The Mayberry Courthouse in Mt Airy
Most of my videos on The Andy Griffith Show film locations are from Hollywood, Culver City, and Franklin Canyon in the Los Angeles Area. The fact that absolutely nothing still exist from the film sites from the show, I thought if might be a treat to post this video on a replica of the interior of the Mayberry Courthouse. This is of course in Mt. Airy, NC. It is the hometown of Andy Griffith. The town is proud of its connection with Andy and there are several attractions within the town for Mayberry Fans to see when they visit. This Courthouse replica is pretty close, close enough to stir the imagination when one visits. Hope you like it.

This building was eventually used for(CPS) Child Protective Services and Nurses Housing before that. Gastonia, NC, was the center of the state's efforts to help those afflicted with polio with the location of the North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital. The hospital was Founded in 1921 and closed in 1979 Later used for Child Protective Services Closed in 2008. Left behind are the decaying remains of a once thriving Childrens Hospital. The old N.C. Orthopedic Hospital, which was home to disabled children from across the state from 1921 until it closed in 1979.
One of those children would grow up to become my wife, Linda Johnston. She says that she and the other kids had a very rigid schedule, rising at 6a.m. for baths and breakfast, followed by extensive therapy for the rest of the day. They had strict visiting policies, allowing visits only on Wednesdays and Sundays – and then, only adults were allowed to visit.
Family members also had the option of signing the patients out for the weekend.
Discipline was severe, too, and many practices would not be tolerated today. Linda says one discipline tactic they used was placing the kids in the “dog house,” a dark supply closet, for the night.
The hospital was started in 1921, after local businessman Roy Babington read a newspaper article about a widowed woman whose disabled child was turned away from an orphanage because the state lacked a facility equipped to care for disabled children. He successfully pushed for a facility, and today a monument still stands on the property.
