3. VIDEO GUIDE ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Calle Cava Baja is a fantastic street for a tapas crawl in Madrid. It’s got about 50 tapas bars in just one street, and is in the heart of the famous La Latina neighbourhood. But with so many tapas bars, how can you pick the good from the bad? That’s where this video comes in? Yoly and I decided to hit 7 of our favourites.
Here is Calle Cava Baja on a map:
1. Taberna La Concha: I love this spot for a pre-lunch vermouth. They make their own vermouth, and serve it with a few extra ingredients to give it extra kick. They always pair it with a delicious tapa. And their cooked tapas and wine list are also excellent. A great start!
2. Diaz y Larrouy: The wine bar has been around since 1992 and so is one of the grandfather’s of this street. They have 30-40 wines per glass, and serve delicious tostas. An excellent option for cava by the glass.
3. La Posada de la Villa: There has been a posada (or inn) here since 1642, and I adore hitting the bar in this old tavern. It’s more of a restaurant, but the bar is a great place to grab a glass and even just enjoy the free tapa. It’s just full of history!
4. La Posada del Dragón: These guys do more modern tapas, and I love their tomato salad. But beyond the food, this place is extra special as beneath the glass floor you can see the remains of the medieval walls that once surrounded Madrid.
Honourable mention: La Perejila - great little tapas bar that just didn’t make the final cut.
5. Casa Lucas: Famous on Calle Cava Baja. This place is always packed, but does delicious modern tapas and tostas, and they have an excellent wine list. Don’t worry if you can’t get a table - just squeeze on up at the bar!
6. Taberna Tempranillo: Another classic wine bar that’s been around for a number of years. These guys do an eclectic selection of modern dishes, as well as tostas. And of course great wine by the glass. Also - the wine rack against the back wall is spectacular!
7. Los Huevos de Lucio: Opposite is a famous restaurant called Casa Lucio. And in that restaurant they’re famous for their huevos estrellados (aka. Huevos rotos or broken eggs). Opposite Los Huevos de Lucio is their tavern, and you can get the same dish there. It’s simple, but it’s delicious!

I’m from New Zealand and have been living in Madrid since 2011 (which my Spanish wife, Yolanda). I’m a co-founder of Devour Tours, where we offer award-winning food & culture tours in Spain’s most delicious destinations. WHERE TO LIVE IN MADRID SPAIN AS A STUDENT, EXPAT, OR AUXILIAR DE CONVERSACION | MOVING TO MADRID
Subcribe
This video is about where to live and to avoid if you are moving to Madrid, Spain to study abroad, participate in the Erasmus program, teach abroad, participate in one of the language assistant programs such as the auxiliares de conversacion, BEDA or MEDDEAS, etc. This video may not apply to you if you are moving with a family to Madrid because you might want to live close to certain schools or in more residential areas. ***Link below to Madrid Neighborhoods Map
When I first moved to Madrid I lived in the Barrio de La Conception/Pueblo Nuevo area and it was alright, but about 30 minutes on the metro (not including walking to the metro) and the area was more residential. There are many areas outside the center that are nice, but I don’t recommend them because you will usually always be going to the center to meet up with friends.
Recommended areas:
Anywhere within 3-4 metro stops from “Puerta del Sol”
-Sol, Gran Via, Callao, Chueca, Malasaña, Plaza de Espana, Moncloa, Arguelles
-La Latina, Las Letras, Huertas, Embajadores, Lavapies, Atocha
-Salamanca, Chamberi, Rio Rosas
-Nuevos Ministerios and Plaza de Castilla (very north Madrid) are nice but definitely more business areas that the typical student/20 something might find less interesting to live in vs a business professional
***Madrid neighborhoods map:
*I would avoid anything out near the airport because it is just far away and anything North East such as Hortaleza area and beyond and anything east/southeast of retiro because it is also far away from the center. It could work if it is close to your school or place of work, but it is kind of boring otherwise. If you are living with a significant other, then you might have more flexibility.

3. ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
I remember about two years ago when I was giving a tapas tour in Madrid for my company Devour Spain, and in the first bar one of my guests said to me, “Are we in a tapas bar now?” Boom! That’s when I realised that although tapas have gone global, people who are visiting Spain for the first (and second) time often have no clear idea of what it really means to go out for tapas in this country. Or actually what tapas actually are.
And I don’t blame them. It’s flat out confusing. So, I made this video to try and explain what – after four years in Spain – I think tapas are. And to give you my three hard-won tips for going out for tapas like a local. Watch, learn and drool!

Calle Gran Via and Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Calle Gran Via is Madrid's magnificent shopping street is. The broad boulevard cuts a lane from the Plaza de Espana in the northwest of Madrid up to the Plaza de Cibeles in the east of the city. Prominent and the highest building is the Edificio Telefónica, about halfway. The street is lined by hotels, shops, cinemas and theaters. The partly monumental houses with their beautiful facades radiate wealth and also architectural imagination. Particularly the splendid statues on many roofs of the buildings are remarkable, such as the Victoria installed on the Edificio Metropolis in 1972.
The traffic usually streams continually through this street, but suddenly everything was different. No cars and the Madrilenians quickly discovered the street as a leisure area for cycling, photography or just for walking.
We quickly recognized the reason. The police cordoned off the street and in the distance we could see a demonstration. With loud slogans the participants moved along the street. A Spanish woman tried to explain us the reason for the demo, but due to our lack of language skills, we could only understand that the demonstration was directed against an auction house.
Thanks to the demo, we were lucky to experience the Plaza de Cibeles almost without traffic which granted us good possibilities for filming. In the middle of the square is the Fuente de Cibeles, dedicated to the Greek goddess Cybele. The fountain was built in 1782. The square is surrounded by the buildings Palacio de Buenavista (Headquarters of the Army), the Palacio de Linares and the magnificent Palacio de Comunicaciones (seat of the Municipality), which since 2011 is called Palacio de Cibeles. In the background is the Puerta de Alcalá, the former city gate, which we had seen already once.
We go on to the Plaza de las Cortes with the monumental fountain Fuente de Neptuno. At the corner there is the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. We leave it on the right and continue along the Congreso de los Diputados to the Puerta del Sol.

4. EPIC MADRID FOOD TOUR! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid has amazing food.. there I said it! Often when people think of Madrid they think of museums and art and maybe a trip to Toledo. But trust me, this city has an incredible food scene that is less touristy and more underground compared to some other cities in Spain. So, I wanted to make this Madrid food guide so that you can enjoy it like a true local!
Today I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10 incredible bites. We start with the best chocolate in the city (melted from actual chocolate) at an over 100-year-old pastry shop. Then we head to a local and hidden family-run joint for the city’s top Spanish omelette (tortilla española) and a beer (caña).
Next up! Vermouth time. We nip across to the San Miguel market for a sweet red vermouth on tap just like the locals do (along with marcona almonds, campo real olives and a local skewer). Then we head to a SECRET STOP. Cloistered nuns who bake cookies in - the cookies are delicious and moreish and the experience is truly one-of-a-kind. As a friend used to say, like doing a drug deal!
OK… getting full. Next stop - jamón… ham! And the good stuff - acorn-fed jamón ibérico in a family-run ham shop. Around the corner we head to an over 100-year-old tapas bar for one of the most delicious tapas in the city - bull tail stew parcel, paired with a Rioja wine.
Next it’s Madrid’s most famous bite - the calamari sandwich. There are so many places that do this, but we head for the best one! And for more seafood, we swing around into the La Latina neighbourhood for the best bacalao in the city, served with a white wine in a place that is a true Madrid rough-and-tumble tapas bar.
And then - tapas. We swing into Casa Toni, a fantastic tapas bar that does brilliant sweetbreads - mollejas - a delicacy in many restaurants around the world, and here deliciously cooked with skill on the griddle.
And finally, dessert … we head to the most famous pastry shop in the city for the napolitana de crema. The perfect sweet end to a fabulous Madrid food tour. Siesta time!
