Iowa DNR Praises Cedar Lake Group
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Inside the Czech and Slovak Museum, city leaders and residents are talking over the latest EnvisionCR guidelines that the city hopes to adopt early next year. They would lay out what the city would consider when developing land and some people are saying the Cedar Lake and other key spots around town have to be included to have a plan that matters.
In Cedar Rapids, its all about seeing whats not quite there yet.
Can you envision a trail across the lake, Friends of Cedar Lakes Dale Todd asked a passerby.
Monday night, the city showed off the most recent plans for the years of future development all over the city.
I think it's important to have that shared vision because it really does number one, get people excited about the future, said Cedar Rapids Planning Services Director Jennifer Pratt.
Turning open fields into blank canvases.
Dale Todds canvas is the Cedar Lake.
For a lot of people this is their first and only impression of Cedar Rapids and we think we can do better, said Todd.
The Iowa DNR backs him up.
The agencys Director recently told the city that the lake is on its way to qualifying for state funds to fix it up, potentially making it a place where people could swim.
But like so much else in Cedar Rapids, it partially comes down to flood protection.
The DNR doesn't want to spend a lot of money down here and then all of a sudden have a flood event and have a lot of sedimentation come back in from the river, said Todd.
Thats why Mayor Ron Corbett says the time to figure out flood protection for that part of downtown is now.
Because once we build it, it'll have to last for 75 to 100 years, said Corbett.
An early draft of the work done Monday will show up in the next few weeks. A final draft goes to the City council, for its January 27th meeting.

Christmas In The Corridor Amana
AMANA COLONIES, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - In a community where luminaries light the paths, candles glow in every window and Christmas lights twinkle along the streets, there is a cozy familiarity on a drive through the Amanas during the holiday season. For more than 30 years this has been a traditional stop for families in Eastern Iowa and now it boasts an even bigger attraction for all to celebrate. The Tannenbaum Forest is a treat for anyone searching to find the spirit of the season. Scores of incredibly decorated trees fill the old dairy barn just off the main drag and Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director David Rettig says crowds who gather to take in the glitter cant hide their wide-eyed excitement, Many of them walk that first step in the door and they just stop because theyre mesmerized by everything. Tall Christmas trees fill the building to the rafters. Theyre covered in elves, blinking lights, huge ornaments, big bows, gingerbread houses and massive lighted star toppers that make visitors stop and stare. Local groups and businesses planned all year for this event and Rettig says unique doesnt even begin to describe what they've created, People love it, its a tradition for a lot of people. We have folks that come every year for the last 25 years or so and they come from Chicago and they come from Kansas City and a lot of locals also. Amid the maze of memories, Santa is here to take pictures and patiently listen to those important wish lists from excited youngsters. The owner of the famed Ox Yoke Inn restaurant, Bill Leichsenring, says Tannenbaum Forest is just another wonderful addition that gives Christmas in the Colonies a very special feel, To me Christmas is always a quiet time and a time where family is the main ingredient. People who come to visit dont see anything like this anywhere, even in a major city like Chicago. You know, they have to drive the four and a half hours to come to Amana and see the wonderful work the people have done. Leichsenring says the trees, the ornaments and the creative talent are all from right here. Proceeds from this years Tannenbaum Forest go to the University of Iowa Childrens Hospital. You are invited for the final three days, coming up this weekend. Rettig says all he can promise is fun, family and the holidays as they were meant to be celebrated, Its a great opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of the malls and the shopping and relax and experience Christmas maybe the way it used to be or certainly more like it was here in Amana. RAYGUN Coming to Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - This morning, NewBo Station next door to NewBo City Market announced its first tenant that will open next year. Famous for clever Iowa slogans and sassy sayings, RAYGUN will expand here to Cedar Rapids. Owner Mike Draper said he's always loved Cedar Rapids, but the flood of 2008 halted his original plans to build a store in this city. I first toured NewBo even before the city market was in, which was about five years ago, Draper said. We've had our eye on this neighborhood ever since. The NewBo District is now quickly growing. Draper said RAYGUN will take over 4,500 square feet of space and will also be two stories. Craig Byers, one of the owners of NewBo Station, said bringing an Iowa-based store to the area is just what it needs to thrive. The neighborhood has plenty of places to go for food and drink, Byers said. They're really focusing on retail aspect. Draper said he's already had some fun ideas for Cedar Rapids shirts. We have a bunch of them we just haven't released yet, but we've been slowly compiling them for a while now, Draper said. But he did release one thing special to the city. I mean, crunchberries will definitely enter into it, he said. Draper said he plans for RAYGUN to open in March 2016. The NewBo Station also has apartments and office space up for rent, which will be available by February 2016.

ROAD TRIPPIN: Newbo's Revivial
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Before answering the question, Steve Shriver pauses and takes a good long look around the neighborhood and then with a grimace on his face says, That first time, it felt like a war zone. The New Bohemia Group President is remembering his first trip back to the Czech neighborhood when the flood waters of 2008 finally receded enough to walk down the street. He says it was tough to focus on anything that offered hope, There were no businesses, no people, it felt like .. it was uninhabitable. Today, with the City Market as its centerpiece, the NewBo Neighborhood is roaring back. Restaurants, bars, nightlife, galleries, art studios, coffee shops, fine clothing, salons, book shops, skate boards, and all with the feeling of a neighborhood where you can take a walk or stop and chat with the guy playing an old piano that sits in front of Parlor City. In the last few years NewBo has become the place to be and be seen. To the point, Shriver says, people dont just want to play here, they want to work and live here too.
