Wang Shu's Ningbo History Museum built from the remains of demolished villages
In this exclusive Dezeen movie, Chinese architect Wang Shu of Amateur Architecture Studio explains why he recycled material from traditional Chinese buildings to construct the Ningbo History Museum.
Completed in 2008, the Ningbo History Museum is a 30,000-square-metre building located in the city of Ningbo in Zhejiang province, China.
The three-storey museum's distinctive facade is largely composed of debris collected from the surrounding area, where traditional Chinese towns and villages were demolished to make way for new developments.
Originally in this area there were about thirty beautiful villages and they demolished every village, Wang says in the movie, which Dezeen filmed at the Royal Academy in London. Everywhere you go, you find ruins of buildings that have been demolished.
But everywhere there are materials, beautiful materials, he continued. So I wanted to build this museum for the people who were originally living here so they can keep some memories.

Wang Shu: A Museum from a Painting
Pritzker Prize–winning architect Wang Shu of Amateur Architecture Studio presents a talk about the firm’s work and its sources of inspiration, including Chinese landscape painting and traditional buildings. Amateur Architecture Studio is at the forefront of contemporary Chinese architecture and the practice is rooted in the culture and natural resources of the communities where it works. This approach is reflected in projects such as the Ningbo History Museum, the campus of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and, most recently, the Fuyang Cultural Complex.
Wang Shu and his wife, Lu Wenyu, established Amateur Architecture Studio in Hangzhou, China, in 1997. Wang received the Gold Medal of Architecture from the Académie d’Architecture of France in 2011 and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2012 for the firm’s work.

Kid DESTROYS $15000 LEGO Sculpture
A life-size lego statue of Disney's Nick Wilde character from the recent Zootopia hit was inadvertently smashed by a kid within juar houea of the opening of a LEGO Expo in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.
The statue is said to have costed or be worth over $15,000 USD ($100,000 RMB) and took the artist, Mr. Zhao 3 nights to complete. The parents were very apologetic but netizens weren't so kind - calling for the parents to pay for the exhibit.
The artist did not want the parents to compensate for the destruction because he knew the kid did not mean to do so.
Still, this was the second time in recent weeks that parents in China allowed their children to destroy a work of art. People were angry earlier about 2 women video taping their children destroying a modern art installation in Shanghai.

It’s clear to see how Duanwu Jie, China’s summer solstice holiday, got its English-language name—the Dragon Boat Festival. Around the fifth day of the fifth month on the traditional Chinese calendar, people gather to race boats adorned with brightly-painted carvings of dragons. Designs and types of contest vary widely. Some races are intense athletic challenges, while other events are more of a community get-together. Stories link the festival with the poet Qu Yuan, born in the late fourth century B.C. Said to be an able minister of the Chu state who was banished from the court, Qu Yuan despaired at his rivals’ corruption, and at last drowned himself in a river. By legend, an ensuing search for Qu by boat inspired the day’s races.
