Japan Travel Vlog: Odawara
This is our travel to the long awaited Japan, we couldn't be more excited!!!
Shinkansen information:
To travel to Odawara station we pre bought a 21 day Japan Rail Pass from our home country and exchanged it at the station at Narita Airport. This allowed us to travel on all of the Shinkansen trains around Japan and all JR trains.
When travelling on longer journeys, it is suggested that you book your seats and time at the JR centre for the Shinkansen trains, on the day or day before. Otherwise you will have to be seated in the unreserved section at the back or front of the train and they are usually much more louder than other sections.
The Shinkansen trains also have a designated smoking section in both the normal and green cars.
When we arrived at Odawara station, our house was based outside of the Shinkansen and JR lines, thus we had to buy local train tickets. These are priced according to the place you want to go to, increasing in price the further you go. Ours costed 190 yen each way.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did

Japanese HOT POT Feast + Odawara Castle TOUR | Odawara, Japan
It’s no wonder that Japan has been a popular tourist destination for years. Its cities are brimming with centuries of fascinating history and culture and the food scene around the island is unparalleled. The country is so clean and organized, and the natural beauty of the areas outside Tokyo is breathtaking. I hope you’re having as much fun watching this series as I had making it!
My next Japanese adventure took me to Odawara, a town that’s just 35 minutes south of Tokyo via bullet train. It’s a castle town, so I couldn’t wait to see and explore the famous Odawara Castle!
The castle is surrounded by a moat with fish in it. There are also beautiful plum blossom trees on the grounds. The castle has one main gate and the main castle building is set atop a massive stone platform. You have to take a lot of steps to get to the top!
Inside, we climbed to the top, where we had some amazing views of Odawara, lots of snowcapped mountains in the distance, and the Pacific Ocean. There are also binoculars you can use to get even better views for 100 Yen. The 360-degree views are gorgeous!
Then I went back to the bottom to get dressed up like a Samurai! I couldn’t wait to get in the gear. The samurai were feudal lords who ruled Japan for 500 years until 1868. My new friend Haley from Girls Love Travel also dressed up as a samurai!
Then we headed to the workshop at Sororito Odawara to make sachet bags. We could choose from six different natural fragrances and even mix them together if we wanted to. I mixed some frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood, cinnamon, spikenard, and Hedychium together with the mortar and pestle and put it in a silk sachet for my wife. They smelled really amazing together!
Next, it was time to get some oden, or Japanese hot pot, at Oden Honten. I love oden, and Odawara is famous for theirs, so I couldn’t wait to have some!
We started with some appetizers that included fish, green beans, beans and potato, tea, some spicy sauces, and more. The green tea was delicious!
After cleaning my hands with a wet towel, I started with a sardine, which was dry and salty and had a nice glaze on it. Then were the green beans with bonito flakes and sesame. They were a little sweet. There was also celery, cucumber, and red pepper, which was really refreshing. The red beans were also sweet. There were so many contrasting flavors!
Then it was time for the oden! I got mackeral, shrimp cakes, mackeral dumplings, and a white fish, along with mustard, wasabi, and plum miso. The mackeral was great and the wasabi was extremely hot! I liked the fish, which was nice and dense. I tried it with the mustard, which was strong, too!
Next was the white fish, which looked like a huge scallop. It was also dense, but good. The mackeral dumpling had lots of fish, salty flavor. I had it with the wasabi and loved it! The shrimp cake was also really unique. But the best part was the broth! It tasted like a miso soup and warmed me up.
Then was mackeral sushi with seaweed on top. It was gorgeous! The seaweed was very different and fragrant. It was probably the best sushi I’ve ever had. The flavors and textures were outstanding. It seriously blew my mind!
Then we had some wheat noodles, which were amazing! They were so juicy and absorbed the soup they were in. It was like a five-course lunch for 1,800 Yen.
Finally, we ended with some vanilla ice cream with plum jam. It had a nice, orange-like taste.
Then it was time for us to take the Shinkansen bullet train to Tokyo. We checked out some of the things you could buy at the station, including souvenirs, foods like mochis and fish cakes, and even sake!
We rode in Car 11 in Economy Class. It was tough traveling around with my huge luggage, especially up and down the stairs in the stations. I got to the platform just in time to see a bullet train fly by! You have to get on fast because they don’t stop for long.
Car 11 was one of the cars that requires a reservation. This train travels at 350 km per hour and takes only 35 minutes to get to Tokyo. It’s so fast! You have to get off fast! And just like that, I was back in Tokyo!
I hope you enjoyed my adventures in Odawara and my travels back to Tokyo! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment, and subscribe to my channel!

