Pt I: America's First Oil Boom in Northwest Pennsylvania (Exploring the Gerard Trail)
This is my first of a series of hikes I did at Oil Creek State Park, Pennsylvania (USA) in late Fall of 2017 and early Winter of 2018. I could never have imagined the amount of history preserved from the early oil industry in this State Park. The original equipment can be found strewn around the forest everywhere. There are even entire buildings intact, with large machinery inside. This is where the Oil Industry began with Drake's Well in 1859. Prior to the discovery of oil as an energy source, oil was an unwanted contaminant in salt wells and bubbling salt springs. The birth of the modern oil industry precipitated the end of the previous Whaling Industry, and gave birth to the industrial era. Whale's oil and blubber used to be used to power lamps. This video covers a section on the Southern portion of the 36-mile Gerard Hiking Trail beginning at Rynd Farm. This state park is about 12- 12.5 miles long, and the hiking trail covers the entire state park, with several bridges that cross Oil Creek. While I previously (Spring 2017) hiked a portion of this trail, I did not see nearly as much historical evidence of the first oil boom. The lack of foliage in the winter really opened my eyes to the hidden treasures of this park. I wanted to capture the story of the the oil industry before Texas big oil. Besides Drake's Well, there are numerous other wells, as the oil industry progressed. Pennsylvania continues to produce oil today (2018) with the oldest continuously producing oil well (McClintock 1), in Oil Creek State Park not far from Drake's Well. McClintock 1 has produced oil since 1861! Pennsylvania still produces enough oil to keep several refineries running. Texas gusher oilfields were developed around 1900 and production in that state soon eclipsed production in PA. Texas remains the top oil producing state at present. Old trusted Brands like Pennzoil, Wolf's Head, and Quaker State all had their origins in the oil fields of Northwest, PA where oil was found close to the ground. Some of the oil well structures in the park are replicas, while others are from the 1800's. The old wells were made of wood, and drilled less than 100' deep. I am not sure what the barrels are used for that are everywhere in forest. I suspect they once contained oil. Production was very low by today's standards. If you search, you can find rocks like the Venango Third Oil Sandstone in Northwest, PA that contain oil, and smell of petroleum. The oil in Pennsylvania was unique for it's high paraffin and is known as Pennsylvania Sweet Crude. Throughout the hike you will see the remains of old pipes that once held oil. They are rusted out in various states of decay, and full of holes. I apologize to the park staff if I was breaking the rules by hiking after dark. These sort of rules frustrate me, and it is unfortunate that we need to have such rules. In the future I try to leave the park shortly after dark (sometimes as late as 6pm). I know that there are rustic camping lean to shelters along the trail in various places, so people do spend time in the park at night. Where I was parked was not in the main part of the park, and easily accessible from PA State Route 8, so perhaps no one was concerned. Either way, I think there is something to be gained by being outdoors at sunrise and sunset that is centering, and good for the soul. I often enjoy the hikes most where I finish in the dark, especially in winter when the days are so short. It feels good to not let the darkness stop you. The experience of hiking at night is very different from hiking in the day, and it has it's rewards. One of the animals made a strange sound at one point (although I may have missed recording it). It scared me a little.
Information in this video and subsequent videos is as accurate as I understood it at the time of publication, and will be annotated and corrected as time permits, as I find out more accurate or interesting information.
In addition to the remains of the old oil industry, Oil Creek State Park is known for it's natural beauty, which includes numerous waterfalls. I never expected to see so many waterfalls, as I walked along the Gerard Trail. The trail is notable for having numerous hills as it winds through several drainages and sub-drainages or Hollows. Oil Creek is popular with kayaking, Canoeing and rafting enthusiasts. There is cross country ski area in the Northern Part of the park. I complete the hike back from the central portion of the park to my car at Rynd Farm after dark (5PM-7PM). On the way back the snow begins to fall, and it makes me happy. Later in the evening I drive North, past the Northern end of the park to Titusville, PA to get my mom a half gallon of half and half at Giant Eagle. On the way home, I see even more snow (Lake Effect) as I drive through Meadville, PA, and eventually reach Interstate 79. The hike back is shown toward the end of the film. I will make a separate movie with the drive.

YouTubers Who Died in Waterfall Plunge Were Inspired by ‘Jackass’ Movie
A tragic waterfall accident has led to the death of three popular travel vloggers. ‘High on Life’ YouTube stars Ryker Gamble, Alexey Lyakh and Lyakh’s girlfriend, Megan Scraper, were killed Tuesday as they were on their latest adventure in Canada. Reports say the trio was at the top pool of Shannon Falls in British Columbia when Scraper slipped and fell. The three were then swept by the current and plummeted about 100 feet into the waterfall’s lower pool. All three were killed in the fall.
How Tugboat Works
A tugboat (tug) is a boat that maneuvers vessels by pushing or towing them. Tugs move vessels that either should not move themselves, such as ships in a crowded harbor or a narrow canal, or those that cannot move by themselves, such as barges, disabled ships, log rafts, or oil platforms. Tugboats are powerful for their size and strongly built, and some are ocean-going. Some tugboats serve as icebreakers or salvage boats. Early tugboats had steam engines, but today most have diesel engines. Many tugboats have firefighting monitors, allowing them to assist in firefighting, especially in harbors.

Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey Tour Part 1
Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey Tour
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another journey. My buddy Cole & I took a tour of Stranahan's in Denver, Colorado.
This is what Wikipedia has to say about the history of Stranahan's...
Stranahan's was founded by Jess Graber and George Stranahan, after whom the whiskey is named, in Colorado in 2004.[1][2] In 1998, Graber, a volunteer firefighter, met Stranahan, the founder and owner of Flying Dog Brewery, while fighting a fire at Stranahan's barn.[3][4] They struck up a conversation about whiskey, and were soon in business together.[4] One of the first craft whiskey distillers in the US,[5] Stranahan's is said to have kicked off the Colorado distilling craze with its whiskey and the designation it invented, Rocky Mountain Whiskey.[6] It was Colorado's first microdistillery,[7] and the state's first legal distillery since Prohibition.[8]
The first batch of Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey was distilled in 2004 and bottled in 2006.[4] Stranahan's was sold to New Jersey-based Proximo Spirits in 2010, with operations remaining in Colorado.[1] By 2012, Proximo had increased whiskey production from around 12 barrels per week to 30, with plans to grow into the high forties.[1][4] Stranahan's was sold in 38 states and 7 countries until 2010, when Proximo decided to scale down sales to mostly the Colorado area, maintaining the whiskey's availability in its home state.[4][9]
Since 2011, Rob Dietrich has served as Stranahan's head distiller, after taking over from original head distiller Jake Norris.
