Moravian Stars Still Shine Over Old Salem Town in Winston Salem NC
This video is about Moravian Stars Still Shine Above Old Salem Town in Winston-Salem, NC OldSalem.org, WinstonSalem.com,
The Moravian Star started as a geometry project for school boys in Niesky, Germany in the 1850s. A factory in Herrnhut now makes the 26-point stars in paper and plastic for Advent season to Epiphany to decorate sanctuaries, homes and doorways. They usually are illuminated from within to remember Christ as the light of the world and the Morning Star guiding the Magi in their search for the Christ.
Salem was founded in 1766 by the Moravians–a Protestant religious group that first organized in what is now known as the Czech Republic in the 15th century. The Moravians were active missionaries who established an earlier settlement in Bethlehem, PA, before settling “Wachovia” in the North Carolina backcountry in 1753. In the Wachovia Tract of nearly 100,000 acres, Salem was developed as the central administrative, spiritual, craft, and professional town surrounded by five outlying congregations.
The Town of Salem has a rich and deep history, with the restoration supported by many different sources of historical documentation and research. Core material is the primary source information published in the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina based on records held by the Moravian Archives, Southern Province in Winston-Salem. In addition, documentation such as private papers, historic photographs, and artistic renderings, as well as ongoing research of buildings, objects, and archaeological resources, have been critical to understanding the Town’s history.

Life in early North Carolina - Exploring Old Salem!
On a beautiful spring day we decided to take a drive up to Old Salem and see what this historic, living history museum was all about. Originally settled in the 1750s, Winston-Salem was once known as just Salem. The Moravians came here from Pennsylvania to build a Moravian church community. You were required to be a member of the church to love here. A lot has changed. Salem became Winston-Salem and is no longer a strict church community. But the heritage of the community lives on through Old Salem.

A Tribute to James A. Jim Gray - One of the Founders of Old Salem Museums & Gardens
After he chaired Forsyth County's bicentennial celebration in 1948, Jim Gray was asked to head the new organization formed to restore the town of Salem. This organization was first called the Investigating Committee. After Old Salem was established in 1950, Gray served two different terms as the museum's executive director. He resigned from the museum the first time, in part, to serve on the state highway board, a position that was instrumental in getting U.S. Highway 52 moved to Old Salem Road from Main Street. Gray also served as co-chair of a committee when the state legislature made major revisions to the North Carolina statues for local landmarks and historic districts in 1979. Until his death in 2003, Gray continued to be a strong supporter of Old Salem, often referring to the museum as his fourth child.
