Dive into the history behind the legendary Michigan City Old Lighthouse Museum with Jim Retseck, President of Michigan City Historical Society. Originally maintained by the U.S. Light Keeping Service, this important monument now features artifacts, model ships, antique displays, and plenty more!
The Michigan City Lighthouse: The History of an Icon
Many people know the lighthouse, have taken pictures of it, or seen it's image spread across Michigan City - but how much do you really know about it? We took on the challenge of learning the history of Michigan City's landmark, how it represents the city, and why so many people are drawn to its beauty.

Old Lighthouse Museum
History is everywhere in the Old Lighthouse Museum! This restored 19th century lighthouse is filled floor-to-ceiling with artifacts that tell the tale of Michigan City. From Native American tools to nautical history, visitors can feel the stories of the past come alive through self-guided or guided tours. (We recommend the latter. Ask for Jim—he’s AWESOME.) As mighty and impressive as its former keeper Harriet Colfax, the Old Lighthouse Museum is a stop that isn’t to be missed on the waterfront of Michigan City.

Port Austin History: 1837 to 1957
This visual history documentary tells the story of the Port Austin village at the tip of the thumb and the early days of Port Crescent. The area has an Indian history, picturesque shorelines and early tourism to add to its legacy. Huron City, a lumber town, was also the summer home of Dr. Phelps and the Hubbard Families, now a historic site and museum. Lighthouses and Turnip Rock at Point Aux Barques are included in this history.

Texas Lighthouses by Richard Hall
Richard S. Hall, Ph.D., award-winning author/artist/illustrator, native Texan, graduate of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, and Texas A&M University, will be discussing the variety of lighthouse and lightship designs, from coastal lights to major beacons, that once graced the Gulf Coast. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Hall conducted extensive research in the National Archives, Texas and Louisiana State Archives, USCG HQ in Washington, and countless local sources along the Texas Coast. He is considered by many to be one of the leading experts on Texas lighthouses.
40 Mile Point Lighthouse Michigan
We bicycled to Michigan's 40 Mile Point Lighthouse from Hoeft State Park. It was about 3 miles one-way on a nice asphalt path. The path also runs south along the Lake Huron shoreline to Roger's City.
