ROAD TRIP TO KOTOR MONTENEGRO (IT WAS CRAZY!) | 17-09-2019

We decided to hire a car and drive from Cavtat in Croatia to Kotor Montenegro. It turned out to be an adventure!!

The cost of car hire was around 40 Euro for the day and it meant only having about 12 hours to spend in Montenegro.

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro surrounded by fortress walls and a bit of history. The Old City of Kotor is an ancient trade center, due to its fortified entrance to the sea. It's also a UNESCO World Natural and Historical Heritage Site and Montenegro's most famous town.

Because of their impressive medieval architecture and numerous cultural monuments, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Montenegro and one of my favorite cities in Europe.

Continuing our sailing around the world adventures, we sail through Montenegro's magnificent fjords, right up to the town of Kotor.

Kotor turns out to be one of our favourite towns so far in the trip, beautiful old buildings, great setting amongst the towering mountains, and a great vibe! The walk up to the fortress provides great views of the town from above, as well as the surrounding fjords.

And thanks to everyone who's provided us with tips on holding a SUP paddle, yes it turns out we've been holding it the wrong way around...! You're going to see this for a while until we catch up on videos.

Greening Colonial Heat Islands in Tropical Cities

A challenging renovation begins with a four-storey house of stuffy, poky rooms. Its balconies were unusable, because the house was enclosed behind security bars on all the the doors and windows. In their latest solve both problems with an imaginative renovation. The existing security fencing was taken off the windows and instead, a galvanized steel trellis was attached to the outer edges of the existing balcony, on which climbers are grown. The pleasant resulting ‘greenfall’ outside can be glimpsed through new openings in the floors deep inside the now renovated interiors. All that can be seen from the street is what appears to be a green wall climbing a trellis. It’s rapid growth has created many urban problems including an increase in noise and air pollution from motorbikes, and a shortage of green space. It is renovation project was designed to return greenery to the city, creating a more relaxing living environment for both the resident and the neighbors. The new interiors are now refreshed by an invigorating cool, green ambiance and the balconies are once again accessible to the family. A new green roof is also added, which helps cool the house below, while offering a real escape from the stresses of hot city life. Several trees are also cultivated at the ground floor at the bottom of the central stairway. The existing house in the center of the city had suffered from dim, dark, wet and moldy environment a typical condition for many of the older houses. This same space, formerly the darkest ground floor is now daylit by an opening in the floor above, creating a direct central light well from the former second balcony doors. A second lightwell houses the central stair connecting all four floors. What had been a four storey warren of tiny dark rooms is now lit down through its center, creating a livable home. Where before, the tropical city’s heat island effect was exacerbated by the concrete warmed in the sun. Now the facade is simply and economically covered. The architects feel this concept can be replicated easily throughout other rapidly growing cities to solve the climate problems of tropical urbanization.

You Won't Believe the giant super cell storms; or the dangerous fire tornadoes ! These are the 19 WEIRDEST Amazing Natural Phenomena !


Catatumbo (kat-uh-TUM-boe) Lightning
There’s only one place in the world where this atmospheric phenomenon occurs: over the mouth of the Catatumbo River in Venezuela. The ongoing, powerful flashes of lightning occur on average up to 297 days a year, and sometimes up to 280 times per hour! Scientists think the phenomenon could be due to wind patterns and local topography. Thunderclouds could be formed by warm Caribbean winds crashing into cooler air from the Andes … resulting in bursts of energy that could charge all the light bulbs in Latin America!

Waterspouts
There are two types of waterspouts ... Tornadic (tor-NAD-ic) waterspouts and fair weather. Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that are formed over water, or move from land to water … and can have destructive characteristics similar to a land tornado. They’re often accompanied by high winds and seas, and severe thunderstorms. Fair weather waterspouts aren’t associated with thunderstorms … they develop on the water’s surface and work their way upward … While the tornadic variety will develop downward in a thunderstorm. That narrow, vertical funnel-shape is caused by wind force changing direction as it goes higher, and can move at an average speed of 50 mph. Waterspouts can occur at any location over the world’s coastal regions.

Fire Tornado
It’s known by other names like Fire Whirl, Fire Twister, or Firenado. It’s a whirlwind that can occur when turbulent wind conditions and intense rising heat combine and form whirling eddies of air … those eddies contract into a structure resembling a tornado that sucks in combustible gases and burning debris. They’re often created when a firestorm generates its own wind, which can morph into a vortex of flame. Larger fire whirls can generate wind speeds over 100 mph and reach temperatures of 2000 degrees F (1093 C). They can last for over an hour and are extremely difficult to extinguish.

Aurora (thumb?)
This light display provides one of the most spectacular sights in Nature. In northern latitudes, the effect is usually called Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights), a named coined by Galileo. The southern counterpart is termed Aurora Australis (aw-STRAY-lis, or Southern Lights), and is almost identical to Aurora Borealis. The spectacular effect is a result of charged protons and electrons falling into the upper atmosphere where they lose energy … which emits light of varying patterns and colors. Changes in both auroral zones can occur simultaneously.

Volcanic Lightning
The shorthand for this phenomenon is, it’s a lighting storm that occurs as a volcano is erupting.
But exactly how that eerie effect originates is still not clear. Experts have conjectured that the lightning is the result of ice particles that form inside the plume … or whether it is caused by the ash itself, which can generate an electrostatic discharge. It’s possible that both mechanisms might create various forms of lighting within erupting volcanoes. Unlike the lightning that forms inside thunderclouds, volcanic lightning usually travels sideways, or travels upward through an ash cloud.

Supercell Storm (thumb?)
Depending on your mood, this one could look either cool or scary … But since it’s a supercell storm, it would not be so cool to get caught up in one. They’re the least common, but the most severe type of thunderstorm. They’re also called ‘rotating thunderstorms’ due to their swirling nature … and are among the very few cloud types that can produce tornadoes. With the proper pre-existing weather conditions, supercells can develop anywhere in the world. Along with tornados, this meteorological phenomenon can produce torrential rain, and massive amounts of hail.
