Merrill Cagley, age 99, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Westridge Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with reverend Andrew Rubenking officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Nodaway Valley Historical Museum, Clarinda, Iowa. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on our website at, ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa.
Merrill Lee Cagley was born February 14, 1916 near Clarinda, the second child of Lee Cagley and Frances (Finley) Cagley. He attended rural schools and Clarinda Schools graduating from Clarinda High School in 1934. He attended Clarinda Junior College for one year and farmed for three years before working a variety of odd jobs that included serving as a part time employee with the Telephone Company and working in the boiler room at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute. He worked for Lockheed Corporation (American aircraft designer) of California for three years during World War II. Merrill assisted with the final assembly of the controls for bombers manufactured at the plant and designed a part for the assembly. He also worked at the Glenn Martin Aircraft Company in Omaha. He was drafted and served in the United States Army 1945-1947. During this time he witnessed several rocket launchings.
Merrill returned to the Clarinda area doing custom farming and in 1954 returned to the farm that had been operated by his grandparents, parents and uncle. He was united in marriage in 1947 to Maxine Hazelton Wilson who preceded him in death in 1995. In 1996 he married Evangeline Scott Hitchcock who also preceded him in death in 1999.
Merrill was very active in the community; he was a member of the Clarinda Saddle Club, served on the board of directors for Fremont/Page Soybean Association, active at the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum. He and Maxine enjoyed square dancing. Merrill faithfully attended the First United Methodist Church.
Preceding Merrill in death were his parents; wives; step son, Donavan Wilson; sisters, Ruth Munson, Marjorie Miller, Jackie Akers and Dorothy Kennedy.
Left to cherish his memory are step daughters, Eleanor Wilson Sharp of Colorado, Marjorie Ann Hitchcock of De Pere, Wisconsin, Sue Kimble of Brookfield, Missouri; several step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and one very special great niece, Glenna Leeson and husband Rick of Clarinda, Iowa.
Merrill will be missed by his loving family and friends.
He will be forever in their hearts.
May God grant comfort and peace to those who mourn his passing.
