The Benevolent Asylum of Dunwich
Elisabeth and Althea from the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum discuss the history of the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum, an asylum where poor and old people who could no longer work were sent to live in Queensland between 1865 and 1946. This is a Storylines Q150 digital story. This digital story was made by the State Library of Queensland with funding from the Queensland Government. It is a legacy of the Q150 celebrations in 2009.

THE MYSTERY OF THE WRECK IN THE EIGHTEEN MILE SWAMP A Stradbroke Island Galleon.wmv
The mystery of the galleon in the Eighteen Mile Swamp is older than a century. I've known of it for many years because I live nearby, so I decided to try and see just how much I could find out about the possible identity of the ship. I'd often heard snippets of rumours about this and that, most of them quite wrong of course. Silly stories about Aboriginal people using gold dubloons from the wreck to buy things in town, that only appear on dubious websites, but none of these fantasy coins have even been seen at dealers in Brisbane or Sydney. It was quite a complicated and lengthy investigation, which is why I've had to split the video into four parts (this is not some kind of ploy to get more subscribers). It was to make editing more manageable. What I finally found surprised even me, I had not expected such a result at all. It completely changed my own views of the truth behind this legend.
The evidence is overwhelmingly convincing and because it contradicts some widely held beliefs, I had to be very careful about using certain photos in the video because of a possible danger of some people trying to shut it down. While I'd prefer not to make any allegations, I find it difficult to understand how anyone could have read Welsby's book and turned the information in it into the provenly false story of Juan and Woonunga that most people actually believe today by any innocent mistake. I hope the way I've replaced those few images with copyright issues with others will be understood because I'm blocking off any chance of false cries of copyright violation with this and with meticulous getting of permisson, and by the way, many thanks to the contributors who have given permission for me to use their great material, as seen in the credits.
Anyway, I hope it's interesting. If it were a TV special it would run for over an hour, there's even some possible deception involved and so much necessary explaining of the evidence. For example, who even knows what trunnels are? Perhaps only boatbuilders and marine enthusiasts these days perhaps, but that's one more aspect of evidence that appears in one of the other parts. The long list of witnesses at the beginning might put some people off, but this was, by all appearances, possibly even used to blur dates and the real picture and it was necessary to find out what really could be proven and what was simply made up or added. This allowed me to establish a correct enough time-line on which to base further documented evidence. This was what finally paid off and helped to identify the wreck. Sam Slick (or Tinker Campbell) would approve, I hope.
Parts 3 to 8 are complete but still being edited and should be uploaded in the next few days and weeks. I'm still waiting for responses re the use of certain images, one in particular would be great to include if possible. Some people however just don't repond to emails. I know the feeling though. One of my addresses is so swamped with spam that it's sometimes easy to miss any real emails.
Oh, if there's room here, the Sam Slick connection. According to Welsby, he was Fred Campbell's father! More to that in another secttion.

Dean Parkin
Dean is from the Quandamooka peoples from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in Queensland. He was involved in the negotiations leading to a Native Title determination in 2011 and continues to work with his community on this journey.
He helped facilitate all 13 dialogues that produced the Uluru Statement from the Heart. He is currently establishing a people's movement to promote political momentum for the Uluru Statement. He also runs his own consultancy aimed at co-design of strategic change, bringing people together and engaging them in dialogue.
This is the second event of Victorian Fabians' Spring Series for 2018, at which we'll discuss reconciliation, the strengthening of First Nations' voices, and their link with equality. It will feature talks by Dean Parkin and Justin Mohamed.
That the idea of reconciliation and the creation of a mechanism for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, on an equal footing, in the affairs of Australia dates back at least 40 years is itself testimony to the intransigence of the Australian political system in its lack of recognition of First Nations' voices.
Reconciliation Australia defines Reconciliation as based on five principles;
Race relations based on trust and respect, free of racism
Equality and equity of participation in a range of life opportunities, also recognising the unique rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Institutional integrity of political, business and community organisations to support reconciliation
Unity, so that our shared identity recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage
Historical acceptance, meaning that the wrongs of the past and the necessity for their redress are accepted by all Australians
These are big steps for Australia to take. How can we take them and emerge with greater equality?
