ABOUT US: Mat McLachlan is a leading international battlefield historian and has spent more than two decades walking the great battlefields of history. His tour company, Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours, takes travellers and history lovers to battlefields all over the world, in Europe, Asia, the Pacific and North America, escorted by the world’s leading military historians.

GETTING THERE: Hire a car or catch a train from Paris, or join an organised tour.
WHERE TO STAY: The two main towns are Bayeux (for the American Sector) and Caen (for the British/Canadian Sector). There is a range of accommodation in each.

Places to see in ( Caen - France )
Caen is the capital of northern France's Lower Normandy region. Its city center features the Château de Caen, a circa-1060 castle built by William the Conqueror. It stands on a hill flanked by the Romanesque abbeys of Saint-Étienne and Sainte-Trinité, which date from the same period. The multimedia museum Le Mémorial is devoted to WWII and the Battle of Normandy.
It is located 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) inland from the English Channel, two hours north-west of Paris, and connected to the south of England by the Caen-(Ouistreham)-Portsmouth ferry route. Caen is located in the centre of its northern region, and it is a centre of political, economic and cultural power. Located a few miles from the coast, the landing beaches, the bustling resorts of Deauville and Cabourg, Norman Switzerland and Pays d'Auge, Caen is often considered the archetype of Normandy.
Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen—heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city. The city has now preserved the memory by erecting a memorial and a museum dedicated to peace, the Memorial de Caen.
During the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War, Caen was liberated from the Nazis in early July, a month after the Normandy landings, particularly those by British I Corps on 6 June 1944. British and Canadian troops had intended to capture the town on D-Day. However they were held up north of the city until 9 July, when an intense bombing campaign during Operation Charnwood destroyed 70% of the city and killed 2,000 French civilians.[4] The Allies seized the western quarters, a month later than Field Marshal Montgomery's original plan. During the battle, many of the town's inhabitants sought refuge in the Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey), built by William the Conqueror some 800 years before. Both the cathedral and the university were entirely destroyed by the British and Canadian bombing.
The castle, Château de Caen, built circa 1060 by William the Conqueror, who successfully conquered England in 1066, is one of the largest medieval fortresses of Western Europe. It remained an essential feature of Norman strategy and policy. At Christmas 1182, a royal court celebration for Christmas in the aula of Caen Castle brought together Henry II and his sons, Richard the Lionheart and John Lackland, receiving more than a thousand knights. Caen Castle, along with all of Normandy, was handed over to the French Crown in 1204.

Caen, Normandy - France 4K Travel Channel
Caen, the capital of the Basse-Normandie region, was already settled during the days of the Celts. Caen is the old Celtic name for battlefield. In the Middle Ages, Caen was hard-fought over and over again. Wilhelm the Conqueror, the later English king Wilhelm I. shaped the face of the city substantially. He built the castle and two abbeys. Eglise Sainte-Trinité, formerly Abbaye aux Dames, was the abbey for the women and Eglise St.-Etienne, formerly Abbey aux Hommes, the abbey for the men, where he was buried later.
During the Hundred Years' War, Caen changed hands several times between England and France until it finally fell to France in 1450.
After two plague epidemics the city was taken by the Huguenots, but could quickly bow to the king again. Under Louis XIV, the Royalism helped the city to get a strong economic upswing.
The Jacobin prevailed in Caen during the French Revolution. A rebellion failed. Charlotte Corday, the murderer of Jean Paul Marat, lived here and left from here for the assassination.
In the 20th century, Caen had a central importance for the landing of the Allies, due of its strategic position in the Normandy. Caen was almost completely destroyed.
We arrive at Caen at variable weather and primarily wanted visit the Citadel. Within the massive fortification is the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) with a sculpture park. The museum houses a collection of stings and the most important collection of European painting of the 16th and 17th century.
The former harbor of Caen is now silted and pushed forward 15 km. As a new rain threatens, we stay only briefly in the city and drive towards the coast.

please read more:

This last weekend my program's group traveled to Normandy and Brittany. It was a very cool trip! On Saturday we drove from Paris to Caen, Normandy. We visited the Memorial de Caen, which is a museum/memorial from WWII. Caen was a city during WWII that was occupied by the Germans, and it was a major victory when the Allies were able to seize it. After Caen, we drove on to Omaha Beach to the American Museum there. It was beautiful, haunting, and eerie to see the sight of where the troupes landed on D-Day. When I was in the museum, I was listening to an interactive audio recording of soldier's experiences from D-Day, and the first button I happened to push was of a soldier from Mt. Vernon, IL! What a small world. To climb down to the actual beach part of Omaha Beach took awhile. It's very steep to get down to the shore, it's hard to imagine how difficult the soldiers had it. Seeing the sight at Omaha Beach really made me feel proud to be an American. After the beach, we drove onward to Saint-Malo, which is on the coast, and is a walled city. We stayed at a cute little hotel, similar to a B&B and had dinner at a nice restaurant, too bad I ordered my steak too rare...
