On a section of highway between mile 97 and 100, the travel lanes swap sides, with opposing traffic on the right. This accommodates rest areas in the median with standard right-hand exits. The rest areas are connected by a footpath, and the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park is located in between.
We pass through the city of Thomasville and then enter Randolph County and the city of Trinity. We conclude at mile 111 in the city of Archdale.

HOME FROM THE SEA U.S. NAVY MUSEUM SHIPS USS TEXAS, USS CONSTITUTION, USS MISSOURI 45844
Home from the Sea is a short U.S. Navy film that shows several of the famous U.S. warships—the USS Constitution, Niagara, Kairo, Olympia, Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, and Arizona—and where they rest today. The film opens with shots of wrecked ships. An illustration shows the warship Constitution, the ship’s captains Edward Preble, Isaac Hull, and William Bainbridge. There are illustrations of the ship in combat, and old photographs show the ship as it is being restored. Footage shows the restored vessel at its home in the Navy Shipyard in Boston (1:40). Next, the film shows the USS Niagara (02:08), the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry. Footage shows the ship’s canons on the deck as it is docked at the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA. Viewers see the leftover wreckage of the USS Cairo (02:55). Photographs show the Civil War-era ship, and the remains of the ship after it was raised from the Yazoo River. Next, the film covers the cruiser USS Olympia (03:24). Illustrations show Commodore George Dewey and the ship as it fights in Manila Bay. The next ship showcased in the film is the USS Texas (03:54), which is shown sails at sea as part of the British Grand Fleet during WWI. Footage shows it during Operation Overlord; viewers see the ship’s guns firing on German targets. Soldiers wade to Normandy’s shore. The film then shows the old warship as it rests at the San Jacinto Battleground Monument. An aerial view shows the USS North Carolina (05:17), the 35-ton super-dreadnaught. Viewers see the deck of the ship, with a plane parked on it, as well as the ship’s guns. The film shows the ship lit up at night at Wilmington, NC. Next, viewers see the USS Missouri (06:12), as it is docked at the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. Footage shows the Japanese surrender to Allied forces on 2 September 1945 on the deck of the Missouri (06:45). The film then cuts to footage of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS Arizona (07:18). An aerial view shows the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The film concludes with shots of the ships featured in the short film.
USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy named by President George Washington after the United States Constitution.
USS Niagara, commonly called the US Brig Niagara or the Flagship Niagara, is a wooden-hulled snow-brig that served as the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
USS Cairo was one of the first American ironclad warships built at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Cairo was the lead ship of the City-class gunboats and named for Cairo, Illinois.
USS Olympia (C-6/CA-15/CL-15/IX-40) is a protected cruiser that saw service in the United States Navy from her commissioning in 1895 until 1922. This vessel became famous as the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War in 1898.
USS Texas (BB-35), the second ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the U.S. state of Texas, is a New York-class battleship. The ship was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914.
USS North Carolina (BB-55) is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships, the first vessel of the type built for the United States Navy. Built under the Washington Treaty system, North Carolina's design was limited in displacement and armament, though the United States used a clause in the Second London Naval Treaty to increase the main battery from the original armament of nine 14-inch (360 mm) guns to nine 16 in (410 mm) guns.
USS Missouri (BB-63) (Mighty Mo or Big Mo) is an Iowa-class battleship and was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of Missouri. Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and is best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II.
USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship built for and by the United States Navy in the mid-1910s. Named in honor of the 48th state's recent admission into the union, the ship was the second and last of the Pennsylvania class of super-dreadnought battleships.

Ghost Caught on Camera at USS Yorktown
It’s no secret that Charleston is one of South Carolina’s most haunted cities. This year the ETV production team decided to highlight a place with lots of claims of unexplained paranormal phenomena…the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point.
The USS Yorktown has a long history dating back to World War II. The ship was a safe haven for her crew and now is a symbol of freedom and liberty.
Our ETV crew decided to learn more about the ship and investigate the claims of ghostly events by spending the night on the ship with cameras rolling. What we didn’t expect was actually catching a ghost on camera.
Do you believe in ghost or do you think this is all just hocus-pocus? Let us know via Facebook and Twitter @palmettoscene.
A special thanks to the crew of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point and USS Yorktown Ghost Tours.

