World's LONGEST Tunnel System (Odessa Catacombs)
August 11, 2017 / VLOG NO. 73 – We set off to explore the world's longest tunnel system, the Odessa Catacombs in Ukraine. It's insane how large this system of labyrinths is—consisting of 3,000 km of tunnels, the Odessa Catacombs are longer than both the Rome and Paris Catacombs combined!!! They were built in the 19th century when Odessa was still being built, and used during WWII by the Soviet partisans against Nazi invaders.

Odessa catacombs, Odessa, Ukraine.
In the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, a lot of architectural monuments and buildings were constructed in Odessa. The building materials, especially limestone, were used by necessity at that time. However, due to the frequent drawdowns of some buildings, a ban on the extraction of stone within the boundaries of some streets was imposed. Thus, the whole system of the labyrinths was created not only under the city but also outside its borders. The mazes included various bunkers, caves and long tunnels, which served as hideouts for Soviet soldiers and partisans during the Second World War.
Nowadays, these underground passages are the most famous and longest in the world. Its length is estimated up to 1,553 miles (2,500 km) of labyrinths and caves connected to each other. Meanwhile, the length of the Roman and Parisian ones are 186 miles (300 km) and 310 miles (500 km), respectively. The layers of the catacombs go down to a depth of 60 meters (196 feet) below sea level.
Exploring the WILD CATACOMBS OF ODESSA | Longest tunnel system in the world
A travel to Odessa, Ukraine to chill out and rejuvenate from Medical school stress led to me exploring the Odessa catacombs as per my ever-growing wanderlust. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Built in the 19th century, the catacombs are a labyrinth-like network of tunnels located under the City of Odessa. The approximate topography of the Odessa underground labyrinth is unknown and so, the catacombs have not been fully mapped. It is one of the world’s largest labyrinth running up to 2,500 kilometers. How cool, right?!
Anyway, only a part of the catacombs is open to the public within the “Museum of Partisan Glory.” As of 2012, there are more than 1000 known entrances to the tunnels. Other caves attract the extremists- tourists who still explore despite the dangers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Do journey with me on this Vlog as I explore the Odessa catacombs, and trust me it gets as exciting an adventure can get. Add up to your travel wishlist, you’re welcome.????

EXPLORING ODESSA CATACOMBS || UKRAINE
Hi guys!
While on a holiday in Ukraine a few months ago, we took a day trip to Odessa (you can see some of the clips from there in my previous video). One of the things on my bucket list was to visit the famous Odessa catacombs. I'm so glad we did it because it was definitely one of the best experiences of my life!
You're only allowed to visit the catacombs with a guide because it's so easy to get lost in there. Our tour lasted for 2,5 hours!
One of the highlights of the tour was when we all had to switch off our flashlights and stand quietly in complete darkness. That was scary and fascinating at the same time. What made it scary was trying to imagine what it would feel like to get lost in the catacombs without any light sources. It would be impossible to find a way out since it's literally so dark that you can't even see your own hand that's just a few centimeters away from your face.
Anyway, I would definitely recommend visiting any catacombs if you ever get the chance.

Episode 1: Creepy Stories and the Odessa Catacombs
Skip to 25:42 for the Odessa Caracombs.
Welcome to episode one of our currently unnamed podcast. In this video we cover a few creepy and unsettling stories, and the Odessa Catacombs in the Ukraine. I thought that covering a few true creepy stories would be a good way to kick off the podcast, who doesn't like a good unexplained mystery?
And as we said in the begining, any constructive criticism is welcome (and needed).

LOST AND ALONE IN THE PARIS CATACOMBS
Right then. This one didn't really go to plan. On my last few days in Paris, I decided it would only be right if I made a trip to the Paris Catacombs. So, after hitting up the legal tour, I planned a trip to the less legal ones, but ended up going deeper in than I'd planned. Lost for almost 3 hours, it didn't go at all as planned, but luckily I didn't end up missing.
History: The catacombs started life as a huge limestone mine, but in the latter half of the 18th century, in 1786, these quarries were consecrated, turning them into the Paris Catacombs . This happened when grave sites began to become too overpopulated. All the bones from the Les Innocents Cemetery were transferred to the catacombs over the space of 2 years due to them becoming too full. However over the following decades, the bones of the dead were removed from cemeteries around Paris for reburial in the catacombs, before the burying of the newly dead in the catacombs began after the French Revolution. There are roughly 6 million people buried under there now, in the 200 mile long network of tunnels. Anyway, enjoy the vid guys...