Best way to spend a day in Hakone | Hakone free pass - Round Course
Hakone (箱根) is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, less than one hundred kilometers from Tokyo.
Famous for hot springs, natural beauty and the view across Lake Ashinoko of nearby Mount Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations among Japanese and international tourists looking for a break from Tokyo.
The Hakone Free Pass by Odakyu Railways is a discount pass for exploring Hakone. It provides unlimited use of Odakyu-affiliated buses, trains, boats, cablecars and ropeways in the Hakone area and discounted admission to selected tourist attractions on two or three consecutive days. Optionally, the pass also includes a discounted round trip from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station.
popular and attractive way of visiting Hakone is by circling the region with five different means of transport (train, cablecar, ropeway, boat and bus), using the Hakone Free Pass.
The round course outlined below starts and ends in Hakone-Yumoto and circles the Hakone region in the counter-clockwise direction. Of course, it is also possible to follow the course in the opposite direction or to start and end somewhere different.
If you leave early in the morning, it is possible to completed the Hakone round course in a one day trip from Tokyo. However, we recommend allocating two days and one night to your visit, preferably with a stay at a ryokan with hot spring baths.

Odawara Castle and Town, day trip from Tokyo
Only about 35 minutes from Tokyo station by bullet train, Odawara makes for a great day trip from Tokyo. Beautiful Odawara Castle should be your first stop on your walking tour of the town. We then headed to the beach before walking about to the center of town for a traditional lunch.
Intro to Japan's Odakyu Trains
This is the first of three videos about the Odakyu Electric Railway Company, a private railway network in Japan. (Part 2 in February 2018.) Odakyu's trains connect Tokyo Shinjuku with the resorts and suburbs of Kanagawa Prefecture; including the Enoshima/Kamakura, Odawara/Hakone and Izu peninsula areas.
Odakyu maintains a diverse fleet of railroad equipment, but is famous for their 'Romancecar' express trains. They also operate steep grade climbing mountain trains, including a funicular system, as well as various regular urban commuter trains.
The Odakyu Railway set the world speed record ( 90 mph/145 km/h) for a narrow gauge train in 1957 with the 3000 series SE trainset.
Big Engineer is very familiar with Odakyu's trains, and introduces us to their unique rolling stock in this video.
Train sets shown in this video include:
lots of 1000形, brief glimpses of 2000形, 3000形, 4000形, and 8000形 EMUs, Swiss made funicular HT2, Romancecar 7000形 LSE (Luxury Super Express), Romancecar 30000形 EXE (Excellent Express), Romancecar 50000形 VSE (Vault Super Express), and the Romancecar 60000形 MSE (Multi Super Express).
Odakyu will also be introducing a new 70000形 Romancecar GSE (Graceful Super Express) later in 2018. Based on the modern VSE 50000, the new Romance car GSE 70000 trainset represents a throwback to Odakyu's classic Romance car trains and is expected to replace the beloved LSE 7000.

