Yusmarg- Kashmir

Yusmarg is 47 km from Srinagar. Yusmarg means 'The Meadow of Jesus'. It is believed that Jesus came to Kashmir and stayed at Yusmarg for sometime. It is situated at the bank of Doodganga river. Charari sharif is 13 km from Yusmarg.

Yusmarg or Yousmarg is a hill station in the western part of Kashmir Valley.It is situated 47 km south of Srinagar the capital of the state.
Yusmarg is an alpine valley covered with snow clad mountains and the meadows of Pine and Fir, It lies 13 km south of Charari Sharief a town of Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated at the bank of Doodganga River which is a tributary of Jehlum River. It is located in the Pir Panjal peaks, a sub range of Himalayas. The Peaks are: the Sunset Peak and the Tatakooti Peak for which the expeditions lead from this hill station. It lies at an altitude of 2396 metres above sea level.
A trek of 4 km leads to a small lake called Nilnag. Another trail leads to the lakes in Sang-e-Safed valley, mostly covered by ice even during the summer. Other tourist activities include horse riding, fishing, skiing during winter and photography

When we mention Kashmir, the first thing we visualise is the beautiful shikaras in Dal Lake, the hauntingly pretty Mughal Gardens, the cascading Aharbal waterfall, the stunning Sonmarg and magical Betaab Valley. True, Kashmir being one absolute jannat or heaven on the Earth is brimming with natural splendour in every corner but you still have more places in the state, which are unheard and unexplored. One among them is the gorgeous Yousmarg, a pretty little hill station in Badgam district of Kashmir.

Surrounded with serene Himalayan ranges and meadows of pine and fir, it is one of those destinations people dream about. It is difficult not to fall in love with Yousmarg, which is located at just 50 km from Srinagar.

Legend behind the name :

There’s a fascinating tale behind the meaning of the name of the place. As per a popular native belief, Jesus once visited Kashmir and Yousmarg is the place, where he stayed for some time, that’s why the region was named Yousmarg, which in Kashmiri language refers to The Meadow of Jesus.

Set at an altitude of 7861 ft feet above sea level, Yousmarg is one offbeat destination, which must be in every travellers’ list. The place is renowned for some of the highest peaks in the Pir Panjal Mountain Range, such as the Sunset Peak (4746 m) and Tattakutti (4725 m). The most prominent attractions of the region include Doodh Ganga, Pakharpora Shrine, Nilnag lake, Sang-e-Safed, Tosa Maidan and Charari Sharief. So if you are looking for a less crowded and pollution free zone this summer, Yousmarg is the place where you need to be.

TOSAMAIDAN PASTURE (KASHMIR)
Tosa Maidan is not only famous as a pasture but also for its historical background. Bounded by dense forests, it is situated about 10 kms from Khag in the mountains of the Himalayan range. After crossing the upper mountain reaches of Drang, Zakhora and other small villages, one reaches the pasture of Tosa Maidan. It is said that Tosa Maidan is one of those pastures which the shepherds of other neighbouring countries also used to visit in ancient times. The Mughals used to go to Poonch using this route. It is said that they had constructed a seven-storeyed building – Dam-Dam - here.

The Basmai Gali(13,000 ft) is the pass which leads into Tosa Maidan. Another pass - Poonch Gali - on its right side leads to the valley of Poonch. This pass was deemed to be the safest, easiest, and nearest to reach Punjab in ancient times. From here, a path also leads to Nilnag. Tosa Maidan is the largest pasture in its surrounding areas, 3 miles in length and 1.5 miles in width. Sky-touching deodars fence this pasture presenting a view of a green carpet in summer. During the summer, the camps of the Gujjar community and shepherds with theirgrazing sheep in the pastures present a riveting picture. Also, the fragrance of wild flowers refreshes the whole environment.
