Drone Footage of The Block Island Southeast Lighthouse | Block Island, Rhode Island
Block Island Southeast Lighthouse is one of the most visually striking lighthouses in the United States. Though the tower is relatively short, its flashing green light shines forth over 200 feet above the water due its elevated location atop Mohegan Bluffs.

Lighthouse to Go (Accessible Preview)
The residents of Block Island fight to save a sea side lighthouse from beach erosion. They join together and hire a team of brothers to move the lighthouse back from the cliffs. The 2,000 ton structure is moved 300 feet in an effort to save it from the ongoing erosion of the bluffs along the coast of Rhode Island.

Block Island Fast Ferry - Journey From Newport, RI To Block Island
I grew up hearing the annoying radio advertisement, sail away on the Block Island Ferry, come with me to Block Island.
Finally, years later, I had the chance to do it. Luckily, by the time my journey came around, I had the option to depart from Newport, RI in addition to Point Judith.
The Fast Ferry from Newport was exceptional. The tickets were a bit pricey, with an additional fee for bikes, but the quick ride and convenient location made it all worthwhile.
Cruising out of Newport Harbor is amazing. The harbor is mostly filled with leisure boats of all sizes. Bright white yachts with crewmembers scrubbing the decks compete for attention with vintage sailboats and fishing boats.
Newport's great estates are on full display as the Block Island Fast Ferry makes its way past Brenton Point Lighthouse and into Narragansett Bay.
The engines begin to roar as soon as the ferry reaches the open seas. Despite the ferry's relative small size, it's undisturbed by the wake of other vessels.
As the wind picked up, we went inside the cabin and enjoyed a cup of tea. Before we knew it, the coast of Block Island was in sight.
The ferry docks in the commercial area of Block Island, a stone's throw away from the hotels, restaurants, and shops. The Block Island Ferry is a great service, and I'm glad that it's now available from Newport!

Block Island Rhode Island
Block Island is part of the State of Rhode Island about 13 miles from the coast in the Atlantic ocean.
With a population of under 1500 Block Island is small - about 5 miles with one town, New Shoreman. Getting around by bicycle or moped is of the best ways to see the island. There are lots of ponds within the island and good hiking, fishing and two large beaches - one, Crescent beach considered to be one of the finest beaches in the US.
There are two historic lighthouses on Block Island. The Southeast Lighthouse was was built in 1873. Because of bluff erosion, the lighthouse was moved in 1993 three hundred feet. The lighthouse also has a museum where you can see the original Fresnel lens.
Ferry service from the mainland arrives in New Shoreman and the harbor has a number of popular fish restaurants including Fins, that specializes in local seafood. The owner, I was told, has his own lobster traps and they serve, among some of their shellfish, Quahogs a hard shell clam that is also the fictional name of the town where Family Guy is set.
Other treats on Block Island can be found at The Ice Cream Place where homemade flavors are scooped out and served in cones. Including some nice takes of familiar passions like Almond Joy, Cake batter and Maple Walnut. There are also historic photos of Block Island on the walls to entertain you as you lick away.
The Oar restaurant at the new harbor which opened in 1965. There are over 900 painted and autographed oars along the ceiling and the walls of The Oar Restaurant and the only requirement is that the oar you give them does not contain obscene words.
The only words I can come up with for Block Island is a superb getaway -- and a bit of paradise lost.
Block Island, Rhode Island - Visit Us Anytime
- Friends and family from out of town are sometimes a bit perplexed as to Rhode Island's status as....well, an island. While most of the state is in fact, part of the North American landmass, RI territory does include Block Island, a small but incredibly popular tourist destination just 13 miles off the coast. Block Island is thought to have been named by the Dutch; explorer Adrien Block sailed past the island and lent it his name in 1614. In 1672, Block Island became part of the colony of Rhode Island, and the town of New Shoreham (still Block Island's only town) was founded.
Fast forward a few centuries, and Block Island has earned the nickname Bermuda of the North, thanks to over 17 miles of beaches, historic lighthouses, and an easygoing, moped-friendly spirit. Ballard's Beach, on the southern side of the ferry dock, boasts cocktail waitresses, a volleyball court, and daily live music shows. Ballard's Restaurant and Inn, set directly off the beach, provides these added amenities, and the area is especially popular among young Rhode Island residents in the summer.
