Hanoi, Huan Kiem Lake Ngoc Son Temple, Vietnam 28 12 2017
Ho Hoan Kiem (Hoan Kiem Lake) is number 1 attraction in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The Lake is located in the center of the city in Old Quarter and is the most visited place in Hanoi by locals as well as tourist because of its manifold charms and attractions.
‘Ho Huan Kiem’ means ‘Lake of the Returned Sword’ which allures to an interesting local myth. According to the legend, Emperor Le Loi (1384-1433) of Vietnam was given a sword by the Dragon King who lived in the Lake, to help him liberate his land from Chinese yoke by revolting against Ming Dynasty of China. After the country stood liberated, one day in 1428, when the Emperor was boating in the lake, a Golden Turtle, Kim Qui appeared and asked him to return the sword of Dragon King. He returned the sword with thanks and hence the name of the lake. A Turtle Tower (Thap Rua) is standing in the Lake to remind the legend. It water is green, so it was also called Luc Thuy Lake (Green Water Lake). Its area is about 30 acres. There is a small island in the lake which is called Jade Island on which the Temple of the Jade Mountain (Chua Ngoc Son) was built in 18th century. The Island is a beautiful religious as well as cultural place and is connected to the city by a red-colored iconic wooden bridge called Cau The Huc (Huc Bridge). The Lake and surrounding area has great value for the people of Hanoi who gather around the lake and its adjacent parks to enjoy leisure time in enchanting atmosphere. The lake is magnificent scenic spot and gathering point in the city.

The Buddha lived and taught in the northeastern Indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.[1] He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (or dukkha), achieve nirvana, and escape what is seen as a cycle of suffering and rebirth.

Đền Ngọc Sơn - Temple of Jade Mountain /Ngoc Son Temple | Hanoi Vietnam
❤️ Temple of Jade Mountain /Ngoc Son Temple is a pagoda sitting in the center on a small island, surrounding by the Hoan Kiem lake in Hanoi.
❤️ The temple attracts many visitors and was built in commemoration of the 13th century military leader Tran Hung Dao who was renowned for his bravery in the battle against the Yuan Dynasty.
❤️The island on which the temple is built is known as Jade Island and is accessible by the iconic Huc Bridge or Rising Sun Bridge which is a charming scarlet-painted wooden bridge of classical Vietnamese design. The pagoda is also guarded by two towering posts decorated with Chinese writing. The lake and temple are probably the most famous places in Hanoi city in which to rest and enjoy the view and are a great place to sit back and watch the locals.
❤️ Also inside the pagoda are a large bronze bust and other deities. There are altars dedicated to Tran Hung Dao, some ancient artefacts including ceramics and a preserved specimen of a giant turtle found in the lake weighing 250kg.

Hoan Kiem Lake Temple, Đền Ngọc Sơn, Hanoi Vietnam 2017 Ha Noi Viet Nam
The Temple of the Jade Mountain (Vietnamese: Đền Ngọc Sơn) is located on Hoàn Kiếm Lake in central Hanoi, Vietnam. It is open from 8:00 to 17:00.
Being built on the Jade Islet and dedicated to Confucian and Taoist philosophers and the national hero, Trần Hưng Đạo, the small temple was expanded in 1865.
From the shore, the Welcoming Morning Sunlight Bridge (Cầu Thê Húc) leads to the island. Buildings of the temple include the Pen Tower (Thap But), the ink-slab (Dai Nghien), the Moon Contemplation Pavilion (Dac Nguyet) and the Pavilion against Waves (Đình Trấn Ba), all of which have symbolic meaning.
The temple is a popular spot for visitors to Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi.
Hoan Kiem Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, meaning Lake of the Returned Sword or Lake of the Restored Sword), also known as Hồ Gươm (Sword Lake), is a lake in the historical center of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city and serves as a focal point for its public life.
According to the legend, in early 1428, Emperor Lê Lợi was boating on the lake when a Golden Turtle God (Kim Qui) surfaced and asked for his magic sword, Heaven's Will. Lợi concluded that Kim Qui had come to reclaim the sword that its master, a local God, the Dragon King (Long Vương) had given Lợi some time earlier, during his revolt against Ming China. Later, Lợi gave the sword back to the turtle after he finished fighting off the Chinese. Lợi renamed the lake to commemorate this event, from its former name Luc Thuy meaning Green Water. The Turtle Tower (Thap Rùa) standing on a small island near the centre of lake is linked to the legend. The first name of Hoàn Kiếm lake is Tả Vọng, when the King haven't gave the Magical Sword back to the Golden Turtle God.
The Huc Bridge
Large soft-shell turtles, either of the species Rafetus swinhoei or a separate species named Rafetus leloi in honor of the emperor, had been sighted in the lake for many years. The last known individual was found dead on January 19, 2016. There are three remaining turtles of the species R. swinhoei.
Near the northern shore of the lake lies Jade Island on which the Temple of the Jade Mountain (Ngoc Son Temple) stands. The temple was erected in the 18th century. It honors the 13th-century military leader Tran Hung Dao who distinguished himself in the fight against the Yuan Dynasty, Van Xuong, a scholar, and Nguyen Van Sieu, a Confucian master and famous writer in charge of repairs made to the temple in 1864. Jade Island is connected to the shore by the wooden red-painted The Huc Bridge (The Huc, meaning Morning Sunlight Bridge).

Ngoc Son Temple in Hanoi -VIETNAM-
Hanoi's most visited temple sits pretty on a delightful little island in the northern part of Hoan Kiem Lake. An elegant scarlet bridge, Huc (Rising Sun) Bridge, constructed in classical Vietnamese style and lined with flags, connects the island to the lake shore. The nearby Martyrs’ Monument was erected as a memorial to those who died fighting for Vietnam’s independence.
Surrounded by water and shaded by trees, the small temple is dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao (who defeated the Mongols in the 13th century), La To (patron saint of physicians) and the scholar Van Xuong. Inside you’ll find some fine ceramics, a gong or two, some ancient bells and a glass case containing a stuffed lake turtle, which is said to have weighed a hefty 250kg.
