Here's an excerpt from my website about Minorca:
Hands down, sailing around Minorca, and all the Balearic Islands for that matter, is a fantastic experience. The waters are very clean, the beaches are well groomed, the food is excellent, the people are delightful and there are anchorages to suit everyone. Whether you want a quiet scenic bay with turquoise water or a bustling harbor filled with shops, cafes and historical old towns you’ll get your fix.
There are even party towns if you’re up for a rave or a foam party.
The Balearic Islands are nothing like Italy, Greece or Turkey so I can’t compare and contrast – they are in a league of their own. Many bays having mooring buoys and others allow for free anchoring. And there are loads of marinas if you prefer that scene. It has it all.
As long as you plan ahead and understand the weather conditions you can surely enjoy the islands for free at anchor.
That being my quick introduction to the Balearics, I want to take you for a trip around the island of Minorca. It’s the island located furthest to the east and the first of the Balearics that we toured before completing our circumnavigation of the Mediterranean. We purchased the boat in Palma, Majorca (the next island over) so Minorca marks our last stop before our circle completes.
I’m hoping this article and the accompanying video will create an interest for you to consider a sailing holiday, extended cruising season or even a sightseeing trip to Minorca.
Sailing from Corsica to Minorca – how did we get to Minorca in the first place?
So…since April 2014 (18 months ago as I write) we’ve sailed a total of 6,445 nautical miles. Leaving from Palma, Majorca we sailed to Gibraltar, Algeria, Malta, Sicily, Italy, Greece, Turkey and then back hitting Greece, Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. Eventually the time came to leave Corsica and make our last stop before completing our Mediterranean circumnavigation.
We left the majestic French town of Bonifacio on the island of Corsica at 5am in the morning. (Watch my video on Bonifacio, here: Sailing into Bonifacio on the French Island of Corsica)
The morning sky was still pitch black and only a rubbish truck could be heard murmurings through the town. I heard a quiet cat fight and otherwise, the only noise makers were my husband and I feeling our way around the deck of the boat. The only thing to light our path was the yellow orange town lamps. Looking around at the narrow carved rock exit I was grateful we had some light. Where’s the moon I wondered?
As we slipped our lines and slowly eased out into the cliff-sided canal towards the open Mediterranean, my husband, Simon, headed forward and we whispered our customary goodbye:
“Goodbye Bonifacio. Goodbye Corsica. Thank you so much for having us. We had a great time and appreciate your hospitality!”
When creating a passage plan, Simon aims for us to arrive at our final destination during daylight. Entering a new harbor during the day is so much easier due to obvious reasons (you can see)! On this particular trip, the plan was to leave Bonifacio, Corsica and arrive on the island of Minorca around 7pm the following day but we, instead, arrived at 3pm.
The first stretch of our trip was brilliant as we were hitting speeds of 8.5 knots.

Picnic Patinaire Sant Antoni - S'Agaró
The PATI CATALA is a very sporty multihull (catamaran), looking like a snow sleigh, from Catalonia, and built traditionally from wood (and now also in fiber) in the surroundings of Barcelona. In fact, the Pati Catala is the oldest sports catamaran (multihull) in the World. In the beginning of the twentieth century , the Patin originated from a lifesaving float, to accompany swimmers in the sea, and was driven with a long paddle.
Later, they began to experiment in Catalonia with sails on this rowing multihulls. This explains why they never put rudders on this vessel (the Patin was a rowing boat) and the gear is simple with only a big sail without a boom. The boat has now evolved to a thoroughbred catamaran.
In regattas, one sails the Patin solo. Because of the lacking of a rudder and battens, the position of the weight of the sailor determines the sailing course. This is unique. The Patin a Vela is navigated by the position of the sailor. He (she) has to position his weight without fault to sail the right course.
The Patin weighs less than 100kg and can easily be set ready for sailing by one sailor. The multiple trimming possibilities of the gear make of the Patin a very technical, though easy to sail vessel. This makes sailing on a Patin a fascinating game.
In Spain, it has been mainly represented in the sailing clubs in Catalonia, but now fleets in Andalusia are growing. The Patin now forms one of the most active regatta sailing class. At the present the Patin is a unified sailing class and counts in regional and national big regatta’s. The Patin has the second biggest number of participants (more than 100) after the Optimist class.
Also in Belgium there is a Patin fleet since the end of the sixties, with the biggest concentration in De Haan and Bredene. Since 2000, the class has seen a revival, by renewing the fleet and through initiatives to promote the class by NOSEPASA (North Sea Patin Sailing Association)
Have you noticed yet?
• No rudder
• No keel
• No boom.
Puuure sailing.
The Patin does not leave you untouched!!!
Sailing without a rudder means that the boat is constantly in balance. For small path deviations, the trim of the sail is used. When bigger maneuvers are needed, the sailor has to shift his body weight. The inclination of the mast can be adjusted to the front or to the back during sailing.
The Patin is maintenance-friendly, quick, light and easy to rig up. One can take the boat from the trailer to the water line in only ten minutes! It resists the hard beach life, it is resistant to sand, salt and sun. It is the most appropriate vessel to conquer the breakers!
Moreover, the Patin is a very safe sports catamaran: without boom, the risk of head injuries is much smaller, and, … a Patin is unsinkable!
The Patin is still manufactured according to traditional methods, built out of wood, in Barcelona.
The materials used:
• Okoumé waterproof multiplex symmetrical hulls, with crosswise bulkheads every 50cm, glued in a mold, making the hull extremely rigid and unsinkable.
• The hulls are joined by crossbeams shaped out of light natural wood strengthened with acajou.
• More recently, the Patin are also made of polyester.
Characteristics
• Loa 5.60 m
• Lwl 5.60 m
• Floating 4.70 m
• Width 1.60 m
• Mast height 6.80 m
• Vertical Luff 6.25 m
• Sail area 12.60 m²
• Weight 98 kg

Wilds dolphins - Mediterranean 2016
E : This month, I had the chance to go to the Balearic with my sailboats. And during the crossing of return (Menorca - France), I had enormous chance to see wild dolphins on several occasions ! :D
The two dolphins were the only filmed of their groups to come see us at the bow.
I think that are both bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). What do you think ?
Sorry, the stains on the lens on the first video and lack of stabilization ... :/

A little bit about us...
We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream!
Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? Let's do it He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia.
We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way.
Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is!
As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream.
We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.
Much love

NIGHT Approach.Hitchhiking. Sailing Ocean Fox #57
When a 14 hour journey turns into 22 hours, what a nightmare going upward with two knots of current against us. That make us arriving to a new place in the middle of the night.
Arriving in Saba in the middle of the night made us make a quick decision and go into a very small Harbour. After a couple of hours the Harbour Master asked us to move as they were expecting fishing boats to come.