[Japan by train] Hakone Free Pass • 箱根フリーパス
Get on the train and travel through the beautiful Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, 100 km in the west of Tokyo.
The Hakone Free Pass - provided by Odakyu Railways - allows you to ride (almost) all trains, ropeways and sightseeing boats in the Hakone area.
0:00
We're taking an express service on the Odakyu Odawara Line and leaving the metropolis of Tokyo and his suburban area. After arriving in Odawara we have to change to the Hakone Tozan Railway towards Hakone-Yumoto and further to Gora.
2:24
After changing once again in Yumoto - a place full of hot springs (onsen) - the Tozan Railway pass through a beautiful mountainous landscape with many tunnels and so called switch-backs (zig zag).
The valley becomes more and more narrower until the little train reachs his terminus in Gora where we're taking the Hakone Cable Car up towards Mount Sounzan.
7:23
Without guessing what follows the travel goes on by the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani, the highest point of this trip. Owakudani means Great Boiling Valley, it smells of sulfur and other volcanic gases and you can eat some Kuro-tamago - black hard-boiled eggs, that should prolong the life of 7 years.
On the second section of the Hakone Ropeway we're going down towards Togendai next to Lake Ashi, where our sightseeing boat is waiting for us to depart for Hakonemachi and Moto-Hakone.
Finally you can see the red Torii of the Hakone shrine which is placed on a hill high above the lake.
Slowly the day is coming to an end, the clouds are getting more and the bus for Yumoto is ready to leave.
Until we're finally arriving at Tama-Plaza (→ my residence ;) ) it will already be dark night.

Hakone Travel Guide: Day Trip from Tokyo using the Hakone Free Pass | The Travel Intern
Check out our Hakone Travel Guide:
Being in Hakone felt a lot like exploring Disneyland; think pirate ships, old trains that climb mountains and cable ropeways that hover over misty volcanic valleys. The diversity of landscape almost felt almost as though everything was carefully planned and sectioned out into the different worlds like in Disneyland.
Hakone to many locals is also a favourite weekend getaway; an onsen town with great views of Mount Fuji as well as old hiking paths with lined with 400 year old cedar trees.
If that sounds like your kind of getaway — even if it’s just a quick detour from Tokyo — here’s our guide to a fuss-free day trip in Hakone.
Get your Hakone Free Pass:
0:14 - Hakone Jinjo Shrine
0:19 - Hakone Shrine & Torri of Peace
One of the most iconic symbols of Hakone is the grand Torii gate that sits on the edge of Lake Ashinoko. Probably more famous than the shrine itself as it takes a bit of climbing to get to.
0:23 - Hakone Tozan Bus
0:26 - hakone Checkpoint
0:35 - Ancient Cedar Avenue
One of the best preserved parts of old Hakone. A 500m path lined with tall cedar trees used during the Edo period where travellers mainly walked on foot between Tokyo and Kyoto.
0:45 - Hakone Sightseeing Cruise
0:49 - Lake Ashinoko
Heart of Hakone and one of the 5 famous lakes in the Fuji-izu region. You might even see Mount Fuji on a clear day.
0:54 - Hakone Ropeway
Scenic ropeway towards Owakudani
1:00 - Owakudani
Also known as the Valley of Hell with the volcanic gasses and ponds created during the eruption of Mount Hakone.
1:13 - Hakone Tozan Cable Car
1:18 - Odawara Castle
15th century castle — a famous spot for its cherry blossoms in late March to April.

Odawara, Japan in June, a quick tour! - 6月中に小田原を訪問
A quick tour of Odawara (小田原市) in Japan..
A friend of mine from Switzerland came to visit me in Odawara, a city which is just over an hour away by the bullet train from Tokyo and near to Hakone.
We went to Odawara Castle (小田原城), which has various events around the year. The castle was rebuilt in the 1960's, but it features a museum inside with many cool Samurai related artifacts and an observatory and a souvenir shop. The entry into the castle for myself at the time was 410円, which is worth the price.
Afterwards we went to Seikantei (清閑亭), which is a beautiful Japanese historical villa.
We then had melon soda ice cream, before ending the mini tour at the pebbly beach of Odawara.
