Orange Speedway 1957
The Orange Speedway in Hillsborough, North Carolina packed in the fans to watch the Grand National Race as the stock cars took to the dirt to battle for a rather small reward beyond the joy of winning.
Buck Baker took home his $3585 winner's purse after averaging a 100 mph race and Speedy Thompson came in second.

Oconeechee Speedway
Land in the late 1800's. The farm was named after the Occoneechee band of the Saponi nation. The landowner raced horses, and built a half-mile horse racing track. Bill France noticed the horse racing track and expansive of open land while piloting his airplane. He built a 0.9 mile dirt track in September,1947, two months before NASCAR was organized. -

Aerial & Ground Views of Historic Occoneechee Speedway - Hillsborough, NC
Aerial and ground level views of Occoneechee Speedway. It was one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open. It closed in 1968 and is the only dirt track remaining from the inaugural 1949 season.
It is located just outside the town of Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Some History of Occaneechee Speedway(Hillsborough, NC)
Occoneechee Speedway was one of the first two Nascar tracks which ran from 1949-1968 in Hillsborough(then Hillsboro) North Carolina. Bill France discovered the land while flying over the area, which was once a Horse racing Track. The Photography is all mine except the vintage pictures, which one of them was taken by Bill France himself I think. Historic Occoneecheee Orange Speedway
A NASCAR dirt racing track that dates back to the 1965 racing period. Today approximately 30 vintage racing cars lined up and made laps around the .9 mile dirt track. Honoree Tim Flocks Fabulous Hudson Hornet 91 was on hand for viewing. The dust rose as it did in it's NASCAR inaugural 1948 season. Today the track is supported through the efforts of the Historic Speedway Group.

Ayr Mount is a property of Classical American Homes Preservation Trust and is operated by Preservation North Carolina.
Ayr Mount is a meticulously restored 1815 plantation home and is exquisitely furnished with Federal Antiques and Decorative Art. Many original Kirkland pieces are also on display. This treasure of natural and cultural history sits on 265 tranquil acres and is located within the Eno River Valley near Hillsborough. It also features Guided House Tours and the one mile Poet's Walk. -
