Halfeti - Şanlıurfa
Halfeti is a small farming district on the east bank of the river Euphrates in Şanlıurfa Province in Turkey, 120 km from the city of Şanlıurfa. Population (2000 census) 33,467 (of which 2,608 were in the town of Halfeti, the majority being in the surrounding villages). Most of the villages were submerged in the 1990s under the waters behind the dam on the Euphrates at Birecik. The town was therefore removed to the village of Karaotlak, the building of the new town is now complete.
History
The Assyrian King Shalmaneser III (855 BC) established a settlement here named Shitamrat. The town was subsequently settled by a number of civilisations and known as Urima, Qal'a Rhomayta or Hesna d-Romaye (in Aramaic), to the Byzantine Greeks it was known as Romaion Koyla (Ρωμαίων Κούλα - roman castle -), and the Arab conquerors mutated this name to Qal'at al-Rum.
The town was fortified and was besieged by the Mameluks in 1280, who conquer the outlying Christian villages but were unable to break into the fortress, which eventually fell to Sultan al-Ashraf in 1290. The Mameluks repaired the city walls and renamed the place Qal'at al-Muslimin although the names Urumgala and Rumkale persisted. The town was brought under Ottoman rule by Selim I.Halfeti has been a part of Turkey as of 1923.
Post-Dam Settlement
As part of the Southeastern Anatolia Project, aka GAP, several dams were constructed in the area and surrounding regions as part of a larger agricultural and economic initiative by the Turkish Government. The town of Halfeti was among those settlements, ancient and contemporary, that would remain under the rising water levels of the local dams and rivers following the execution of the GAP.Until the area was flooded in 1999, the people lived from fishing in the Euphrates and farming on the riverbank, especially growing peanuts and the area's famous black roses. Then the waters came and 'new' Halfeti was built. Some buildings, including the jail, were pulled down and rebuilt in the new town. The old town of Halfeti is only partially submerged and is beginning to attract visitors, especially those who hire a ferry to visit the ruins of the nearby fortress of Rumkale (Qal'at ar-Rum). The countryside is also attractive, although the green valley of the past is now underwater.Opposite Halfeti stood the village of Kale Meydanı, which was also submerged, but the large landowners house was taken and reconstructed in the grounds of Harran University.Wikipedia

Crazy Pinay in Halfeti Urfa Turkey - Halfeti Boat Cruise - Tour Guide Turkey
Journey of Anafe has taken me to this wonderful part of Turkey. As part of my series Tour Guide Turkey i will bring to you the best sites and sounds of Turkey. It is a pleasure to visit and see these places and to be able to bring them to you guys in Tour Guide Turkey. It was beautiful and i feel blessed to have had the chance to see such place with its rich culture and history. Halfeti is a district of Sanliurfa province. It's one of the most unusual sites in Turkey because the old town is mostly submerged into the water because of a dam construction. Even though part of Halfeti is lost underwater, it has a very rich cultural heritage and beauties, like a hidden paradise. Halfeti has also a special species of rose, the Black Rose which also known as the Crying Arabian Girl rose. It blossoms in Spring and Autumn.
Today Halfeti is divided into two sections: Old town and new town. The old town, farmers' homes, trees, mosque etc remained under water when Birecik Dam was completed on Euphrates river in 2000. So, the residents of Halfeti had to build and move to the new town about 15 kilometers away, called as New Halfeti. Meanwhile the submerged - original - town of Halfeti is called today as Old Halfeti.
The foundation of the city dates back to 9th century BC, when it was settled by the Assyrians with the name of Sitamrat. During the Roman period there was a settlement here by the name of Akamai, then changed into Koyla. After the Romans, the Sassanians, Arabs, Umayyads and Abbasids ruled the area between 6th-8th centuries AD. In the 11th century Seljuks and then in the 16th century Ottomans captured the territory.

This Rare Black Rose Can Only Be Found in Turkey
The Turkish Halfeti Rose only grows in exceptionally small numbers in the village of Halfeti, Turkey.
Red roses are probably the most cliched romantic gift ever. Have you ever considered a black rose?
There aren't too many females who will deny the extremely rare Turkish rose makes an exotic gift, even if it will die after a week or so. The roses appear to be completely black, with the signature green stem.
Called the Turkish Halfeti Rose, they only grow in exceptionally small numbers in the village of Halfeti, Turkey. They won't flourish anywhere else in the entire world because it's the river Euphrates that provides the ideal soil and growing conditions for the rose.
Those perfect natural circumstances are due to the pH levels of groundwater in the local area. Adding to the undeniably cool effect of the rose, the black color is only visible during the summer months. In every other season the roses are an exceptionally deep crimson red tint.
Although the rose is unique, the Turks associate it both with passion as well as death and foreboding, perhaps due to the insanely dark color.
What do you think about the black rose?

