Football: Air Force 44, Nicholls 16 (Highlights)
Things looked promising in the early going for the Nicholls State University football team in its season opener at Air Force as the teams were tied in the second quarter, but the Falcons' rushing attack proved to be too much, leading to 35 consecutive points as the Colonels fell 44-16 on Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium.
Women's Tennis to Face Nicholls State In a Neutral Site Match Friday
SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team faces the Nicholls State University Colonels on Friday in a neutral site match at the Mabry Tennis Center, located on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word.
Last Time Out
The Broncs fell 2-5 to the University of Texas-El Paso Miners at the El Paso Tennis Club on March 22.
The Broncs (7-9) recorded a win in doubles as the team of Katia Stavroulaki and Reegan Greenwood defeated Davina Meza and Jeannez Daniel 8-6 on court one but the Miners (9-3) went on to clinch the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
The Broncs got a pair of victories as Mariana Ranzahuer recorded a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Daphne Visscher at No. 5 singles and Natacha Minc posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Matilda Tench at No. 6 singles.
The Miners went on to win the rest of the matches to clinch the match.
Scouting the Colonels
The Colonels are 11-3 entering Friday’s match with the Broncs. They had their eight-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday after falling to the No. 41 LSU Tigers 1-5.
Stephanie Barnett leads the Colonels with a 10-2 record in the dual match season. Barnett has played mainly at No. 1 singles while posting a 9-2 record. Her other win came at No. 2 singles.
Marie Aubert (8-3), Isla Brock (8-1) and Kateryna Nakonechna each have posted eight wins this season.
In doubles, Brock and Nakonechna lead the Colonels with a 8-1 record while playing at all three positions. They have a 1-0 record at No. 1, a 4-1 record at No. 2 and a 3-0 record at No. 3 doubles.
The Series
The Broncs are 3-6 all-time against the Colonels in series that dates back to 1999. These two teams faced each other last season as the Colonels came away with the 4-1 win on March 12 in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
The last time the Broncs defeated the Colonels came on February 24, 2007 when they won 4-3 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, which was also the last time the Broncs faced them at home.

The Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on April 3 when they continue conference play against New Mexico State in a neutral site match in Phoenix, Arizona.
Men's Tennis Ready to Face Nicholls State on Friday
BEAUMONT -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team faces off against the Nicholls State University Colonels in neutral match on Friday at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Broncs (3-9) snapped their seven-match losing streak with a 4-0 win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on March 1.
The Broncs jumped out to the early lead with a pair of doubles victories. Mauricio Fosado and Juan Cruz Soria defeated the Kangaroos' (3-9) team of Andrey Smirnov and Daniel De Zamacona 8-4 at doubles No. 3. Alejandro Sanoja and Sebastien Job then clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Vinh Pham and Conner Edwards at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Job kept the momentum going for the Broncs with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Smirnov at No. 3 singles. Sanoja followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Edwards at No. 6 singles and then Soria clinched the match for the Broncs as he beat Mike Psarros 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
The rest of the singles matches went unfinished once the match was clinched.
Scouting the Colonels
The Colonels are 7-6 on the season and are coming off of a 4-0 loss to Southern Methodist University.
Nico Mertens leads the Colonels with a 9-2 record in singles competition while playing primarily at No. 2 singles. He has also teamed up with Partha Adavelly for a 7-4 doubles record while playing primarily at No. 1 doubles.
Sam Meessen and Lukas Clemens each have six wins in singles competitions while Clemens has teamed up with Bernard Wezeman for a 6-6 doubles record.
Meessen has teamed with Evan Karatzas for a 4-2 doubles record while picking up three of their wins at No. 3 doubles.
The Series
The Broncs are 6-4 against the Colonels all-time in a series that dates back to 2005. These two teams faced each other last season with the Colonels picking up the 6-1 win over the Broncs on Feb. 5, 2013 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The Broncs last beat Colonels on March 13, 2012 when they won 4-3 in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.

