PHUKET, THAILAND - travel shorts
The island of Phuket has long been misunderstood. Firstly, the ‘h’ is silent. Ahem. And secondly, Phuket doesn’t feel like an island at all. It’s so huge (the biggest in Thailand) that you rarely get the sense that you’re surrounded by water, which is probably the reason why Ko (meaning ‘island’) was dropped from its name. Dubbed the ‘pearl of the Andaman’ by marketing execs, this is Thailand’s original flavour of tailor-made fun in the sun.
The island’s sin city of Patong is the biggest town and busiest beach. It’s the ultimate gong show where beachaholics sizzle off their hangovers and go-go girls play ping pong…without paddles. But ultimately the island’s affinity for luxury far outshines its other stereotypes. Jet-setters come through in droves, getting pummelled during swanky spa sessions and swigging sundowners at one of the many fashion-forward nightspots or on their rented yacht. And you don’t have to be an heiress to tap into Phuket’s trendy to-do list. With deep-sea diving, high-end dining, and white beaches all within reach, it really is hard to say farewell.

STORYLINE
Local shopkeepers on Phuket's Patong Beach are frantically trying to rebuild their stores so they can start trading again in the hope that the tourists will soon return.
Those lining the parade along the beach front once had enviable views of the sea but they were also the worst affected when the tsunami struck on December 26.
For eleven years, the owner of the Designer's Gallery would tend busily to tourists wanting to buy tailor-made suits or dresses.
Like other tailors in the country, Mohan Saddarangani offered handmade garments at a fraction of the price it would cost in the West.
On the day the tsunami hit, Saddarangani's shop was closed because it was a Sunday.
He escaped with his life, but his store was destroyed.
Two weeks later, and builders are busy trying to reconstruct his shop.
Saddarangani is eager the work is completed as soon as possible as he wants to reopen by next week.
Like other local businessmen, Saddarangani is urging tourists to return.
At the Phuket Graceland Resort, owner Makin Wong is hoping a concrete wall between the hotel and the sea will provide protection if another disaster should strike.
Wong jokingly compares the structure to the Great Wall of China.
Rita Ho, the owner of J.S. Gems, can't wait the three months it will take to rebuild her shop.
She has begun selling a few pieces of jewelry from the front of her damaged shop.
The bracelets and necklaces only survived because they were locked up in the safe.
Everything else was swept away to sea.

What To Expect At Muay Thai Class At AKA Thailand
One of the most common questions we get from new students is what can they expect from our Muay Thai classes. Hard training is the obvious answer, but our coaches are all highly experienced, professional and friendly too. They will guide you through our daily program under the leadership of Head Trainer, Kru Lamsongkram Chuwattana, to ensure that you leave each class feeling confidant with what you learned that day and excited to return for the next session.
Every class starts with a 10 minute run around our large matted facility followed by 5 minutes of jumping rope to warm up your calves and increase your heart rate. If you like to run, you can also join our fighters on their road run before class. After every one breaks a sweat our trainers will take you through a dynamic stretch to loosen the body, then lead right into wrapping hands to prepare for the session. Our trainers move from student to student to make sure everyone wraps their hands correctly, and for beginners, they will wrap them for you until you are comfortable doing it yourself.
Following the warm-up, we move into shadow boxing. This is a great time to think about the techniques you learned during previous sessions and run through them to refresh your memory, while also working on fluidity and becoming more confidant in your movements.
Once everyone is geared up with their gloves and shin guards, Kru Lam and our trainers display the techniques you'll be working on during that session, demonstrating in front of the class, then pairing students to practice together. Some of our trainers pair up with students while others monitor to ensure that everyone is using proper technique.
Finally we move into the heart of the program: Muay Thai or (depending on the day) boxing sparring, clinching, pad work and bag work. This is where our program runs like clockwork. The trainers will assign you a station, either on the bag, hitting pads with a trainer, or in the ring to spar or clinch with other students. Our trainers will spar with you in between coaching too. For all partnered activities, you will be paired with a student around your size and skill level and the trainers keep a close eye on everyone to monitor the pace and make corrections and suggestions. Sparring is always optional but highly encouraged!
At the end of class you will be taken through some conditioning exercises: ab work, bodyweight drills and cardio drills like speed punching on the bags. These are all great for improving your cardio and stamina, and lead right into the final cool-down segment of the class. You'll be taken through a final stretch to lower your heart rate and catch your breath, then you can head off to eat, sleep and/or prepare for your next session.
Our trainers speak English and can accommodate all skill and fitness levels. They can also work around injuries and tailor your individual training to make sure you get the most out of each class.
If you have been thinking about coming to train but are still hesitant, just send an email to info@AKAThailand.com. Our hostess will gladly ease any of your concerns and help book your stay with us. Check out the video on our Muay Thai class, and rest assured that you won't regret your decision to train with us!

Vlog 18
Whats's up guys?!! We made it from Krabi to Phuket via a very long and sweaty van ride!
We decided to stay in the centre of Patong - We like to be in a central area and explore by foot to really see and get to know the area!
We are booked at this 4 star hotel for two nights, we will definitely be enjoying the bit more of comfort - extra large bed - decent shower and the rooftop pool!
Upon strolling through the main road of patong, we could help it, we accepted the offer to get Papi a custom made suit! At a super bargain price! It's amazing they're so used to doing these that it was ready in one day!
Patong so far has been one big surprize!! it is definitely full on, and the nightlife here is heavy!! Coming here as a family you definitely have to take this with a light heart! But one thing you will find is that the people will back off a little bit when they see us a family they tend not to be as pushy, because ofcourse... we are not interested in seeing a ping pong show hahah!
Patong beach is one busy place! The unsafe parachute activity is unreal!!! I have never seen anything like this in the world...and honestly i don't think i ever will!
We are definitely enjoying the area!!

Funny street performance and nightlife at Soi Bangla, Patong
Bangla Road really comes to life once the sun sets. The road is closed to vehicle traffic and becomes a 400 metre festival of neon lights and loud music. Street performances are also common most nights, which can make dodging around the tailor shop salesmen, leaflet distributors and street vendors more difficult, but it is all part of the fun.
