California sea lions on the docks at Newport OR
We stopped for lunch down by the docks in Newport, OR, and we could hear the sea lions a long way off. These are male California sea lions (Zalophus Californianus) that spend August through June in the area around Newport, moving to California waters to mate in the summer.

Correction at 11:01 - The Gateway Arch was built between 1963-1965. It was the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial that hosts the arch that was established in 1935. Thanks to Michael Elledge for pointing out this error.

Deepest Hole in The Ocean! (Whirlpool) Saltstraumen
The Saltstraumen has the strongest tidal current in the world. Up to 400,000,000 cubic metres (520,000,000 cu yd) of seawater forces its way through a 3-kilometre (1.9 mi) long and 150-metre (490 ft) wide strait every six hours, with water speeds reaching 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph). Vortices known as whirlpools or maelstroms up to 10 metres (33 ft) in diameter and 5 metres (16 ft) in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest. The Saltstraumen has existed for about two to three thousand years. Before that, the area was different due to post-glacial rebound. The current is created when the tide tries to fill the Skjerstadfjorden. The height difference between the sea level and the fjord inside can be up to 1 metre (3 ft 3 in). When the current turns, there is a period when the strait is navigable.
Raw video: 'Dragon' crash survivor says final goodbyes
What would your last words be to your loved ones? In touching videos taken on his cellphone, Kevin Diepenbrock, 41, originally from Greenville, Texas, says his final goodbyes to his family after he and another motorcyclist crashed on a stretch of U.S. Highway 129 known as The Dragon on Oct. 15, 2016, and tumbled down a rocky embankment. Diepenbrock, who suffered two punctured lungs, 17 breaks in 12 ribs, and multiple spinal fractures, was found more than 24 hours after the crash. The other motorcyclist, Phillip Polito, 29, of Perryville, Mo., died. (Video courtesy of Kevin Diepenbrock)

Nat Museum Speaker Series Ship Wrecks Oct 2014 Della Scott Ireton
Dr. Della Scott Ireton
Museums in the Sea: Florida's Underwater Archaeological Preserves
Clues to Florida’s maritime history are scattered along the state’s coasts, bays, and rivers in the form of shipwrecks relating to waterborne exploration, commerce, and warfare. This lecture features Florida’s Museums in the Sea, historic shipwrecks that have been interpreted for divers and snorkelers as a way to educate citizens and visitors about the real treasure of Florida’s shipwrecks – their history.
Dr Della Scott-Ireton graduated from the University of West Florida with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and a Master's degree in Historical Archaeology. She also has a Master's in International Relations from Troy University, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Florida State University. Della is certified as a Scuba Instructor with the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). She worked with the Pensacola Shipwreck Survey, West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc., Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research, and the government of the Cayman Islands before joining the Florida Public Archaeology Network (flpublicarchaeology.org) where she serves as Associate Director. Della is a board member of the Society for Historical Archaeology, a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists, and is appointed to the Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee. Della's research interests include public interpretation of maritime cultural heritage, both on land and under water, and training and engaging avocationals in archaeological methods and practices.

History of the Jews in the United States
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.

SUMMARY
=======
The history of the Jews in the United States has been part of the American national fabric since colonial times. Until the 1830s, the Jewish community of Charleston, South Carolina, was the largest in North America. In the late 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s, many Jewish immigrants left from various nations to enter the U.S. as part of the general rise of immigration movements. For example, many German Jews arrived in the middle of the 19th century, established clothing stores in towns across the country, formed Reform synagogues, and were active in banking in New York. Immigration of Eastern Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews, in 1880–1914, brought a large, poor, traditional element to New York City. They were Orthodox or Conservative in religion. They founded the Zionist movement in the United States, and were active supporters of the Socialist party and labor unions. Economically, they concentrated in the garment industry.
Refugees arrived from diaspora communities in Europe after World War II and, after 1970, from the Soviet Union. Politically, American Jews have been especially active as part of the liberal New Deal coalition of the Democratic Party since the 1930s, although recently there is a conservative Republican element among the Orthodox. They have displayed high education levels, and high rates of upward social mobility. The Jewish communities in small towns have dwindled, as the population concentrated in large metropolitan areas.
In the 1940s, Jews comprised 3.7% of the national population. Today, at about 6.5 million, the population is 2% of the national total—and shrinking as a result of smaller family sizes and interfaith marriages resulting in nonobservance. The largest population centers are the metropolitan areas of New York (2.1 million in 2000), Los Angeles (668,000), Miami (331,000), Philadelphia (285,000), Chicago (265,000) and Boston (254,000).
