RVing to Alaska | Hanging out, fishing, and exploring the woods
Hanging out in the woods in Alaska, fishing, and exploring..
We got to Faribanks, almost too fast! We had an event toward the end of June we had reservations for, and wanted to attend, but moved too quickly! So we had time to kill. We didn't want to venture too far, and have to back track a lot, so we found some remote places close to town, and explored what we could.
Thanks for visiting our channel, we're the Boudreaux's! We are an adventurous family of 7 who decided to sell our house and quit our jobs to tour this great country. We are an eclectic mix of chaos and fun. Dad, mom, big sister, and blended bunch of boys traveling, learning and enjoying life. Our plan is to visit and paddle board in all 50 states! Homer, Alaska
Homer is a small but vibrant community towards the southwest end of the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. Heading south from Anchorage for 350 km. on Route 1 (the Seward and Stirling Highways), the final approach to Homer suddenly offers a spectacular vista of Katchemak Bay backed by a panorama of blue mountains and icy-blue glaciers.
The main residential and commercial area of Homer clusters inland from Katchemak Bay, but the Homer Spit, a low-lying 7 km. long glacial moraine, extends out into the bay. On this narrow gravel bar, the harbor is home to commercial fishing boats, angling charter boats and a variety of pleasure craft. The Homer Spit also offers a range of seasonal shops, restaurants and charter fishing offices, as well as two popular campgrounds. As “the Halibut Capital of the World”, the port of Homer is famous for being the top commercial port for landing halibut. Charter boats also offer half and full day fishing trips for halibut and King salmon.
For an upland scenic view of Kachemak Bay, the drive along the Skyline Drive passes scattered homesteads all sited to capture the mountain views across the bay. Along the way, the Carl Wynn Nature Center offers a network of peaceful trails through forest areas as well as wild flower meadows.
