President Oaks Rededicates Oakland California Temple
The Oakland California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been rededicated under the direction of President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency.
President Oaks was accompanied by Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on Sunday for the rededication, which included three sessions. They also spoke to youth at a special devotional Saturday, June 15.
“I’m astonished at the beauty of what has been done in the restoration of the Oakland Temple,” President Oaks said. “What is here is a remarkable house of the Lord in the quality of the architecture, in the quality of all the finishing of the various rooms and in the beauty overall. It is marvelous, and it’s accentuated by extraordinarily beautiful original art that has been added during the restoration.”
More than 123,000 people were able to see inside the 55-year-old temple throughout most of May during a public open house and learn why the Church builds temples. The temple is located at 4770 Lincoln Ave. in Oakland.

The Oakland California Temple was the Church’s 13th temple when President David O. McKay (1873–1970) dedicated it on Nov. 17, 1964. The temple was the second in California (following the Los Angeles California Temple) and currently serves Latter-day Saints from 31 stakes in Northern California. 9 Fastest Deteriorating U.S. Cities (Part 2)
The fastest deteriorating US cities – Part 2. These capitals are shrinking more and more due to the fact that inhabitants are moving to different areas.

Number 9 Memphis, Tennessee
Though Memphis is still a massive city, its numbers are rapidly declining.
Back in the 1950s, there were around 7,780 people per square mile living in the city. That’s a stark difference with the 1,915 citizens per square mile in 2014. What’s worse, when winter comes, the weather often reaches concerning freezing temperatures.
Number 8 Little Rock, Arkansas
On paper, Little Rock should be an ideal place to live. The unemployment rates are as low as 3%, and homes are genuinely affordable. There are, however, a number of growing issues that affects its population.
Number 7 Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore has developed a rather negative reputation over the past few decades. The figure rests at 2,027 versus the state’s average, which is only 500. In one year, almost half of all reported in Maryland came exclusively from Baltimore. In 2017, 41.1% of these offenses originated solely from this city.
Number 6 Antony, New Mexico
Antony in New Mexico has one of the worst rates in all of the United States. It’s no wonder, then, that its citizens are moving to other states and cities in search of better prospects. More than 48% of Las Cruces families are considered to be below the poverty line, which translates to nearly half of its population! Not only that but the cost of living is far higher than the average salary, which means that making ends meet is a genuine struggle for most citizens. The median household income is a mere $24,398, while property values average around $84,300.
Number 5 Oakland, California
It’s undeniable that Oakland beats San Francisco when it comes to property prices. However, those citizens who are looking to save a few dollars on rent might want to think twice before moving to the Bright Side of the Bay. Oakland’s statistics far exceed those in San Francisco and, in fact, most other cities in the US.
Number 4 Atlanta, Georgia
The situation is set to reach new lows, as a tent city is growing in Atlanta’s Midtown region. It’s no wonder people are resorting to such dire measures, with Atlanta’s eviction rates being among the highest in the entire US. Fulton, the central county in Atlanta, sent eviction notices to 22% of its citizens, though that number rises to 40% when it comes to African-American households.
Number 3 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
These chances are also higher than the national average, at 141%. Poverty and unemployment are also on the rise. 26% of all families in the city find themselves below the poverty line and this is far higher than the national average. The income per capita is worse than the median in the rest of Pennsylvania, making this a city with few opportunities for growth.
Number 1 Gary, Indiana
Gary was once nicknamed “The City of the Century”, and it showed great promise for a bright future. However, it didn’t manage to live up to its expectations. Nowadays, it’s been dubbed the most miserable city in America, and for good reasons. Between 2010 and 2018, it lost over 6% of its population, and those who remain must deal with the fact that 36% of households live below the poverty line. Unemployment is also raging, with 7.2% of its population being unable to find or hold down jobs. To compare, the median unemployment ratio on a national level is just 3.9%. Not only is it hard to get employed in Gary, but salaries are also low. The average income per resident is around $15.983 per year, which is almost twice as low as the national standard.

Marriott Oakland City Center California -- A Quality Hotel for Corporate Meetings
Real estate developers paid for my room. I videoed their talk of estates in exclusive resort communities -- gated, guarded, served by crews of landscapers and street cleaners. Mansions in mountain resorts. Homes with swimming pools and docks on the coast of Florida. Sedona, Beverly Hills, Miami.
I could not afford this hotel or the restaurants or the room service.
Tea -- $5.50.
In Kenya, I tried to tell the tea pickers of the prices paid by Americans for the tea the Kenyans grew and harvested for market.
The Kenyans get 14 cents US for a kilo of fresh picked green tea. The raw tea then goes to a processing center, then to Mombasa for the auctions. Brokers sell the tea by the 1,000 kilo lot. From the port of Mombasa, the tea goes to factories in Europe and the United States.
In the Marriott, $5.50 for tea. The people who grew that tea and harvested it, of that $5.50, they got less than 1 US cent.
I don't know the cost of the room. The food? That went on the room charge. The corporation paid.
I videoed this scan of the room with a cellphone.

This is the response of the manager. I suggested they buy their tea direct from Kenyan tea growers / pickers. The Guest Relations Manager responded --
Dear VideoAdventures,
We are constantly evaluating and evolving the way we do business to create a memorable stay for our guests, and with an overwhelming response from our guests that local Oakland cuisine is preferred ....
Did they buy their tea from an Oakland grower?

Jim McGuirt Memorial Service
Tampa, Florida – James William McGuirt III, age 75, of Tampa, Florida passed away on June 16th, 2019 due to a rare form of cancer called Anaplastic Undifferentiated Carcinoma” of the Thyroid. He was born August 24, 1943 in Tampa, Florida to Jim and Betty McGuirt. Brother to his dear sister, Linda Weber.
Jim was married to the love of his life, Patricia Michelle West on February 26, 1966 and sealed for all time and eternity in the Oakland Temple in California in 1978.
Jim was a member of the United States Air Force and served on the United States Air Force Security Services in both Peshawar Pakistan and Misawa Japan, working with the FLIR 9 system. A silent warrior!
Jim loved the outdoors. He loved to fish and loved his pets. Heidi, Tina, Rookie, Poopy, Angel, Cathy, Tabby, Charlie, Thatius Thessalonias McGuirt (Mr. T), Toby Tobias McGuirt, Toby Samantha McGuirt and many more. Animals were attracted to his beautiful spirit.
Jim McGuirt’s greatest love besides his family, was his music. From a young age he discovered his aptitude for music. He excelled in playing percussion. He was in the Plant High School marching band and also in the German Marching Band. During his Sophomore year at Plant High School, they formed the Satellites. A band that played many gigs and many in Tampa knew who the Satellites were and the music they brought to the Tampa Bay area and Central Florida. His music will live on in each of us through his children and friends.
Jim surrounded himself with a positive force that others would gather around him to feel that influence. He was a beacon to us all. Where there was darkness, he was the light. His example of choosing the right is an example to us all.
Jim will be forever remembered as a kind, thoughtful man, free-spirited and a man who loved his family during his earthly probation and continues to do so, even in the eternities.
Truly a wonderful… wonderful man. And as Dan Fogelberg once wrote
I thank you for the music and your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough
And, Papa, I don't think I said I love you near enough.
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul.
I am the living legacy to the leader of the band.
Jim truly was the leader of the band and his legacy lives on.
We love you forever!!!
Survivors include his wife Patricia West McGuirt, son Jimmy McGuirt. Daughters, Michelle McGuirt Wilton and Kelly McGuirt Sherman.
