Nikko
The Japanese saying Never say 'kekko' until you've seen Nikko, kekko meaning beautiful, magnificent or I am satisfied is a reflection of the beauty and sites in Nikkō
Nikkō (日光市 Nikkō-shi?, literally sunlight or sunshine) is a city in the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Approximately 140 km north of Tokyo and 35 km west of Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, it is a popular destination for Japanese and international tourists. Attractions include the mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (Nikkō Tōshō-gū) and that of his grandson Iemitsu (Iemitsu-byō Taiyū-in), and the Futarasan Shrine, which dates to the year 767. There are also many famous hot springs (onsen) in the area. Elevations range from 200 to 2,000 m. The mountains west of the main city are part of Nikkō National Park and contain some of the country's most spectacular waterfalls and scenic trails.
As of March 1, 2012, the city has an estimated population of 90,071, with 36,134 households.Historical sites and attractions

Nikko 4K - Cinematic Day Trip from Tokyo
This video is about the great day we spent in Nikko, on a day trip from Tokyo, Japan.
Our day started early in the morning, about 6.30 am. We took the Metro to Tokyo Station and from there with the JR Pass we took the train to Utsunomiya (50 min). There we took the JR local Nikko train line to Nikko. The film starts at this point, on the local train, which was also about 50 min.
Once we arrived at Nikko, we walked up until the Nikko Shinkyo Bridge (red bridge). From there, we spent the whole day visiting the temples and its great river. A journey we will never forget.

Kanmangafuchi Abyss 憾満ヶ淵 [Nikko Japan Travel Vlog Blog]
A walk along Kanmangafuchi Abyss in Nikko, Japan. Video and photos of the mystic gorge.
Nikko can be reached for a day trip from Tokyo and is quiet popular. But too see all the attractions of the area one should plan at least 2 days for the destination.
From Japan Guide:
Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) was formed by an eruption of nearby Mount Nantai. This gorge near central Nikko is only a few hundred meters long and can be enjoyed from a pleasant riverside walking trail.
Kanmangafuchi is also known for its row of about 70 stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased. This particular group of Jizo statues is alternately called Bake Jizo (Ghost Jizo), Narabi Jizo (Jizo in a line) or Hyaku Jizo (100 Jizo). The statues look out over the river and across to the Nikko Botanical Garden, but the botanical garden cannot be entered from the abyss.

Kanaman-ga-fuchi’s collection of Jizo statues is one of the most iconic locations in Nikko’s spiritual world. The statues have a significant importance for the locals as well as for the visitors making a pilgrimage to Nikko. It is believed that the figures of Jizo bring solace to people suffering from the loss of a child. It is said that Jizo helps to sneak children into the afterlife in the sleeves of his robe, assisting those babies that did not have the chance to build up good karma on earth prior to their passing. This is why you’ll see the statues often dressed in crocheted clothing made by those grieving the loss of a loved one. Parents hope that if they care for the figures of Jizo, he will do the same for their dead children. It is also said, that Jizo is the Bodhisattva who also cares for travellers and lost souls.
Jizo belong to Japan’s most beloved deities.

Exploring Nikko in 24 hours
Nikkō covers a large area (1,449.83 km²) of rural northwestern Tochigi approximately 140 km north of Tokyo and 35 km west of Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi Prefecture. It is the third-largest city (by area) in Japan, Nikko is located in Tochigi Prefecture in the Kanto region of Japan’s main island. Filled with breathtaking nature and historical shrines and temples, you wouldn’t want to give this awesome UNESCO World Heritage Site a missbehind Takayama and Hamamatsu.
Both the Watarase River and the Kinugawa River pass through the city. Lake Chūzenji and the Kegon Falls lie in Nikkō, as does the Nikko Botanical Garden. The city's many mountains and waterfalls have made it an important source of hydroelectric power. The area has also been used for mining copper, aluminum, and concrete.
The weather in Nikkō is fairly similar to that of the northern island of Hokkaidō, even though Nikkō is much closer to Tokyo than Hokkaidō. The elevation of Nikkō plays an important role in this fact. It will usually get cooler as one ascends the mountain. The average temperature of Nikkō is around 7 °C with the warmest months reaching only about 22 °C and the coldest reaching down to about -8 °C
