The El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historical Monument, also known as Los Angeles Plaza Historic District and formerly known as El Pueblo de Los Ángeles State Historic Park, is a historic district taking in the oldest section of Los Angeles, known for many years as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula. The district, centered on the old plaza, was the city's center under Spanish (1781–1821), Mexican (1821–1847), and United States (after 1847) rule through most of the 19th century. The 44-acre park area was designated a state historic monument in 1953 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Olvera Street, known for its Mexican marketplace, was originally known as Wine Street. In 1877, it was extended and renamed in honor of Augustín Olvera, a prominent local judge. Many of the Plaza District's contributing historic buildings, including the Avila Adobe and Sepulveda House, are located on Olvera Street. In 1930, it was adapted by local merchants into the colorful marketplace that operates today.
The mural América Tropical (full name: América Tropical: Oprimida y Destrozada por los Imperialismos, or Tropical America: Oppressed and Destroyed by Imperialism, by David Siqueiros, was unveiled above the street in 1932. It was soon covered up to mask its political content. The Getty Conservation Institute has performed detailed conservation work on the mural to restore it and the America Tropical Interpretive Center opened to provide public access.

Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, and is part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Many Latinos refer to it as La Placita Olvera. Since 1911 it was described as Sonora Town.
Having started as a short lane, Wine Street, it was extended and renamed in honor of Agustín Olvera, a prominent local judge, in 1877. There are 27 historic buildings lining Olvera Street, including the Avila Adobe, the Pelanconi House and the Sepulveda House. In 1930, it was converted to a colorful Mexican marketplace...
Los Angeles was founded in 1781 on a site southeast of Olvera Street near the Los Angeles River by a group of Spanish pobladores (settlers), consisting of 11 families — 44 men, women, and children, accompanied by a contingent of soldiers — who had set out from the nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcángel to establish a secular pueblo along the banks of the Porciúncula River at the Indian village of Yang-na. The initial settlement was dubbed El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles... As the town grew, it eventually built its own parish church, which is today known as the Old Plaza Church. Unpredictable flooding forced settlers to move the town to higher ground. The town, complete with a church and rectangular plaza surrounded by house lots and planting fields, was placed in its current location in the early 19th century. Spanish colonial rule lasted until 1820. This period saw the first streets and adobe buildings of the town constructed. The town came under the control of newly independent Mexico in 1821. During this time of Mexican rule, which lasted until 1848, the Plaza area was the heart of Mexican community life in Los Angeles and center of an economy based upon cattle ranching and agriculture.
Hard times
For a time after the Mexican-American War and Gold Rush, the Plaza remained the center of a diverse town. The central street of the Plaza, Vine or Wine Street, was extended and had its name changed by City Council ordinance in 1877 to Olvera Street to honor Augustín Olvera, the first Superior Court Judge of Los Angeles County and long-time Olvera Street resident. In the 1880s, Los Angeles began quick expansion through a massive influx of Anglo and European settlers who arrived via the railroad. The old Plaza area became a forgotten remnant of the city's roots, and the remaining adobe and brick buildings within the Plaza area fell into disrepair as the civic center of the city shifted to present-day Temple and Main Streets.
A good view of the street during this period is to be found in Charlie Chaplin's 1921 film The Kid, which featured a number of scenes in it, mostly on the west side a few doors north of the Pelanconi House. At the time of the film, years before its makeover by Christine Sterling, it was hardly considered to be a proper street, but rather just a dingy, dirty alley.
Its decline as the center of civic life led to its reclamation by diverse sectors of the city's poor and disenfranchised. The Plaza served as a gateway for newly arrived immigrants, especially Mexicans and Italians. During the 1920s, the pace of Mexican immigration into the United States increased to about 500,000 per year. California became the prime destination for Mexican immigrants, with Los Angeles receiving the largest number of any city in the Southwest. As a result of this dramatic demographic increase, a resurgence of Mexican culture occurred in Los Angeles. It was within this social and political climate that Christine Sterling began her public campaign to save the old Francisco Avila Adobe from demolition and build up Olvera Street as a Disneyland-like center of Mexican romance and tourism.
Sterling's efforts to rescue the Plaza-Olvera area began in 1926, when she discovered the deteriorated conditions of the area, and in particular the Avila Adobe, the oldest existing home in the city. After raising the issue of the Avila Adobe with the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Sterling approached Harry Chandler, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times with a plan to restore...