Southeast Turkey with Mick and Trudie. Part 1 Mardin
Mardin, Southeast Turkey. Exploring southeast Turkey with Mick and Trudie Scarsbrook (Mick Amca), Part 1 of a 5 part series
Mardin is a place in South Eastern Turkey close to the Turkish/Syrian border.
It’s part of Turkey that both myself and Trudie have never explored before.
We made the decision to visit this area and include Hasankeyf, Midyat, Nemrut Dag (Nemrut mountain) near Adiyiman, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa (Urfa), Gobeklitepe and to help get rid of the stigma attached that can put off western tourists visiting because of its close proximity to the Syrian border.
Day 3 into our tour and whilst in Mardin news broke out that American troops were pulling out of Syria and Turkey was going to make a safe zone for the Syrian refugees along the Syrian border.
Ours families back in the UK were seeing the news on TV of towns being shelled on the border and were concerned and worried for our safety!
We watched the news in our hotel room on the Turkish TV and it also was showing shelling of houses.
At this point I put out a short film expressing we were changing our travel plans and would head North away from the border.
This actually sparked a lot of comments and one lady in particular wrote “you have gone to the area to aim at showing the reality that it is not how people see it on the news. Surely by heading North you will just be the ones adding to the stigma and put visitors off coming to the area”!
This ladies comment was absolutely right. So we chose not to listen to the news and actually listen to the people who were living in the area itself.
We are so glad we continued our journey, and not once did we feel in danger from anything or anyone.
Please watch and enjoy our five part series to the amazing, Southeast Turkey.

In 2013 the town became a member of Citta' Slow, or Slow City, because of its serenity. Citta' Slow is an international title given to small towns with a population less than 50 thousand and it's focused on local development for improving traditions, cuisine, nature and other characteristics to help local governments.
The town can be visited by small boats that can be hired along the shore. The most dramatic views of the Old Halfeti when you sail around on the boat are semi-submerged houses made of stone, trees, mosque minarets, remnants of the old castle and palace, and other historical monuments that can be seen over and under the water. You can also enjoy unique views from the 135-meter long suspension bridge over Halfeti Dam Lake.
Around the lake there are small restaurants in which you can taste the local cuisine, especially the Halfeti kebab with eggplants or the Sabut fish grill. You can also enjoy a Turkish tea or coffee in the tea-gardens around the village or at the 200-years-old Kanneci mansion. Some interesting villages to visit in Halfeti are Savasan (or Batikkoy) village, Rumkale, and Beresul. Nearby Halfeti you can also pay a visit to Gaziantep city and Zeugma site.
GAZIANTEP, HALFETI, ZEUGMA MOSAICS TRAVEL VLOG
This was my first little effort making a short travel vlog about our trip from Antalya to Gaziantep. We visited the largest and possibly the best Roman mosaic museum in the world - the Zeugma Mosaic Museum. From there we travelled to the 'mighty' Euphrates river to see 800BC Rum castle and the underwater city of Halfeti. We got to interview some folks along the way, including the dedicated owner of the Ibis bird sanctuary in Bilecik and some of the locals in Halfeti! The people's kindness and generosity was unsurpassed and the food was incredible. We filmed on a GoPro and given it was our first time making a short travel log, we learnt a lot for next time in terms of improving sound quality and post editing techniques. Pls subscribe if you like it and stay tuned for part 2 of our trip to Sanliurfa, Gobekli Tepe and the ancient city of Harran, 10ks from the Syrian border. Peace.

Erdogan builds thousands of dams, why? - In Turkey
The Turkish economy is growing fast, too fast. But how does a country grow without oil, without gas? More than two thousand dams are currently under construction to match the need for energy. Green energy, though. But the areas where these dams are being built are paying a high price. We travel to a drowned village that disappeared under the water of a dam: only the minaret is left to see. How does a community deal with this loss? And why does the government continue to plan new dams, even though studies show that the dams do not produce nearly as much energy as promised. Does it have anything to do with the neighboring countries such as Iraq and Syria, which are dependent on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers originating in Turkey and that are now fully built with dams?
Original title: The drowned village
In this seven-part series Bram Vermeulen travels through Turkey - From Istanbul to the sparsely populated mountains in the east; from the closed borders of Armenia to the open southern borders shared with neighboring Arab countries - observing the rapid changes in a country that has a renewed fresh confidence.
In Turkey, was awarded the Special Award Discourse and Politics at the Erasmus EuroMedia Awards 2011 in Vienna.