Mt. Carmel: In 1855, Father Charles M. Menard, purchased land and built a school for girls on this site. The sisters of Mt. Carmel bought the property and building, operating the school from 1855 until the Thibodaux Central Catholic High School opened in 1965. The Carmel Inn & Suites was opened in 1973 on the same original site as the school. The hotel was originally operated as a Holiday Inn in 1973, then under the Ramada Inn flag and now as the Carmel Inn & Suites. This Week in Nicholls Athletics 11-12-11
THIBODAUX -- The Nicholls Athletics department is pleased to announce the debut of This Week in Nicholls Athletics, presented by State Farm Insurance, a 30-minute magazine show highlighting the best of Colonels sports.
The program is slated to air on Cox Sports Television each Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and full episodes will also be available on the Nicholls YouTube site after the initial broadcast. CST is the regional sports network home of the New Orleans Saints and Hornets and delivers exclusive programming from the professional and collegiate sporting ranks. The network is available in over 1.5 million homes, spanning eight states.
The premiere edition of This Week in Nicholls Athletics, presented by State Farm Insurance, takes a look at the upcoming men's basketball season and highlights the story of Keith Uperesa, Nicholls Associate Head Football Coach.

Men's Golf Set to Tee It Up at Atchafalaya Intercollegiate
PATTERSON, Louisiana – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men’s golf team competes at the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate, hosted by Nicholls State University on Monday and Tuesday at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild Golf Course.
The tournament will be a 54-hole event that will feature 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Competition begins with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m.
The course plays 7,398 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
Along with Nicholls State and UTPA, other schools competing at the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate include: South Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, New Orleans, Incarnate Word, North Dakota and Texas Southern.
Last Time Out
Freshman Nicolas Platret finished in a tie for first place with a three-round score of 225 to lead the Broncs at the Bronc at Los Lagos Golf Club.
Platret turned in a final round score of 77. Platret went to a playoff with Abilene Christian’s Corbin Renner. On hole No. 1, both players birdied the par five. Renner then two-putted for par on hole No. 2 while Platret missed his par putt slightly to the right to give Renner the championship.
Sophomore Gareth Saxon, who was playing as an individual, finished in third place after posting a final round 75 for a three-round score of 227 (76,76,75). Senior Chris Felix, also playing as an individual, finished in a tie for sixth after shooting a final round 76 as he posted a three-round score of 231 (75,80,76).
Junior Ramon Ventura-Camp finished in 13th place with a three-round score of 239 (77,84,78) after shooting a final round 78. Junior and Sharyland alum finished tied for 14th after shooting a final round 80 for a three-round score of 240 (75,85,80). Junior and McAllen High alum Ricky Solis finished in a tie for 20th after shooting a final round 84 for a three-round score of 246 (77,85,84) and freshman Mariano Romero finished in 26th with a three-round score of 254 (86,82,86) after shooting a final round 86.
As a team, the Broncs finished in fourth place with a three-round score of 947 (302,326,319) after shooting a final round 319. Abilene Christian won the team championship with a three-round score of 919.

The Broncs have nine student-athletes representing six countries, which include England, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain and the United States. Two student-athletes call the Rio Grande Valley home in Sharyland High School alum Peter Fox and McAllen High School alum Ricky Solis.

Paula Van Goes -- Alto Saxophone; R. Timothy McReynolds -- Piano
Paula Van Goes is a freelance musician in Nashville, Tennessee and currently teaches saxophone and other classes at Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University. She is an award-winning performer and clinician who has toured and lectured throughout Bolivia, Brazil, Ukraine and the United States on saxophone as well as flute and clarinet. Through her research, Dr. Van Goes has become an advocate for Brazilian concert saxophone music. Her dissertation, Brazilian Music for Saxophone: A Survey of Solo and Small Chamber Works, brought her into contact with many of Brazil's leading classical composers and their students, and has led to several trips to South America, where she has performed, taught, and collected new compositions. Paula holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland, a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Past academic appointments include Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland, and Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Dr. Van Goes' teachers include Dale Underwood, Timothy Timmons, and Robert Fought.
