Normandy: War-Torn Yet Full of Life
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | In peaceful Normandy, we explore the half-timbered charm of Rouen, reflect on Monet's lily ponds in Giverny, peek in on local artisans, and set up an easel at Honfleur's harbor. We venture into composer Eric Satie's eccentric world and feast on the finest of Normandy cuisine. After pondering sacrifice and celebrating freedom on the D-Day beaches, we hike with pilgrims to the enchanted island abbey of Mont St-Michel.

Bayeux, Normandy
Bayeux is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy in northwestern France.
The town can trace its roots back to the 1st century BC. From the Viking raids of the 9th century, to the Hundred Years’ War.
Bayeux retains beautifully preserved timer-framed houses, mansions flanked with towers, vast town houses and elegant private residences.
The center piece of the community is without-a-doubt the magnificent Cathedral Notre-Dame de Bayeux. Bishop Odo of Conteville consecrated this Norman-Romanesque-Gothic shrine in July of 1077.
The trail along the River Aure offers pedestrians and cyclists a relaxing pause and the opportunity to get a closer look at old restored mills and wash houses.
A chance also to admire from another angle Bayeux’s rich heritage including the cathedral.
Bayeux is home to the largest British military cemetery in France. Some 4 000 British soldiers who fell during the Second World War rest there, beside soldiers of many other nationalities.

Travel France - Tour Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy
Take a tour of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
Hi, I am Naomi and I am very excited to show you the world's greatest attractions.
From the grassy plains of Normandy Mont Saint Michel rises dramatically out of the northern Atlantic.
Natural land bridges connecting it to mainland France and surfaced disappeared over time.
This tidal island started developing in the 6th century and now reaches a staggering height.
A maze of walkways and steep staircases make up much of today's landscape.
The walls of the island have witnessed many battles including the hundred years war.
The site has been used for religious purposes for many centuries.
However the abbey was also a prison for political descenders after the French revolution.
In 1979 it was named the UNESCO world heritage site for its natural and man-made beauty.
Though its physical connection to the mainland is tenuous, its allure is as strong as ever.
Thank you for watching our travel videos series. See you next time.

The Art and History Museum Baron-Gérard ( MAHB ) is one of three museums in the town of Bayeux in Normandy . Since its reopening in March 2013 it is an essential element of the triptych Bayeux Museum , the brand grouping the museums managed by the municipality, which are associated with the Bayeux Tapestry (Memory of the World of Unesco) and the museum-memorial of the battle of Normandy .
Housed in 1900 in the former Episcopal Palace adjoining Notre Dame Cathedral . Since 1951, he has been named after Henri-Alexandre Gérard (1818-1903), MP for Bayeux and patron of the museum.
In a permanent dialogue between palaces and collections, there are 800 archaeological or ethnographic pieces, nearly 600 works of art including 250 paintings and prints (Van der Goes, Clouet, Momper, Teniers, Champaigne, Bourdon, Boucher, David, Gros , Gerard, Boudin, Caillebotte, Van Dongen, etc. ), and more than 2,500 porcelains and lace, creations that have assured the influence of Bayeux around the world.
The history of the Bayeux museums began during the French Revolution in 1793, thanks to the work of an arts commission instituted to protect the most remarkable elements of the district's heritage , including the famous Bayeux Tapestry . The collections are first brought together with the jewel of medieval art in the gallery Mathilde until 1900, date of creation of the museum.
This is linked to the important donation made in 1899 Henri-Alexandre Gérard, nephew and sole heir to the painter François Gérard . The collection consists of this great lover of art is the painting background kernel xix th century museum with works of Jacques-Louis David , Antoine-Jean Gros and Gerard himself.
The museum tour develops over 1,700 m 2 in the form of an invitation to travel in fourteen stages through the history of European art, with the evolution of the town from prehistoric times to the beginning. modern period. Upon entering, the visitor is immersed in the intimacy of the city, the remains of the medieval chapel of the palace serving as a frame for the reception pole overlooking an interior garden enclosed by glass walls. Around this well of light is born the museum, through the evocation of its founders among which include the archaeologist Arcisse de Caumont and the geological framework that has shaped the characters of the soil that the public is invited to explore.

Mont Saint Michel - Normandy, France
France's Mont Saint Michel is an international treasure. The shrine to the Arch Angel Micheal was begun in 708. Today this extraordinary island is visited by 3 and one half million people each year. We stayed in Bayeux at the Churchill Hotel which arranged our tour. Bayeux is a great place to stay when visiting both the island and the D-Day beaches. We highly recommend the tour and the Churchill.
