I LOVE WHERE I LIVE
This video is to show my love for where I live in Newport County, Rhode Island, on Aquidneck Island -- once land of Native Americans, now a land of immigrants, ancestors of immigrants and Native Americans. Most of the video clips and photographs were shot in Newport, Rhode Island with the others being shot in the adjacent town of Middletown, save one in Portsmouth. I live in the town of Portsmouth, but claim Aquidneck Island as my home. Aquidneck Island includes three small towns: Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island (/ˌroʊd ˈaɪlɨnd/ or /rɵˈdaɪlɨnd/), officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is a state in the New England region of the United States. Rhode Island is the smallest in area, the eighth least populous, but the second most densely populated of the 50 US states behind New Jersey. Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east, and it shares a water boundary with New York's Long Island to the southwest. It also has the longest official name of all the states.
Rhode Island was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from British rule, declaring itself independent on May 4, 1776, two months before any other colony. The State was also the last of the thirteen original colonies to ratify the United States Constitution.

Ives Bluff - Warwick, RI
For more information, visit
Below the wooded heights, waves lap at the shoreline. Herons strut among the shaking reeds. The new leaves on the oak, trees which command the heights, shake as well.
This is Ives Bluff at spring. A warm breeze comes off the shining waters of the cove. The breeze carries a whiff of salt, a taste of the new season.
Cars cruise along the nearby road, heading toward verdant Goddard State Park, which lies just beyond the bend. The park has a beach of golden sand, winding woodland trails, hundreds of acres of lawn.
Soon, from the rolling plain of Ives Bluff, we will begin to spot boats on the cove, twenty-something footers from the Greenwich Bay marinas.
Golfers flock to Potowomut Country Club, a mere mile away, for a leisurely eighteen holes. In downtown East Greenwich, the local establishments of eat and drink—noisy pubs with names like Fat Bellys, and swankier joints by the waterfront, just five-minutes away—are all full. Conversation pours into the streets.
But for now, these cafés, with their couches and fireplaces and familiar faces, are welcome nooks in the winter. Residents of Ives Bluff emerge sometimes to sled or ski—nearby Interstate 95 makes the mountains of northern New England a hop and a skip. But mainly folks turn inward; to enjoy the peaceful glow of the hearth and wait for the cold to pass, cup of tea in hand.
And pass it does. The snow melts, the ice recedes, the mercury rises—slowly but steadily. The birds return, their northerly vs filling the sky. They have returned, and with them the sun.
To make your home in one of Ives Bluffs eight custom crafted masterpieces is to choose a lifestyle defined by the timeless rhythms of New Englands land, water, and culture.

Prescott Farm offers a glimpse of early rural New England through its buildings and landscape. The Farm traces its origin to the early 18th century when the Nichols-Overing House (c. 1730) was central to the site. Doris Duke, through the Newport Restoration Foundation, purchased the 40--acre farm with the idea of preserving open space and the Nichols--Overing House, as well as creating a setting for additional historic buildings that were rescued from imminent demolition.
The Robert Sherman Windmill (1812): This impressive smock--style, four--vaned windmill was built in 1812 and used in Warren, RI in connection with a distillery. It has an unusual feature—two sets of grinding stones whose doubled capacity could be lucrative for its owner. Not surprisingly then, it was moved two more times to Portsmouth, Rhode Island by millers who acquired it, first by Robert Sherman to Quaker Hill (East Main Road), then to Lehigh Hill (West Main Road). It became idle in the early 20th century and remained so, in ever deteriorating condition, until the NRF acquired it in 1969 and moved it to Prescott Farm. The mill was restored by the NRF in 1971, with additional work done in the 1980s and a new shaft installed in 1998. NRF Windmill Video:
Over the winter, artist Nora Rabins has been preparing colorful graphic sails for the windmill. In the fashion of sewing circles and quilting bees, members of the community were invited to be a part of the process. The large-scale design, derived the millstone's carved pattern, will be visible from afar and even more meaningful up-close. The windmill was run for the first time in many years on Sunday, May 19, 2013. (The artist's project is funded in part by the RI State Council on the Arts.) Visit for information and updates.