La Plaza Cultural Arts Center at La Placita, Los Angeles CA
This video is about a history visit to Los Angeles, California on April 3, 2014. The sites visited were Union (Railroad) Station (1929), The Pico House and La Plaza Cultural Center at La Placita (1781-1815), or Olvera Street. Roz Snow and Dr. Ramon J. Martinez are the narrators.
La Placita is directly across from the train terminal. The other end of the terminal is the transit bus center which is on the corner of Ramirez and Vignes Streets. The owner and editor of to El Clamor Publico (the Public Outcry), Francisco P. Ramirez, was a brilliant and precocious seventeen-year old who published his Los Angeles journal as a champion of the Mexican people between 1855 and 1859.
He quickly acquired an excellent knowledge of English from American settlers. He also learned French, a skill taught to him by Jean Louis Vignes and his compatriots. Ramirez's mastery of French and English, together with his native Spanish, made him conversant in three languages before he was fourteen years old.

The Reserve is located in the basement of a 12-story Beaux Arts-style building originally constructed in 1924 at the cost of $2.5 million. The ground floor of the building originally housed Hellman Commercial prior to their merger with Merchants National Bank. In December 1928, Merchants National Bank was taken over by Bank of America, and for the four decades that followed, the building served as Bank of America’s Los Angeles headquarters. When Bank of America moved their headquarters in 1972, the ground floor bank remained in operation but saw a steady decline in business. In 1988, the location was closed for good .

Nearly three years after disclosing that he had Alzheimer's disease, the 86-year-old Reagan is still driven to his office every day in Los Angeles.
In a glass and chrome office building on the Avenue of the Stars, one fading star still lights up the lobby.
Looking fit, but older America's 40th president shows up for work as he does almost every day.
Office staffers say the former President is in good shape though media reports indicate that he is now in the middle stages of the memory-destroying neurological disease.
Although Reagan has slipped increasingly from public view as his Alzheimer's disease has advanced he glides through the Fox Plaza building in Century City, Los Angeles.
He holds court for four hours everyday and still plays golf on weekends.

Reagan has maintained an office on the 34th floor of this building since 1989, soon after vacating the oval office.
Nancy Reagan is said to visit him often at the office and once had her own office here as well.
Fans meanwhile, still seem elated to see him in the lobby or get a smile and a wave from him on occasion.

The Wilshire Grand Center in Downtown LA is the tallest building in the U.S. west of the Mississippi River at (1,099 feet or 335 meters). It is also the tallest building in the state of California.

