevard stroll with many urban highlights, like ice skating at Rockefeller Center, and the tall, huge office buildings of that complex. We're starting at Bryant Park and walking north, then south, then north again through the big Avenues of Manhattan.

Find someplace to eat, have a walk through Grand Central and admire the modern architecture of Midtown, and be amazed by some huge public artworks.
Midtown has a tremendous density of places, people, attractions and landmarks which await your discovery and the best way to experience it of course is on foot. You'll never run out of interesting sites. And while you're strolling along, enamored by the famous avenues, don't just walk past the side streets. They have got some fascinating things to check out such as West 46th Street, packed with restaurants, bars and stores. You'll get souvenirs cheaper than at Times Square.
Fifth Avenue's commercial heartland is one of the world's great urban vistas, always packed with pedestrians and lined with exclusive department stores and boutiques, too numerous to fully mention.
Continuing back down Fifth we turn on 42nd Street, to reach Grand Central Terminal, one of the great railway stations of the world and perhaps New York's most famous interior space.
We are plunging into a very worthwhile twenty blocks which can be nicely enjoyed along Madison Avenue with serious window-shopping, people watching and looking up at the buildings peaks. The shops and sights along the way will keep you thoroughly entertained.
You've heard about the New York minute? It's like a split second in which a lot of things get done. New York is quick. In fact, when you're walking, be sure not to take up the entire sidewalk because you're going to be blocking some speeding New Yorker coming up behind you.
We reach the Upper Eastside, with that rarefied atmosphere of the blueblood territory. The multimillion mansions and the nice side streets. Be sure to have a look as you walk along Madison and the other avenues down the side streets and see where the superrich live.
Lexington is one of the most interesting of New York avenues. It still retains a lot of its earlier character and quality, not quite so yuppiefied and gentrified as the other avenues that we been walking on, all of what you been lovely, but Lexington is especially nitty-gritty and a fine place to end our walking tour of New York's grand avenues.

On the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Ira Glass speaks with longtime This American Life producer Nancy Updike and her husband Dan Ephron, former Jerusalem bureau chief for Newsweek. Both have covered Israel for years; Ephron was at the rally where Rabin was killed and has written a new book about the murder called Killing a King: The Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and the Remaking of Israel, while Updike is creating an episode about the assassination. Incorporating historical footage from the time of the murder and audio from Updike’s program, Glass will lead a discussion about why the assassination still spawns conspiracy theories, public shouting matches, and fierce political divisions.
NANCY UPDIKE is one of the founding producers of This American Life. She has reported from Iraq, Egypt, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and the United States. Her Iraq reporting won a Scripps Howard National Journalism Award and a Murrow Award. She was executive producer of This American Life’s second television season, which won the Emmy for Outstanding Nonfiction Series.
An award-winning writer, DAN EPHRON has served as the Jerusalem bureau chief for Newsweek and The Daily Beast and now lives in New York City.
IRA GLASS is the host and creator of the public radio show This American Life. The show is heard each week on over 500 public radio stations by 2.2 million people, plus the CBC in Canada and the ABC in Australia. Most weeks the podcast of the program is the most popular podcast on iTunes, with another 1.6 million downloading.
