L’Opera EFIAN di ricostruzione virtuale di quattro aree del sito archeologico, finanziata dal Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca (MIUR) all’interno del PROGRAMMA OPERATIVO NAZIONALE “RICERCA E COMPETITIVITÀ” (PON R&C) 2007-2013, ha permesso, attraverso l’uso delle più moderne tecnologie informatiche e multimediali, di far fare ai visitatori un salto nel tempo, e precisamente un attimo prima del terribile terremoto dell’11 gennaio 1693.
L’Opera EFIAN ha visto coinvolti partner pubblici e partner privati, che hanno lavorato congiuntamente, ognuno con un preciso compito rispetto alle rispettive competenze e conoscenze, nel rispetto dei tempi di realizzazione di parte dell’Opera loro affidata. In particolare hanno partecipato le due più importanti Università dell’Isola, quella di Palermo e quella di Catania, con i rispettivi Dipartimenti di Architettura e nello specifico di Storia dell’Architettura, di Rappresentazione, di Progettazione; la fondamentale collaborazione del Comune di Noto che col sindaco Corrado Bonfanti ha messo a disposizione il sito archeologico, il museo civico della città e un prezioso contributo progettuale e di servizi perché l’Opera venisse realizzata a regola d’arte; due società private: la Services & Advice s.r.l. di Palermo, capofila della compagine societaria e coordinatrice di tutte le azioni progettuali, e la società di restauro Siqilliya s.r.l. di Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto; il partenariato esterno dell’Assessorato ai Beni Culturali della Regione Siciliana.

Noto Antica ovvero Netum, è l'antico abitato di Noto distrutto a seguito del terremoto dell'11 gennaio 1693. Municipium sotto il dominio dei Romani, capovalle dalla dominazione araba in poi e fregiata del titolo di civitas ingegnosa da Ferdinando il Cattolico, fu patria di molti elementi di spicco fra il XIV e il XVI secolo, nonché uno dei principali centri culturali, militari ed economici della Sicilia sud-orientale. Circondata da imponenti mura (molte delle quali ancora in piedi) e da profonde vallate del monte Alveria, non fu mai presa con la forza. Solo il violento terremoto del 1693 riuscì a distruggerla, causando nel Val di Noto oltre 60 mila vittime.

Il Monte Alveria ha ancora molte cose da raccontare sull'antica Noto, sin dal suo primo insediamento preistorico. Quello che è possibile visitare è solo una minima parte di quanto miracolosamente si è conservato, nonostante il terribile terremoto del 1693 abbia raso al suolo ogni emergenza architettonica. Noto Antica merita più di 29 minuti in video, merita una visita.

Netum or Neetum (Greek: Νέητον), was a considerable ancient town in the south of Sicily, near the sources of the little river Asinarus (modern Falconara), and about 34 km southwest of Syracuse. Its current site is at the località of Noto Antica (formerly Noto Vecchio), in the modern comune of Noto.
It was probably subject to Syracuse; a treaty was concluded in 263 BCE between the Romans and King Hieron II of Syracuse, Netum was noticed as one of the cities left in subjection to that monarch. We have no account of the circumstances which subsequently earned for the Netini the peculiarly privileged position in which we afterwards find them: but in the days of Cicero Netum enjoyed the rights of a foederata civitas like Messana (modern Messina) and Tauromenium (modern Taormina); while, in Pliny's time, it still retained the rank of a Latin town (civitas Latinae conditionis), a favor then enjoyed by only three cities in the island.
Ptolemy is the last ancient writer that mentions the name; but there is no doubt that it continued to exist throughout the Middle Ages; and under the Norman kings rose to be a place of great importance, and the capital of the southern province of Sicily, to which it gave the name of Val di Noto. But having suffered repeatedly from earthquakes, the inhabitants were induced to emigrate to a site nearer the sea, where they founded the modern city of Noto, in 1703.
The old site, which is now known as Noto Antica (formerly Noto Vecchio), is on the summit of a lofty hill about 14 km from the modern town and 20 km from the sea-coast: some remains of the ancient amphitheatre, and of a building called a gymnasium, are still visible, and a Greek inscription, which belongs to the time of Hieron II.

