The Kathiresan kovil or Puthiya (new) Kathiresan kovil is a beautiful one easily recognizable from Galle Road in Bambalapitiya -the temple is dedicated to the war God Skanda or Murugan.
Kovils are typically vertical structures heavily adorned with images from Hindu mythology. On the corners of the roof of the Kathiresan kovil you'll find Bhairava the Frightful, a fierce manifestation of Shiva.
The men selling garlands at the front gate told us that the temple is likely more than a hundred years old.
The kovil has both old and new sections, some parts in bright colours and some in gold paint - it's all very grand and superfluous, but the craftsmanship of the artist behind the sculpted figures is amazing. At the back of the premises to the left are the Kathiresan Hall and further in Manikka Pillaiyar Kalai Rangam, halls where weddings are often carried out.
If you go round the back of the temple, you'll also find some cages of love birds and cockatoos and even a pretty peahen. We were told they're kept as pets by the temple keepers. Photography is not usually allowed at the temple but luckily we got there when the temple was closed to the public.
The inside of the temple is spacious and has separate shrines for deities, similarly decorated. Visitors bring garlands sold at the gates and sometimes even expensive materials to adorn the deities. In July/August, or the Tamil month of Aadi, the Kathiresan temples of Bambalapitiya and Pettah take part in the Vel Festival, where a chariot is carried from the New Kathiresan in Pettah to the one in Bamba, surrounded by a procession of performers and musicians. Some of the very passionate devotees pierce their faces with spears for the occasion.
Temple hours are usually from 5.30AM to 10.30AM, and 5.30PM to 8PM, every day, although we were told the temple is particularly teeming with crowds on Fridays and Saturdays. The Kathiresan kovil is a very cool place to visit if Hindu architecture is something that fascinates you.
TIP
Dress conservatively if you're visiting during temple hours.

Elefant in Colombo Temple
This elefant is chained with an extremely short chain in Gangaramaya temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka. One of the local visitors told me that the elefant is used for religious procession only few days a year. Rest of the time it spends chained to the tree in the temple and is an attraction for visitors. Sad story. If someone knows anything about the elefant and the temple please comment.

President welcomes Tamil Schoolchildren of North to Temple Trees ජනාධිපති මැදුරේදී යාපනයේ සිසුන් හරසරින් පිළිගැනෙති .
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces welcomed a group of schoolchildren from Northern Province at Temple Trees last evening (Sept 9). The schoolchildren who had come to attend National Sports Festival held in Colombo during this week were accompanied by Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare Hon. Douglas Devananda.
During the meeting, about 350 students of 27 schools along with their teachers had a cordial discussion with the President. The students informed the President about the problems they are facing at present. Also, they requested the President to liberate the North soon and to create a suitable environment to continue their education like in the East.
President Rajapaksa told the students that the liberation of North will be accomplished before long and promised that the steps would be taken to develop schools in the province. He said that it is so unfortunate that the people in the same country have to sail in ships to reach another part of the country when the roads are there.
Soon we will be able to strengthen the connection between Jaffna and Colombo by road. We will remove all the obstacles in near future , he added.
Minister Bandula Gunawardane, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge and President of the Tharunyata Hetak (A tomorrow for youth) organization Namal Rajapaksa participated for the occasion.

2009 Sri-Lanka Chilaw - Munneswaram temple Hindu
2009 Sri-Lanka Chilaw - Munneswaram temple Hindu
Munneswaram temple also Muneswaram, Muniswaram or Munnicuvaram is a popular Hindu temple which is north of the capital Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is close to the coastal fishing town of Chilaw. It is dedicated to main deity in Saivism namely Lord Siva and is one of the five ancient Sivan temples around the island.
Annual festival:
The annual Munneswaram festival is an important part of the Temple calendar. It lasts for 27 days usually in the months of August and September. The festival begins with the hoisting of the Temple flag. This is followed by 13 days of internal devale peraheras (Sinhalese for Temple processions) conducted in the outer area of the big temple.
Devotees visit the Temple to attend the pujas and make their offerings. Booths are specially erected outside for the sale of food, drink, brassware, pottery, cloth and holy images. On the penultimate day of the festival there is a very special car procession, when the god's image is placed upon a huge wooden juggernaut and pulled around the temple by devotees.
On the next and final day of the festival, two large chariots gaily decked are drawn by the devotees to the Deduru-oya, a local river for the diya-kepima or water-cutting ceremony. Images of Siva and his consort Parvati take pride of position between the two chariots. The statue of Ganesha goes in front with that of Skanda locally identified with deity of Kataragama following him.
After the water cutting ceremony the procession goes back to the Temple along a decorated route through Chilaw town, accompanied by traditional Hindu Nadeswaram music. On the way back the procession passes two temples the Ayyanar or Ayyanayake (Sinhalese version of the deity) temple dedicated to a presiding deity over forests, fields and irrigation reservoirs, and the Kali temple.
2009 Sri-Lanka Chilaw - Munneswaram tempio Hindu