In mid-2013, downtown was noted as a neighborhood with an increasingly hip and well-heeled residential population.[10]
Because of the downtown area's office market's migration west to Bunker Hill and the Financial District, many historic office buildings have been left intact, simply used for storage or remaining empty during recent decades. In 1999, the Los Angeles City Council passed an adaptive reuse ordinance, making it easier for developers to convert outmoded, vacant office and commercial buildings into renovated lofts and luxury apartment and condo complexes.
As of early 2009, 14,561 residential units[11] have been created under the adaptive reuse ordinance, leading to an increase in the residential population. With 28,878 residents in 2006[12], 39,537 in 2008,[13] and over 60,000 in 2017, Downtown Los Angeles is seeing new life and investment.
Staples Center, which opened in 1999, has contributed immensely to the revitalization plans, adding 250 events and nearly 4 million visitors per year to the neighborhood.
Since the opening of the Staples Center, the adjacent L.A. Live complex was completed, which includes the Microsoft Theatre and the Grammy Museum.
Los Angeles Metro Rail, a rail transit network centered on the downtown area, facilitates access to the city center, especially from the congested West Side.
Real estate developers and investors planned a $1.8 billion revitalization project along Grand Avenue, which included the development of Grand Park, a large city park and the construction of major city landmarks, including the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall and contemporary art museum The Broad, which opened in 2015.
On August 7, 2007, the Los Angeles City Council approved sweeping changes in zoning and development rules for the downtown area.
Strongly advocated by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the changes allow larger and denser developments downtown; developers who reserve 15% of their units for low-income residents are now exempt from some open-space requirements and can make their buildings 35% larger than current zoning codes allow.
In 2009 Bottega Louie opened on the first floor of the historic Brockman Building on Grand Avenue and Seventh Street. It contributed to the revitalization of DTLA by creating Restaurant Row, which has since brought numerous new restaurants and retail shops to the area.
In 2012, the upper 11 floors of the Brockman Building were bought with the intention of being sold as luxury lofts.
In October 2015, an outdoor lifestyle center, The Bloc Los Angeles, replaced the old enclosed Macy's Plaza.
Several labels of Warner Music moved into the Los Angeles Arts District in 2019 where the company had purchased a former Ford Motor Company assembly plant.
Broadway retail is transitioning from a broad mix of stores catering mostly to Hispanic immigrants and a burgeoning sneaker and streetwear retail cluster has emerged from 4th to 9th streets: Sneaker Row.
Multiple Olympic and Paralympic events will be held in DTLA during the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics

Encino is situated in the central portion of the southern San Fernando Valley and on the north slope of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is flanked on the north by Reseda and the Sepulveda Basin, on the east by Sherman Oaks, on the southeast by Bel-Air, on the south by Brentwood and on the west by Tarzana.
Population
The 2000 U.S. census counted 41,905 residents in the 9.5-square-mile Encino neighborhood — 4,411 inhabitants per square mile , among the lowest population densities for the city but average for the county. In 2008, the city estimated that the resident population had increased to 44,581.
In 2000 the median age for residents was 42, considered old for city and county neighborhoods; the percentages of residents aged 50 and older were among the county's highest.
The neighborhood was considered not especially diverse ethnically within Los Angeles, with a high percentage of white residents. The breakdown was whites, 80.1%; Latinos, 8.5%; Asians, 4.9%; blacks, 2.4%; and others, 4.1%. Iran (30.1%) and Russia (6.4%) were the most common places of birth for the 32.8% of the residents who were born abroad—an average percentage for Los Angeles.

The United States Postal Service operates the Encino Post Office at 5805 White Oak Avenue and the Balboa Van Nuys Post Office at 4930 Balboa Boulevard.
Education
Forty-six percent of Encino residents aged 25 and older had earned a four-year degree by 2000, a high percentage for both the city and the county. The percentage of those residents with a master's degree or higher was also high for the county.

Crenshaw Plaza Shooting (U.S)
On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at approximately 5:41pm, A knife wielding suspect was shot & killed by LAPD officers at Crenshaw Plaza in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States of America.
Los Angeles police said the incident occurred around 5:41 p.m. & the suspect was shot & pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses said it appeared the man was wielding a long knife & was shot after being told multiple times to drop the weapon.
I heard the officers patiently telling the guy, put it down, put it down, put it down, said Tim Williams, a former police officer who was at the mall & watched the events unfold, He kept gesturing & gesturing, he'd move toward them & move back, they still didn't shoot, they could have shot him then & they didn't.
He said the officers tried multiple times to get the man to surrender & only opened fire when it looked as if he was lunging toward people in the mall.
But when he took off towards where the people were, that's when they had to shoot him.
LAPD officials said they are not aware of anyone being injured by the man, but they are asking witnesses as well as any possible victims to contact them.
No officers were injured in the shooting & the investigation is ongoing.
It appears this was an isolated incident & not a mass knife attack situation, said LAPD Lt. Chris Ramirez.
The slain man is described as 25 to 35 years old, no name has been released as of Wednesday, April 11, 2018, the suspect was the eighth person shot by on-duty LAPD officers this year, six of whom were killed.
