Of the many hiking trails on Okinawa this is one of my favorites. The trailhead is about 2 km inland from National Route 58 along the island's western coast on the East China Sea. From there it's approximately 1.7 km along the forest paths, trails, stairs and bridges to get to the waterfall. The sound of the forest is amazing! At one point, maybe half-way of so along the trail we encountered a suspension bridge that was about 80 feet above the riverbed below. A very nice scene. Come on along - let's do this!

While gallivanting around March 2, 2017 we stopped in at the Yuiyui Kunigami michi no eki (road station) and picked up a bunch of souvenir-type stuff and lots (and lots) of chinsuko! After that we stepped out of the store and to our delight found the Waya Soba Shop. It was DyLon's first taste of Okinawa-made yakisoba in 27 years! Yeah, he thought it was pretty durned tasty!

Location: roadside station in Kunigami, Kunigami district, Okinawa prefecture, Japan
Yui Yui Kunigami is a roadside rest area located on National Highway 58 in Okuma, Kunigami Village, Kunigami District. The facilities include shops selling local specialty products such as Karagi Tea, restaurants and cafés serving food made from local ingredients, retail outlets selling Kunigami-grown vegetables, a restaurant serving Kunigami’s famous local pork (and wild boar) specialty dishes, a fish paste store selling fish paste made from only the freshest fish, a flower shop, and a tourist information office. There is also a set of children’s play equipment outdoors.

April 14, 2016 – After another great businessman’s breakfast at the Toyoko Inn, I had to pack up. Looking out da window, it was raining so I said oh well, looks like I gotta postpone da shopping until next trip. OR, did I say “YIPEE, no need go shopping today!”. Well, today is moving day and I’ll be checking in to a hotel in Kitanakagusuku, a place about 40-minute drive from Naha. Cousins M, J & H picked me up at 9 a.m. and guess what! Da sun went come out! So, I guess I should go shopping this morning. I was looking for dark clouds but never had any so I told cousins M, J, & H, OK den let’s go HE-LE on straight to da place called Mija to pick up some Okinawa hotaru beads. Well, da guy we made arrangements with yesterday wasn’t there so I left an order for beads and told them we’ll check back later. So then, we went walk down 3 blocks and found the Junkudo book store but had to wait 15 minutes because we got there too early. Good thing my cousins were there because I was looking for Okinawan childrens’ books and had a hard time explaining exactly what I wanted. I told them how about books for 4, 5 to 6 years old. Wow, I looked at those books and I couldn’t read most of it. Anyways, with the clerk’s help I picked up 5 books. UUUUUUUUUUU da expensive. Two of the books had a child’s story written in Japanese and in Okinawan languages plus English. Others had different stories in Japanese and English. Whatevers. AND, guess what, they have a biiiiiig 100-yen DAISO on the 4th floor of that book store. Sorry, no more time to look at DAISO this trip.
So we went back to the bead store and got our beads. Didn’t realize it was duty/tax free for the amount we bought so I was way under budget but then my slow brain didn’t think of adding more beads because we saved sooooo much money with no duty/tax. Next time!
Drove up to Kitanakagusuku, dropped off my luggage and my shopping bags at the Costa Vista hotel high on the hills, about 5 minutes from cousin M’s house. Too early to check so we picked up Aunt “I” and we went to lunch at this place called “Daikon no Hana”. ONO stuffs; I ate too much! Then we went to visit the ruins of Nakagusuku Castle, a World Heritage site. This castle ruins is considered the best of the 300 or so castle ruins in Okinawan prefecure. It is a big place, lots of steep walkways, lined with uneven coral blocks so one needs to be careful and not trip.
Still too early for checking in so we went to the Aeon center for some refreshments. Then I finally completed signing da forms and officially checked in.
Met cousins M & J and aunt “I” for dinner at the Pub Lounge Emerald. We ordered family style so we could taste a bit of a lot of dishes. ONO, ONO, ONO!
