Snugly nestled along the north shore of the Pamlico River, Washington, NC, is a small town with a storied past. As any local will proudly tell you, Washington, NC – not D.C. – was the first city in the country to be named after George Washington. In fact, some longtime residents still refer to their town as the Original Washington.
Washington is a study in contrasts. Famous for its laidback charm, there is nonetheless an undeniable vitality at its core. Just a few steps from genteel neighborhoods and centuries-old homes, downtown Washington is a hub of activity. The rebirth of the Harbor District has given rise to a slew of new locally owned businesses, from boutiques and art galleries to restaurants and coffee shops.
All of this progress, we are pleased to report, has not robbed Washington of its soul. Its allure – often quaint, occasionally quirky – remains intact. Washington is still home to scenic waterfront views and spacious wraparound porches, tree-lined streets and lamplit boardwalks. Oh, and crab statues. You’ll find them by the dozens all over downtown Washington. Just ask a local.

Founded in the year 1776, the old port city of Washington, NC is a place where life moves at a more relaxed pace. One perfectly suited to disconnect from the over-stimulated, hyper caffeinated world and reconnect with friends and family. A place to enjoy simple treasures surrounded by elaborate historic lore - like gorgeous pre-century colonial homes and storied old buildings adorned with ornamental brickwork lining the downtown Harbor District. I thought the change of pace from the highways of the Beltway of DC, this would be so much nicer. So I remember coming downtown and thinking, I would love to have a business downtown sometime. My friend Jenny, she ended up being presented the opportunity to do this Little Shoppes concept. And so we got this building, we rented the building, and made the divider and had the boutique one side and these 30 little individual shops on the other side. And we have all sorts of interesting items, one of a kind items, difficult to find items, and we’d like to think that you can come in here and there’s nothing we can’t provide for you. And we opened another store in New Bern and that’s where I met - or got to know - Rebecca Clark my business partner. We worked really well together and we said, let’s do this. So we did it and our friend Pat Lewis moved in the other side with South Market Antiques. So that’s the long version. So I got to do my business and we love it, we just love it.

The Bank Bistro and Bar, we’ve been here...coming up on our 3 summer. So we’re still kinda new here. Born and raised here, my dad and I; I came back when I was in my late 20’s. He retired and we decided to open up this restaurant. It’s the coolest place ever and it all kinda magically happened. It genuinely was just kinda magical how it all played out. It was a very easy process getting this going....it really way. The people in this town are genuinely very friendly nice people. So it’s a great thing to be able to every night have people that you know, new people come in, and out-of-towners, and be able to entertain them. My particular favorite thing goat cheese, pecan, cranberry salad. The customers favorite is the salmon. The beekeeper salmon, local honey, pecans encrusted, it’s amazing and everyone loves it. And our carrots are killer. We have carrots that basically taste like candy. So everybody thinks they’re eating candy, but it’s actually healthy. What do you love about Little Washington? Well the major is the river, everybody says that...it’s the river! But the people, knowing people, the roots I have, but it’s so green here and pretty. In the spring and summer it’s just you know, you don’t realize it until you get away from here just how beautiful this place is. It’s truly beautiful. It is! It’s a perfect little small town.

A place where you can disconnect from today’s over-stimulated, hyper-caffeinated society and reconnect with friends and family. A place where neighbors share smiles as well as sidewalks. A place where the loudest noise at night is the insistent squeak of the front porch swing. A place where the past is still present and the promise of tomorrow shines brighter with each passing day. Scott: We come into town and I see this humongous body of water and I remember thinking in my mind, that is a needle in a haystack.
Jim: What was part of my journey here was the inspiration from great old places. My desire, after being unveiled to what really makes great places great, was to find a place to go to work on one of those neighborhoods.
Phil: To find this jewel in such a sweet town, has been pretty special. That’s what I’ve been very excited about. So I’ve spent most of my professional career trying to create homes that have the feel of an old house. The proper proportion, balance, scale, widows aligning, but modern interiors and modern floorplans.
Scott: In additional to being directly in a historic district, directly by the downtown, and then right on the waterfront it’s a new home. You think about the fact that you’re living in a new home.
Jim: So if you can get everything you want, reaction, place, other things of an old house, but have it in something brand new, that’s modern and energy efficient, and laid out just the way you want...wow!
Justin: And the location is unique too. To be able to be on the water, in a park, in the downtown, in the historic district, and that just be a 5 minute or 10 minute loop around the neighborhood. That’s not something you would experience in really any other small town.
One of the things you would appreciate about the community is you have this charming and quaint downtown, but you also have all the modern convenience. You see the great shops, you see the restaurants, you see the arts district and a vibrant artisan community.
Scott: We’ve had the pleasure of meeting all the store owners and just their excitement over the city of Washington and what is going on.
Leigh: Little Washington has the best people you’ll ever meet, and I know that you see that or hear that from other places, but it’s truly the best part about this town.
Mary Carolyn: The people in this town are genuinely very friendly nice people.
Ronald: Very quaint and it’s just a great place to live.
Jeff: It is the best place to live in the United States.
Sue: I just absolutely love it here.
Stuart: The people are what make this town.
Justin: One of the things you would quickly notice when you come to town is the amount of activity in the community.
Carol: Our kids grew up kayaking, water skiing, fishing; before they could drive they would get in a boat and come downtown and get ice cream. You always feel like somebody’s watching and looking after your children. And it’s an easy lifestyle.
Scott: We’ve got this convergence of these different factors and if you just remove one of those, you may be describing another place, but you’re not describing this place.
