N.C. Transportation Museum Train Ride
The N.C. Transportation Museum regularly offers a 25 minute narrated train ride around the 57 acre historic site. Departing from Barber Junction Depot, the ride gives passengers a from the rails view of the site, what was once Spencer Shops, Southern Railways largest steam locomotive repair facility in the Southeast. Please visit nctrans.org to find out more about train ride schedules and museum hours.
The train pictured in the video is the Southern #2601 diesel engine, one of those that regular pulls the museum's passenger train or caboose train. The locomotive was built by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in 1963. The GP-30 diesel was produced from 1961 to 1963, selling 948 units to railroads throughout the United States. All GP-30s were equipped with 567-D3 16 cylinder prime movers connected to turbochargers generating 2250 horsepower. Many railroads, including Southern, used 4-5 GP-30s together to pull fast time limited freight trains. Southern continued to use their units until the late 1980s, with most retired off the roster by 1993. Norfolk Southern Corporation donated the locomotive to NCTHC in 1992, and later took the engine to Chattanooga, TN in 1995 for an exterior cosmetic restoration to Southern Railway early 1980s paint scheme.

Historic Spencer Steam Locomotive Repair Shops in Spencer North Carolina
Here are some shots of the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC and the restored steam engine No: 604. If you like the sights and sounds of steam engines, this clip is for you! The Southern Railroad abandoned the site when steam engines fell out of favor. Eventually, the property was turned over to the State of North Carolina. The state formed that Transportation Museum and has been steadily improving the site over the years. Definitively worth a visit if you like steam engines and old trains! Video taken Labor Day weekend 1989.
North Carolina Transportation Museum 2013
This was on August 13 2013. We rode on the 1:00 PM train. We had a little bit of confusion, but we got our cab-ride tickets. It was so neat that the locomotive was Southern 2601, the only GP-30 I've ever seen. Our engineer was Larry, he was so kind to us, and made us feel like we were part of the train crew. The best part was that i got to blow the horn. After my experience, I highly recommend checking out the North Carolina Transportation Museum In ; Spencer North Carolina

North Carolina Transportation Museum Visit 3-21-19
After Roanoke, we headed to Salisbury, NC. Yesterday morning, we went to the museum in Spencer, NC, which was definitely on the bucket list. The museum is really nice, and I like how they have an operating tourist railroad that takes you on a guided tour through the area. And I still prefer the Virginia Transportation Museum in Roanoke, but Spencer's more organized: They have certain collections in certain areas. At the pavilion in Roanoke, you can see cars, trucks, planes, and trains all near each other. Spencer's a nice museum, anyone who happens to be around the area should definitely look into visiting. Enjoy the video!
Clip 1: The museum excursion backs up to the platform behind N&W GP9 #620. Remember Winston from my Rails of Highland Valley special, Tale of a J Class? This is where he lives in modern days. I didn't find out till last year that 620 was painted black when it was first built. It was in the N&W Redbird scheme for years, but was painted back into black last year.
1. N&W GP9 #620
(1:44): Boarding the train. We were riding in Car #26, the New York, which has a very nice interior.
(3:07): The beginning of the tour! You can hear the conductor speaking over the intercom right before and as the train departs the station. We glide smoothly around the premises while passing old rolling stock and some cabooses. The VRE coaches caught my attention since they operate in my state. The Amtrak F40PH was a great sight too. We continue riding until we reach the NS yard, where we reverse toward the roundhouse where we disembark.
(18:25): An idling shot of the GP9. My dad took this shot.
(18:36): The museum excursion departs.
(19:25): Entering the roundhouse. Sit back and enjoy while we look through a U.S. Army camp car, an RPO car, a private car (couldn't go in it, but we could see inside it), Graham County Shay #1925, a U.S. Army switcher, and more.
(25:26): Next, we get a look at the diesel roundhouse where we see the museum's other diesels (a few which are operational alongside 620), which are SOU GP30 #2601, Beaufort and Morehead FM H-12-44 #1860, SOU FP7 #6133, SOU E8A #6900, and ACL E3A #501.
(27:00): Some shots inside the aviation section of the museum, including a full scale replica of the Wright Brothers' first plane.
(27:16): We go into another part of the roundhouse to check out more rolling stock as well as more steam and diesel engines. While in between a flatcar and some cabooses, I caught the excursion train going by on its next round of the day, once again with GP9 #620. Some of the more intriguing items over here include the Piedmont and Northern Boxcab electric, Duke Power 0-4-0ST #111, ACL 4-6-0 #1031 (which you can tour inside), SAL 2-10-0 #544, Southern 2-8-0 #542, and NS (original NS) Baldwin AS-416 #1616.
(31:44): Walking through an N&W caboose. The caboose interiors were fancy, and obviously, railroads don't need them anymore since crews don't work long hours anymore and that there's advanced technology to catch problems.
(32:07): Walking through the last building in the museum. This one contains old stagecoaches, canoes, vintage automobiles, trucks, and even a couple boxcars, one being British style saying Gratitude Train.
(33:34): Five second shot of the Studebaker. The old Chevys were attention getters, but I had to capture the Studebaker since it was one of my uncle's first cars.
(33:38): Walking alongside some of the rolling stock displayed outdoors.
(34:29): The museum excursion backs up to the junction that will take it back to the main depot.
1. N&W GP9 #620
(35:26): Going inside the Cone boxcar, which there wasn't much to see inside.
(35:48): The museum train pulls up to the Barber Junction depot to let off its passengers. This was shot in the parking lot as Dad and I were preparing to leave and head to the Salisbury Amtrak Station. I still love that N&W GP9 and its awesome RS5T horn. Once the train arrived, it would be out of service for the next hour or so, since on weekdays, the excursions start service at 10:30, 11:30, and 1:30.
1. GP9 #620
(37:14): A montage of still pictures I took while there.
