Lyndhurst Mansion and Other Castles of New York
When you think castle you probably think medieval times or maybe you think Belvedere Castle in Central Park. But a lot of majestic castles are scattered throughout New York State.
North of New York City is Bannerman Castle. Its namesake was Irishman Francis Bannerman, who owned an ammunitions company in Brooklyn. He bought the island in 1901 and had the castle built to store military surplus. The state purchased the island in 1967. After a fire destroyed most of the castle in 1969, it became off-limits to the public. (The island eventually became part of Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve.)
In the Great Lakes region, you'll find Boldt Castle. George Boldt, a former manager of the Waldorf-Astoria, commissioned this castle in 1900. It was once one of the largest private homes in the United States. Today, it is a tourist attraction.
Hundreds of years ago, a castle was a structure that had to be fortified from attack. But after arriving at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, I learned that times have changed.
Lyndhurst was built in 1838. It was designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis, the same man who designed Federal Hall on Wall Street.
The grand entryway is just a hint of what is inside. One of the first rooms you enter is a parlor where guests gathered before dinner. This was a room designed for conversation.
On our way to the paintings gallery, we passed a bathroom and the duchess's room complete with vintage Louis Vuitton trunk. The gallery made it clear that owner Jay Gould loved collecting fine art.
Almost 200 years after the gothic revival home was built, Lyndhurst remains a crown jewel on the shore of the Hudson River.

Oheka Castle
Oheka Castle, also known as the Otto Kahn Estate, is located on the North Shore of Long Island, in Huntington, New York. It was the country home of investment financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn and his family. The name Oheka is an acronym of its original owner's name Otto Hermann Kahn, and Kahn also used the name for his yacht Oheka II and his ocean-front Villa 'Okeha' in Palm Beach, Florida. The mansion was built by Kahn between 1914 and 1919, and is the second largest private home in the United States, comprising 127 rooms and over 109,000 square feet, as originally configured.
The castle is currently a historic hotel with 32 guest rooms and suites on the upper floors of the mansion, a popular wedding venue for socialites, celebrities, and dignitaries, and the backdrop to many photo shoots and Hollywood films. The estate also offers tours of the estate and gardens.

Hempstead House
Hempstead House, or the Gould-Guggenheim Estate, is a large estate located in Sands Point, New York The grounds contain two castle-like buildings, Hempstead House, the main house, and a smaller house, known as Castle Gould. Hempstead House in its prime was regarded as one of the most lavish estates to occupy the Gold Coast (North Shore (Long Island)):Howard Gould, son of railroad tycoon Jay Gould, began construction of the estate after purchasing the land in 1900. Initially, the plan was to build a castle that was to be a replica of Kilkenny Castle. Castle Gould, as it came to be called, was intended to be used as the main house. However, the Goulds did not like the castle so they decided to create another house on the estate which would serve as the main dwelling.
After the completion of this house in 1912, the Goulds sold the estate to Daniel Guggenheim. Upon buying the estate, the name of the main house was changed to Hempstead House (the limestone stables and the servants quarters are, today, still referred to as Castle Gould). In 1917, the Guggenheims donated the estate to the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences. Soon after acquiring the estate, the institute sold it to the U.S. Navy who held it from 1946-1967. The U.S. government declared the estate as surplus and eventually gave the deed of the property to Nassau County, New York in 1971.

'Haunted' New York mansion used for high- end fashion shoots on sale for $2.3million

Rumors have long claimed it to be haunted, and it is one of the most-photographed houses in the U.S., consistently booked for fashion shoots and features for the likes of Vogue, Elle, W and New York Magazine.
Now the Staten Island mansion once owned by Gustav A. Mayer — the 19th century inventor who sold his sugar cookie recipe to Nabisco for their 'Nilla' wafers - has been listed for sale at $2.3 million.
Mayer, who died in 1918, left the home to his two daughters, Paula and Emilie, who never married and both lived until they were over 100-years-old, refusing to leave two certain rooms of the 10-bedroom house.
In this regard, the manor has become ideal for photoshoots, providing a setting that is rustic and dilapidated but also trapped-in-time, with many of the rooms untouched for decades.
Sands Point Preserve - Castle Gould #3
Howard Gould and his wife, actress Katherine Clemmons, purchased the estate property in 1900 and 1901; Castle Gould was the first of four mansions built here, designed by architect Augustus N. Allen in 1902, modeled after Ireland’s Kilkenny Castle. Completed in 1904, this impressive 100,000-square-foot limestone building was intended to be the main residence on the estate, but, when Katherine decided that it did not suit her, Howard proceeded to build Hempstead House. Castle Gould then served as the stable, carriage house, and servants’ quarters and now houses the Visitor Center, Great Hall, and a 7,000-square-foot New York State-certified sound stage – a.k.a. The Black Box.
