Rented space, Moscow
Garage Museum of Contemporary Art presents Open Systems. Self-Organized Art Initiatives in Russia: 2000–2015.
Since 2000, the Russian art scene has witnessed the rise of artists’ DIY initiatives, including independent non-profit spaces, exhibitions in deserted factories and underground crosswalks, street festivals, internet projects, and apartment shows. Together these reflect the autonomy of emerging generations of artists from both state-run and private institutions. Open Systems is a live, research-based exhibition that presents self-organized initiatives, exploring the phenomenon through the perspectives of artists who have pioneered projects over the past 15 years.

The Boot Restaurant Pectopah Valenok, Tsvetnoy bulvar, Moskva MOSCOW RUSSIA
HOMEMADE BREAD FROM VALENKA
In Valenok restaurant, you can always buy fresh, fragrant, just baked bread, which on the eve of holidays will be a great addition to any table.
WINTER IN VALENOK RESTAURANT
VALENOK
Russiano and vitamin teas - another reason to come to a sensational restaurant of Arkady Novikov Valenok.
CHILDREN'S PARTIES IN RESTAURANTS ARKADY NOVIKOV
list of restaurants
Exciting workshops, educational games, shows and performances - every weekend in the Novikov Group restaurants will have an interesting little fidgets interactive program.
A symbol of the restaurant is a giant six-meter felt boot (Valenok) - a piece of art called «Russian Size», created by the contemporary artist Valerie Loshak. It won the popularity and love in Instagram even before the opening. The world’s largest handmade Valenok symbolizes Russia with its big soul and vastness.
The restaurant also impresses by its almost unlimited space: eight-meter ceilings, two-storey windows and a space atrium. Inside there is a sitting area for at least 340 persons. The inner yard will be furnished with umbrellas and tables for another four hundred guests closer to the summer.
The international menu is principally built on the Russian products: beef is imported from Bryansk, fish - from Murmansk, rabbit - from Voronezh, milk products – from Dubna. Even vegetables are fresh and natural here - it’s spring time! Sergey Batukov, («Strana Kotoroi Net», «Minselkhoz») Chef of Valenok, cooks simple food: tender forshmak, sufficiently hot ajapsandali, tiny pies, juicy chicken Luleh kebab, fragrant homemade noodles with braised lamb, manti and cheburekki, grilled pike perch with barley porridge and crab cakes. Chef and his team use a wood-burning grill, robata grill, tandoor and smokehouse located at the absolutely open kitchen which sometimes transforms in a vegetable row of a grocery market in the best tradition of Novikov.
Desserts deserve an individual attention. Marina Nosova (Vogue Cafe) is a pastry chef of Valenok and it means that you can easily visit the restaurant just for tea (samovar tea drinking will start soon) and spend a half of the day by tasting completely unique cakes, pies and pastries. Taste the childhood with her crispy rolls with protein cream and homemade funnel cake! Enjoy the legendary «Napoleon» cake with pastry cream and almost weightless cake with strawberries which simply disappears from the plates in an eye blink!
Valenok plans to switch to the club life on Fridays and Saturdays: parties, live music, concerts of young bands (five days a week from Wednesday to Sunday) and other fun that will be organized by the art team led by Ina Tundra . Younger guests will be entertained not less than adults: a kid's room will be designed for animation workshops. Running of the family brunches is also the nearest plan for the Valenok team.
But the main trump card of a new place is the price – RUB 1200-1500 for one guest. No matter what is more important and useful for you from the range of services but one thing we know for sure: when you see the bill, you will be definitely surprised!

Zaha Hadid's only house finally completes in Russian forest
New photographs and a movie reveal Zaha Hadid's only completed private residence – a house in the Barvikha Forest near Moscow, for a man she called the Russian James Bond.
The late Iraqi-British architect designed Capital Hill Residence for businessman and philanthropist Vladislav Doronin, who runs property companies Capital Group and OKO Group, and is also the owner of luxury hotel and resort brand Aman.
The house's defining feature is a master suite set atop a slender concrete stalk that raises it high above the tree canopy.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: COMMEMORATIVE EXHIBIT ANNIVERSARY
Eng/Russ/Nat
It's forty years since the historic kitchen debate, in which the late Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev said communism will ultimately prevail over Western democracy.
This prophecy didn't materialise and Russia itself is embracing the capitalist ways described as decadent in the days of Khrushchev and other Soviet leaders.
Forty years ago the Soviet public got the first glimpses of the much despised capitalist system thanks to the first ever exhibit staged by the United States in Moscow.
The exhibit attracted thousands of Muscovites who lined up for hours to get inside the exhibition complex.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I made the first agreement with Prime Minister Kosygin who incidentally was very interested in opening up the market. It was difficult getting going in. There were a lot of things that you had to do that you didn't have in other countries. But it worked out very well. Just it took a little patience.
SUPER CAPTION:Donald Kendall, Pepsi Co
The exhibit was attended by the then Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev and President Eisenhower.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
After all we had cooperated as allies during world war two and there was the time then when our relations were almost totally interrupted. This exhibit represented really an effort for the first time to develop a broader base for the relations and to open up the opportunities for commerce and trade. That was a pioneering moment.
SUPER CAPTION:James Collins, US Ambassador to Russia
But it was Khrushchev's conversation with Vice President Richard Nixon that eventually evolved into a debate about the advantages of the two countries' respective political systems.
Standing in a model American kitchen, filled up with all sorts of utensils and equipment unheard of in the Soviet Union at that time, Khrushchev promised to Nixon that his grandchildren would live under communism.
Nixon retorted by saying that it was more likely that Khrushchev's grandchildren would live under capitalism -- and he was right.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It all came to a head when Khrushchev started saying that your grandchildren, and he was pointing at Nixon, will live under communism. At one point, Nixon held his own. He gave tit for tat. And one point he said, Mr. Khrushchev, I honestly think that your grandchildren will live under capitalism. Ironically, that is exactly what has happened today.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Sukhodrev, Former translator for Soviet leaders
Actually, Khrushchev's own son recently received American citizenship, while the Soviet leader's grandchildren who stayed on in Russia live in a country that is far from being communist nowadays.
Khrushchev's initiative to open up the country to the West forty years ago was the first small step towards this change.
But not all can afford what capitalism has brought.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Of course, we do have stores now with everything you ever might need. The goods are available now, but our life has changed and a vast majority of the people simply cannot afford these goods.
SUPER CAPTION: Dina Konstantinovna, visitor
The commemorative exhibit is on show at Moscow's History Museum.

