Charlotte police shooting: dashcam video released in Randall Kerrick trial - TomoNews
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — A dashcam video that captures the moment when Charlotte officer Randall Kerrick shot and killed former Florida A&M football player Jonathan Ferrell in September 2013 has been released in court as the trial enters its third day.
A newly released dashboard camera video shows Jonathan Ferrell walking towards the officers’ cars after they pulled up to a house Ferrell was believed to have been trying to break into. Ferrell is then seen starting to run toward the officers as lights hit his chest.
Officer Randall Kerrick then, off-screen, reportedly opened fire at Ferrell. Officer Adam Neal, whose car dashcam captured the footage, said after the initial volley of shots, Ferrell’s upper body fell on Officer Kerrick’s legs before the two fell into a ditch, WCNC reported.
Neal said Kerrick then fired additional shots when Ferrell tried to crawl up in a swimming-like movement, according to WCNC. Kerrick fired a total of 12 rounds at Ferrell, hitting him 10 times, the New York Times reported.
The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks.