Situated in the south-eastern corner of Sicily, Noto is famous for its Baroque architecture, and since 2002 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto'. Generally listed as one of the 'must-see' tourist attractions of this part of Sicily, Noto is a pleasant and attractive little town, with a historic centre that is composed almost entirely of crumbling Baroque palaces, churches and houses. The town's striking architectural coherence is due to the major earthquake that struck Sicily in 1693. The old town of Noto was almost completely destroyed, and it was decided to to reconstruct a splendid new town several miles away. Thus Noto was rebuilt on its present site, carefully designed for functionality and architectural harmony.
The principal tourist activity in Noto is simply a wander around the narrow streets, admiring the golden-coloured stone buildings, the fantastical facades and balconies. The main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, runs from the imposing gateway of Porta Reale (close to the park and the bus stop) along past the Chiesa di San Francesco (1704-1745), which sits atop its long staircase, to the town's central piazza. Here the grand cathedral, the Duomo (1693-1770), faces the pretty Palazzo Ducezio (1746), now the seat of the Town Council. An admission fee of €1 admits you to one of the reception rooms within, the Sala degli Specchi ('hall of mirrors'), a palatial room with mildly interesting 19th Century frescoes.
Some of the fanciest balconies in town belong to the Palazzo Nicolaci (1739), where chubby beasts and cherubs stare down at Via Nicolaci. A suite of rooms on the second floor is open to the public (€1.50 admission). Sadly-dilapidated (although restoration work is promised), the wide spaces and painted walls evoke headier past times, as well as offering you the chance to step out onto a balcony and admire the view over Noto.
A third attraction open to the public is the Chiesa di San Carlo, back on the Corso. For € 1.50 you can climb the narrow spiral staircase up the belltower (campanile) to admire more views. Around Noto, other sites to see if you have a car include Noto Antica, the older, ruined town. There are further archaeological sites at Eloro (ruined Helorus) and Palazzo Acreide (former Akrai). Also within reach are Ragusa, a similarly-appealing Baroque town, the necropolis at Pantalica, and the provincial capital, Siracusa.
Over recent years an initiative has started to restore Noto's crumbling buildings - most crumbly of which was the famous Duomo, whose dome actually collapsed in 1996. While this preservation work may be good news, it does mean that some buildings are under scaffolding and several churches are closed to the public. Restoration of the on the Duomo finished in 2007 the building was reopened with much publicity and celebration
Other than the architecture, there aren't a large number of tourist attractions in Noto; and most visitors only spend a day here. However if you're looking for a peaceful place to stay for longer, there are a few B&Bs in Noto, as well as several in the countryside nearby (ideal if you have rented a car and want a break from Sicily's urban centres). More hotels can be found in Noto Marina, a coastal town about five miles away.
Noto is in the Province of Siracusa, and can be reached in about 40 minutes from the larger town. Two different bus companies operate on the route: AST (from Siracusa's Riva della Posta) and Interbus (from Via Trieste). Both buses also stop in Siracusa at the Foro Siracusano (buy tickets at the newsstand by the bus stop).
Noto's principal bus stop is by the Giardino Pubblico, to the east of the centre, at the top of Via Principe di Piemonte. Buses run not only to Siracusa but also to other Sicilian destinations such as Catania and Gela. Further down the road there is also a railway station.

Festa dell'Alveria - Noto Antica
Nel luminoso e caldo pomeriggio di domenica 29 maggio si è svolta nell'antica Noto la XXII Festa dell'Alveria, ancora una volta organizzata in sinergia fra l'I.S.V.N.A. (che la istituì l'8 maggio 1983) e il Comune.
La festa di quest'anno (introdotta dai saluti del Presidente e del Sindaco Bonfanti e dall'illustrazione del programma da parte del socio Vincenzo Belfiore, responsabile delle scelta dei gruppi) è stata dedicata alla rievocazione di alcune pagine particolarmente importanti della storia della città distrutta, anzitutto quella che nel 1424 vide la popolazione netina (sobillata dai nobili) in sommossa contro la nomina di Pietro d'Aragona, fratello del Re, a Duca di Noto, con conseguente perdita della libertà demaniale precedentemente goduta.

Dans ce quatrième volet de ma série consacrée aux vestiges oubliés, nous partons explorer les vestiges de Noto Antica en Sicile. Nous pouvons y admirer de nombreux vestiges préhistoriques monolithiques tels que des canyons artificiels formants des boucles alternées ainsi que de nombreuses cavités et autres structures bien antérieures à l'époque gréco-romaine, grand sac four-tout de l'archéologie conventionnelle. Le tout formant des ensembles homogènes à l'aspect de pâte à modeler donnant l'impression d'avoir été réalisé durant une période où la densité matérielle terrestre était plus faible qu'aujourd'hui.