Suffering for soup: The secret of authentic ‘ukha’ - Taste of Russia Ep.3
More films about food and cooking:
Glen learns all about one of Russia’s most ancient dishes, a fish soup called ukha, a popular delicacy dating back to the 16th-17th centuries that can still be found in many Russian restaurants.
To make ukha fit for a tsar, it’s essential to use freshly caught sterlet. The problem is it’s winter, so Oscar takes Glen ice fishing. After catching a magnificent fish, the pair takes refuge from the freezing cold in the warmth of a welcoming home. It happens to belong to Oscar’s relative Sasha, who promises to reveal the key to making authentic ukha.
First, they prepare the broth in a cauldron over a fire. While it’s simmering, Oscar takes Glen for his first taste of a real Russian sauna, or banya. This involves getting whacked with birch branches in a steam room and plunging into an ice-cold pool. After that ordeal, Glen begins to feel a little like a cooked fish himself as he lounges outside in a cauldron-like bath heated on an open fire.
Returning relaxed and refreshed, the final touches are put to the soup, which include a couple of rather surprising ingredients. Will the joy of the taste justify the pain of the cold and the three hours of preparation?

A taste of Moscow's dining scene
(6 Jun 2018) LEADIN:
World Cup football fans will be spoilt for choice when deciding what to eat in Russia.
It's a far cry from the days of beetroot soup and stroganoff - with Moscow a major gourmet destination, showcasing the latest designer food trends.
STORYLINE:
It has some of the best views, and food in Moscow.
White Rabbit restaurant is located on the 16th floor of a building on the brim of the Garden Ring of Moscow.
Through the transparent glass roof, guests can see Moscow's main historic buildings - the Kremlin and skyscrapers such as the Foreign Ministry Building.
The restaurant menu was developed by world-famous chef Vladimir Mukhin and offers a variety of Russian subtle dishes, including cocolardo (cooked coconut pulp), black bread and beluga caviar or ice-cream from lilac and mulberry.
It's a far cry from the stereotypes seen in films showing Soviet-style cafeterias serving stroganoff, beetroot soup or dumplings - all washed down with vodka shots.
The White Rabbit menu is updated regularly, as the restaurant offers seasonal tasting sets.
This month for the World Cup, there is a set of 13 small meals called Russian Evolution, which include sea scallops, cabbage pie, and honey wine. It costs around 9500 rubles (150 U.S. dollars).
Our gastronomic set changes following the season. So even those guests who don't often come to Moscow, for example, twice a year, they are trying different sets, says Anastacia Bulgakova, White Rabbit manager.
The restaurant was featured in Netflix's Chef's Table series and is known for its creativity towards food.
The average bill in the White Rabbit is about 6500 rubles (100 U.S. dollars).
For something more modest, LavkaLavka began with a small online store which offered fresh farm products, including dairy, vegetables, and bread.
Today they have many stores around Moscow and a restaurant not far from the Kremlin.
The idea is similar to serve farm to table products through a variety of modern meals made in a Russian way.
We try to show Russian cuisine from another side. For us, the food is not just food. And we follow this idea in full, says Yuri Sachkov, LavkaLavka manager.
As the restaurant gets full on an average evening, the work in the kitchen is humming.
The menu changes every season and depends on products available from the farmers.
The staff speaks English and is ready to explain each meal as well as provide more information about the farmer who produced it.
And every person who talks to the guest holds some sort of short guided tour into our country by explaining the origin of products, says Yuri Sachkov, LavkaLavka manager.
In our menu, we mention our farmers as well as the country region they work in. We can tell everything about this particular farm and person who holds it. So you know directly who produced this product.
Terraces are on the rise in Moscow, especially for the start of the Summer season. One of them is Strelka Bar located opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour - known for the 'Pussy Riot' band performance - not far from Kremlin.
Strelka Bar is a trendy place popular among young professionals, as well as expats and tourists.
Sitting on its terrace you can enjoy the view on the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and watch the boats passing by along the Moscow river.
The menu of Strelka Bar is mostly European with some Russian meals such as cold kvass soup with vegetables and cooked meat, which can also be served with buttermilk.
