Astana, Kazakhstan Nurzhol Boulevard
Since 1997 Astana has been the capital of Kazakhstan.
The master plan for the city was designed
by Kisho Kurokawa, and is supposed to
represent a transition from the “age of machines”
to the “age of life” principles. The over 1 million
citizens of Astana live mostly in apartments and
are still heavily dependent on the automobile.
There are plans for bus-rapid transit and a
light-rail system, but neither were in place
in August 2017. The weather can be extreme, ranging
from highs of 95 degrees F in summer to lows 0f
-30 degrees F in the winter; the wind is fairly constant.
Downtown Astana is centered on Nurzhol
Boulevard, which is lined with modern buildings
and shopping malls. There is a central park
area that features fountains and public art, and
concert/performance facilities. The park stretches
from the Presidential Palace to the Kahn-Shatyry
entertainment and shopping mall, a distance
estimated to be about a mile.
As can be expected, some of the architecture
is quite grand, while some seems simply large
and new. The quality of construction is
variable and some of the plaza areas seem
to be suffering from poor construction
and/or maintenance.