USS Yorktown CV-10 / World War II Museum Tour - P1 of 2
The Commie bastards at Youtube disabled ads for this video, so fuck it I have disabled comments and other items.
This was my first stop on my two week mini vacation trip. I underestimated the time needed to see this memorial. Besides the Yorktown there is a US Navy destroyer and US navy submarine from the 1950's era. I would recommend giving yourself at least 5 hours if you want to see all three ships. There is a great park where you can have a picnic lunch in between touring the 3 ships.
My stops during this time included the Battleship USS North Carolina, then in Norfolk, VA the USS Wisconsin. While in Norfolk I made a stop to visit the General Douglas MacArthur museum. It is now in 2 buildings. Well worth seeing if you are in Norfolk. Before going on board the Wisconsin, you go through the Nauticus Naval Museum. It is well worth taking an hour or two even to see this museum.
From here I traveled across the south visiting family and friends. Making my last stop at Mobile Alabama. Here you have a memorial to the Korean war and veterans. There are a large number of military aircraft, tanks and field guns to view before you get to the Battleship USS Alabama. Before going on the Alabama, I toured the USS Drum. A World War II US Navy submarine. Go visit this submarine now if you can. They still have veteran US submariners on the boat giving stories of the US subs and their lives.
This was my last stop before coming home. I would recommend 5-6 hours to see all the memorials in Mobile. Again a great setting by the bay for a picnic lunch or late dinner even.
USS Yorktown (CV/CVA/CVS-10) is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. She is named after the Battle of Yorktown of the American Revolutionary War, and is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Initially to have been named Bon Homme Richard, she was renamed Yorktown while under construction to commemorate USS Yorktown (CV-5), lost at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Yorktown was commissioned in April 1943, and participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). She was recommissioned too late to participate in the Korean War but served for many years in the Pacific, including duty in the Vietnam War, in which she earned five battle stars. Late in her career she served as a recovery ship for the Apollo 8 space mission, was used in the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! which recreated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and in the science fiction film The Philadelphia Experiment.
Yorktown was decommissioned in 1970 and in 1975 became a museum ship at Patriot's Point, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is a National Historic Landmark. For more information see and
The last link provides all the information on visiting the 3 ships.
2012 Confederate Memorial Day - Sons of Confederate Veterans - WWW.SCVSAVANNAH.COM
Observance of Confederate Memorial Day at Forsyth Park in beautiful Savannah, Georgia! Each year at the confederate monument we observe Confederate Memorial Day to honor our confederate ancestors. I hope you enjoy the video of the event. Hosted once again by the Savannah Militia Camp 1657. This year's speaker was our very own Commander... Don Newman! Don't forget to visit WWW.SCVSAVANNAH.COM to learn more about how you can honor your ancestors too. It's all about Heritage... Not hate. Join us today!
An honor guard detail fired a 21 gun salute in honor of the soldiers from all of the southern ranks who paid the ultimate sacrifice between 1861-65. Members from the 22nd Georgia Artillery and the Black Creek Artillery fired a 21 gun salute with field artillery in honor of these same heroes.
At the conclusion of the events at Forsythe Park, we moved to Laurel Grove Cemetery where we paid tribute to the brave southern soldiers who perished in the Battle of Gettsyburg, 1-3 July 1863, and to the Savannah Volunteer Guards. These were equally two moving ceremonies. When I learned that only sixteen men from the Savannah Volunteer Guards surrendered to Federal troops with eight of them being Negro musicians and cooks less than a week before General Lee surrendered I know why I was there today.
On behalf of Commander Don Newman and myself of the Savannah Militia Camp 1657, a special thank you goes out to all of the men and women who made this a very special day in Savannah. A thank you goes out to those individuals who were part of the honor guard details, Francis S. Bartow Camp #93 for hosting this event, the Savannah Volunteer Guards, the fine ladies from the United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter 2, Captain Rick Phillips and Lieutenant Jim Willis of the 8th Georgia Infantry CoE, Captain Phillip Coleman of the 22nd Georgia Artillery who commanded the artillery field pieces, Mr. Stephen Newsome of the Savannah Militia Camp #1657 who videoed the entire events at Forsythe Park and Mr. Bobby Smith who directed the professional sound system for this grand event.
For those of you who were not in attendance on this date, the events at Forsythe Park will be downloaded on our web site at SCVSavannah.com for you to view. See attached photos and forward to those on your respective email lists.
Respectfully, Your
Obedient Servant
Ron Coats

USS Hornet: Tour the Ship That Brought Home Apollo Astronauts
Docked at a quiet, out-of-the-way pier near what was once Alameda's bustling Naval Air Station, the USS Hornet sits as a monument to the Navy, but also to the U.S. space program that successfully landed two men on the moon 50 years ago. We took a tour of the WWII aircraft carrier with expert docent Carl Bragg to learn all its history and trivia.
