Beijing Muslims pray at mosque and buy celebratory food
(6 Jul 2016) LEAD IN:
Muslims in Beijing have been marking Eid al-Fitr.
After prayers, the faithful flocked to nearby restaurants to buy celebratory food.
STORY-LINE:
Rows of worshippers pack the Niujie mosque for one of Islam's biggest festivals.
The morning prayers are in celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Thousands have come to this Beijing mosque to worship.
After a month of fasting and religious reflection, Muslims across the world are beginning three days of festivities.
Worshipper Ma Jianping says he is very happy to be at the Niujie mosque.
Eid is a family event, and that means some people have travelled long distances to be with their loved ones - and to see how other parts of the country celebrate.
This lady has come from the far north east of the country.
I come from Jiamusi. I'm here to pay a visit to my sister, says Bai Meili.
I want to experience how people celebrate the festival in Beijing. The celebration here is as joyful and lively as it in my hometown.
And no celebration is complete without plenty of food.
Restaurants on Niujie Street, a well-known Muslim area of the city, are doing a brisk trade in snacks.
There's a wide variety for sale including the deep-fried, twisted noodle dish, Sangza, which is popular with China's Muslim Hui minority.
The food is often made at festival times.

Eid al Fitr celebrations, Beijing Style
The oldest and largest mosque in Beijing, the Niujie Mosque, stands on Niujie Street. The street’s name literally means “street of the ox”. Most people think it got the name because of the Muslims living nearby. They mainly eat beef and mutton — which raises the question: Why street of the ox, not ram?

Niujie Mosque Beijing (Part 1) 6-4-2016
NIUJIE MOSQUE
Niuji Mosque (actual name Libaisi Masjid) is the oldest mosque in Beijing built in 996 AD during the reign of Liao Dynasty. It was destroyed by Mongols under Genghis Khan in 1215 during their onslaught of civilized world and conquest of Beijing. It was reconstructed in 1442 during Ming Dynasty and expanded in 1696 during Qing Dynasty. Now it has an area of 10000 sqm (2.5 acre) and reflects a mix culture of Islamic and Han Chinese architectural style. It is located on Niujie Street (Cow Street) of Beijing’s Xuanwu District which is a largely Muslim inhabited area with big Muslim super stores, restaurants and shops. Lanzhou Lamiian (noodles bowl) is the special food available here at very reasonable price. The Mosque is within walking distance from Caishikou Station of Beijing Subway (Metro) system.

We have completed one month of fasting. Everyone is very worn out and tired, but today we are very excited because we can clearly see that thousands of Muslims have gathered here at Beijing's oldest Niujie mosque to carry out the morning prayers under the leading of our imam. There's no need to mention how wonderful this is.

Islam is a peaceful and harmonious religion, and Muslims also defend peace. Our religion has contributed a lot to peace. But for some of those who are different from the rest, they are not a representation of Islam or Muslims. It is entirely individual behaviour. So as imams of the Muslim faith, we also need to do our best to safeguard peace and harmony in society.

Eid al-Fitr occurs when the new moon is first sighted - and it's time to halt fasting from sunrise to sunset.
STORY LINE:
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan and hinges on the sighting of the moon.
China's estimated 20 million Muslims are observing Eid with the majority of the world this year, while neighbouring India and Pakistan celebrates a day later.
Around 6,000 Muslims, mostly of Hui and Uighur ethnicities, attended the Eid morning prayers at Beijing's largest mosque.
Wei Chunjie, the deputy director of the Niujie mosque, says that the festival is the busiest time for the mosque each year.
We have completed one month of fasting. Everyone is very worn out and tired, but today we are very excited because we can clearly see that thousands of Muslims have gathered here at Beijing's oldest Niujie mosque to carry out the morning prayers under the leading of our imam. There's no need to mention how wonderful this is,

CHINA: BEIJING: MUSLIM COMMUNITY & RAMADAN
Mandarin/Nat
A call to Friday prayers at a Beijing mosque marks the Sabbath for these Muslim worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan.
This is one of the ten mosques in the Chinese capital which serve the Muslim community.
At the Dongsi Mosque in central Beijing, Ahung or Imam Liu Ke Jie presides over the first religious ceremony on December 1, the first Friday of Ramadan.
Today's sermon serves to remind those assembled that their actions will lead to rewards or punishment.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Some people are good, some are less good, others neither work nor do religious discipline. So the Ayatollah says some go to heaven, some go to inferno.
SUPER CAPTION: Ahung Liu Ke Jie, Mosque Imam
Ahung Liu is joined in prayer by about 80 men and boys from his congregation, one of several Muslim enclaves in Beijing.
Among the faithful is Abukelimo who kneels in worship with and his four year old son.
Abukelimo is a respected leader in the neighborhood and a model of religious discipline who migrated to Beijing ten years ago from China's westernmost Xinjiang Autonomous Region, home to most of the country's Muslim minorities.
Islamic religion was brought to China from the Middle East some 1300 years ago.
Since then the Muslim population has grown to 18 million from ten distinct ethnic minorities -- mainly the Hui, Uygur, Kazak, Ozbek and Tajik -- which have settled throughout China, but mostly in the northwest.
The Hui people form one of the China's largest minorities.
Pressures of city life mean most Muslims must divide their time between work and prayer in the mosque.
Ahung Liu Ke Jie strives in his sermon to emphasize the importance of devotion during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Ahung calls on the congregation to strictly follow the rules of fasting this month in order to preserve Muslim tradition and adhere to the word of the Koran, the holy book of Islam.
He also emphasises efforts to strengthen ties between followers of Islam and China's ruling Han majority.
Ignorance of Islamic religious customs has led to violent clashes recently between Muslims and Chinese paramilitary police in Shandong Province.
Muslims in Beijing have heard reports of ethnic unrest in other parts of China.
Abukelimo, whose name in Uygur means 'good man', manages a popular Muslim restaurant in the western part of Beijing, the largest Uygur community in the capital.
He prays five times a day and attends the mosque each Friday with his son Azimati.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
I have my own restaurant, so it is my decision when not to go the restaurant. The restaurant is important, but not as much as the mosque. And company's work has to be done on time, and the employees can't leave work, they really have no other choice.
SUPER CAPTION: Abukelimo, Restaurant Manager
Uygur people are famous in Beijing for operating successful restaurants offering traditional cuisine.
To refrain from eating in the presence of so much food is a challenge for Abukelimo.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Before six a.m. and after five p.m. we break fast. During the daytime, no food, no water, nothing in mouth.
SUPER CAPTION: Abukelimo, Restaurant Manager
As darkness sets in and the daily fast is broken, Abukelimo gathers his family for prayers before they enjoy their dinner.
The traditional Uygur dinner includes fruit, bread, rice and mutton.
Following the meal Abukelimo and his family rest, a scene which is repeated quietly in Muslim households throughout China.
