Conway Scenic Railway 573 North Conway, NH
Once upon a time... in the land called New Hampshire, lie my aunt and uncle. They live in a very beautiful state (compared to Illinois? psh!) and so, my family went for a visit. My grandpa and grandma, sisters, and mother, and I of course, all drove through the White Mountains, where we stumbled on the little town of North Conway. I, loving trains, saw the station and went off on an expedition. After a while, we returned to North Conway and, in the old freight house, I found a model railroad. It was running trains and was really neat. We had a great time. I had no clue someone had even filmed the run around but my uncle did. He rocks!!

North Conway is a census-designated place (CDP) in eastern Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,349 at the 2010 census. A year-round resort area, North Conway is the largest village within the town of Conway, which is bounded on the east by the Maine state line. The White Mountain National Forest is to the west and north. Conway is home to Cathedral Ledge (popular with climbers), Echo Lake State Park, and Mount Cranmore. North Conway is known for its large number of outlet shops.
Chartered in 1765 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, the town is named for Henry Seymour Conway, ambitious son of a prominent English family, who was elected to the House of Commons at age twenty, fought at Culloden, and became Secretary of State. Early settlers called the area Pequawket (known colloquially as Pigwacket), adopting the name of the Abenaki Indian village which stretched down the Saco River to its stockaded center at Fryeburg, Maine.
North Conway is located in the White Mountains, with Mount Washington located to the northwest. The rugged terrain became popular in the 19th century with artists. Their paintings were known collectively as White Mountain art, which in turn attracted tourists to the area, particularly after the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad extended service in 1872 to North Conway. In 1874, the line built a Second Empire depot, designed by Nathaniel J. Bradlee. In 1932, snow trains began carrying enthusiasts to the birthplace of American skiing, as North Conway is known.
Increasing automobile travel brought the decline of trains. The railroad, then part of the Boston & Maine, abandoned passenger service to the area in 1961, and freight service in 1972. Subsequently, the Conway Scenic Railroad was established. Today, the line offers visitors a tour of the region, including Crawford Notch. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the late 1980s, the White Mountain Airport closed and was redeveloped as a large outlet mall called Settlers' Green Outlet Village. Continued growth through the 1990s and 2000s in North Conway and the villages nearby made Conway the most populous community in Carroll County. Traffic congestion led to an overhaul of the road system, including widening Route 16 through North Conway village and constructing a road parallel to Route 16 to allow traffic to move between Redstone and Intervale uninterrupted. A bypass of the area is being developed.
North Conway remains a popular destination due to its shopping, recreation, and attractions.

Train Through The Notch Part One
On a cold day, Columbus day to be exact, we went up to Crawford Notch and took this video. First we went to the cog Railroad and shot some footage. Then we went to Crawfords depot and got the train coming in. Sorry some cars and people got in that shot. Next we went to Fabyans and got the train there. Then we went to the first scenic overlook and went down the path under the bridge. We waited an hour for it to come! Next we went to a crossing at the beginning of the Notch. If anyone knows the name please comment. Next we went to Bartlett station, and there was a surprise there. Last we paced the train near the Glen Junction Restaurant. It was a very fun day!

Conway Scenic Railroad Train Entering Crawford Notch 7 23 09
I was hiking along the train tracks in Crawford Notch, NH last week (July 23, 2009) when I encountered the Conway Scenic Railroad, dual-engine, Notch Train on it's daily south-bound return trip. At the northern entrance to Crawford Notch, the road turns left and heads downhill, while the tracks turn right into a cut-out piece of mountain and head out along the west wall of the Notch. It's quite a place to see. I was standing at the south end of the mountain cut-out and took this video with my digital camera (Canon Powershot A610). Right place . . . right time. Enjoy.

Conway Scenic Railroad: Crawford Notch Station
Debarking the Notch train at Crawford Notch. I don't know any of these people in the picture. It was a bit overcast that day but the temp was in the low 70s, and we could see pretty far. The locomotive was switching to go to the front of the train for the return trip. We had about an hour at the station. August 29th

Conway Scenic Railway Notch Train - Crawford Notch at Willey House Crossing, September 2016
They warn you not to walk along the tracks here. It's remote, on top of a mountain near the trail crossing to Ripley Falls. I had just been standing on the trestle taking photos with my phone when I felt vibrations. Good thing I moved.
New Hampshire Northcoast video
A video I produced from my short lived movies production days. This was produced but never made it past editing which is a shame since NHN is once of the of the most finicky railroads to catch.