Top 10 Creepy Images Captured In Catacombs - Creepy images - Scary images
15 Creepy Images Captured In Catacombs.
10. Small Tunnel Where A Camera Was Found.
The image above is a still taken from a camera that was found in the Paris Catacombs. Some explorers were walking around when they stumbled upon a camera someone had left behind. When they started reviewing the footage, they found that the person’s last footage was him running away with his breathing speeding up. He eventually dropped the camera, and in the footage, you can hear his footsteps running away.
9. When The Catacombs Were Being Built.
In the old photograph you can see above, a man is pulling what looks to be a large container of bones. What he’s doing is exactly that. This picture was taken during the construction of the Paris catacombs when people started moving bodies from the graveyards to the tunnels below. Not every single body was moved in the nicest of ways. They were often just tossed in containers and stored on shelves somewhere down under.
8. A Shadow Person In The Catacomb Halls?
Although the catacombs are filled with dead bodies, not many people really believe them to be haunted. Most who believe in ghosts think that the souls stay where the people died rather than where their bodies rest. It’s all fiction anyway, so you can believe whatever you want and twist your thoughts to fit your logic. The people who captured the photograph above definitely believe that they saw what they believe to be a shadow person in the halls of the Paris Catacombs.
7. Perfectly Preserved Child.
The little girl in the glass casket in the photograph above is Rosalia Lombardo. She was just two years old when she died of pneumonia. Her father was so grief-stricken that he had her taken to an expert taxidermist who stated he would do his best to preserve her body. He succeeded, and one hundred years later, barely any sign of decomposition is visible.
6. A Tourist Who Got Lost And Died.
There are catacombs in Ukraine that aren’t as terrifying as the others on the list. These catacombs aren’t stuffed with bodies and skeletons like the ones in Paris or Sicily. Instead, they still exist from a time when mining ruled the city. They later turned into an intricate system of tunnels for criminals to use to do their business.
5. Child Mummies.
The child in the photo above looks like a statue. Everything about it looks like it was carved in stone. Unfortunately, it’s actually a real child that was mummified and enclosed in a glass casket. These remains are on display in the catacombs of Italy in a special children’s display next to Rosalia’s coffin. Whenever a child dies, it’s always a tragedy. It makes sense that the parents of these children would choose to preserve the child. Decades later, long after the child’s family dies out, we’re left with nothing other than a tragic reminder of the child’s death.
4. The Wealthiest On Display.
Once the cemeteries were getting too filled in Sicily, they decided to start stacking bodies underground and putting them on display. It was a new way to mourn the loss without taking up all the space. These catacombs started filling up as well, however, so it became harder to get bodies in. You either had to be of a high religious status or just really wealthy.
3. All Wrapped Up.
We understand respecting and honoring those that have died, but how can we not be terrified when we see someone like the guy in the photograph above? He doesn’t look like he was making the happiest of faces in his final moments. It also looks as though he’s wearing a straitjacket.
2. A Baby Skeleton Inside Its Mother’s.
The photograph above found inside the Paris catacombs is absolutely tragic. It’s a little hard to tell, but if you look at the pelvic bones of the female skeleton in the picture above, you can see what looks to be the skeleton of a child. This poor baby didn’t even get a chance and lived and died inside its mother’s womb. Since the bodies were moved from one place to the next when the Paris catacombs were being constructed, it’s interesting to discover that those who moved them respected these two skeletons enough to keep the mother with her baby.
1. Eternally Resting.
If you had to pick one position to be in for all eternity, it’d be laying down, right? Who would want to stand or sit forever? The best place in the world is laying down in your own bed, so a similar situation for the afterlife is ideal — unless, of course, you’re these guys taken from catacombs in the Czech Republic. Sure, they’ll be resting for all of eternity — but with bricks as pillows?
The Odessa Catacombs
The Odessa Catacombs are a network of tunnels that consist of three levels, stretching out under the city and surrounding region of Odessa. The first underground stone mines started to appear in the 19th century, while vigorous construction took place in Odessa. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, stone mining was banned within the central part of Odessa. During World War II the catacombs served as hiding places for Soviet partisans, in particular the squad of V.A. Molodtsev.

As the Ukrainian military launches an offensive on the rebel-held town of Sloviansk, members of the self-proclaimed state of Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) are continuing a campaign of government building takeovers.
On Sunday, DPR protesters were able to take the military prosecutor's office and a local council building. VICE News followed the group as members burned the Ukrainian flag and arrested a suspected provocateur. The man was seen being bundled into a car while covered in blood, his destination unknown.
DPR protesters headed to a government debt collection office on Monday and delivered an ultimatum to freeze the discovery of listed debts by PrivatBank — Ukraine's largest bank — in Donetsk. The bank has stopped operating in the Donetsk region, citing alleged intimidation of its staff. This has led to long lines outside branches as people desperately try to withdraw money.
When approached by the protesters, the manager of the office very calmly said he would get back to them in the next few days — at which point the men, some with guns, withdrew.
