Places to see in ( Bielefeld - Germany )
Bielefeld is a city in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe Region in the north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With a population of 336,352, it is also the most populous city in the Regierungsbezirk Detmold. The city of Bielefeld is in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe, a region powered by high-tech manufacturing and where multinational corporations have their headquarters. One company most people will know is Dr. Oetker, which was founded in Bielefeld and has a museum all about the brand.
Although Bielefeld isn’t on many tourist maps there’s still plenty to uncover in the city. Sparrenburg on the first ridge of the Tutoburg Forest, is a fearsome castle with underground tunnels and a keep to discover in summer. The three main medieval churches in the city centre have valuable Gothic and Renaissance art, while the gabled 16th-century Burgher houses around Alter Markt set an idyllic scene for the Christmas market.
Bielefeld’s top historical monument is a castle rising over the south side of the city from the Sparrenberg hill. The castle is on the eastern limit of the massive Tutoburg Forest, which goes on for miles to the west and south of the city. Sparrenburg’s origins go back to the 13th century and during the 30 Years’ War in the 1600s it was coveted by Dutch, Spanish, Swedish and Hessian forces.
The city’s fine arts museum is in a building designed by feted American architect Philip Johnson in the 1960s, and has galleries for art from the 20th and 21st centuries. On Rathausplatz the old town hall holds the offices of Bielefeld’s mayor, while the remainder of the city’s administration has been moved to the modern extension the Neues Rathaus, built in the 1980s.
Next to the Altes Rathaus and built around the same time, the Stadttheater is an Art Nouveau opera house with solemn Baroque influences. Bielefeld is the home of the international food processing company, Dr. Oetker. In the Mitte district the Ravensberger Spinnerei was at one point the largest flax spinning mill in Europe, with 20,000 spindles whizzing during the peak of production.
In the Teutoburg Forest, the Heimat-Tierpark Olderdissen is a zoo for European species, and a favourite day out for families. Maybe the most picturesque spot in central Bielefeld is where the city’s market traded until 1903. This compact square is framed by lovingly restored Renaissance gabled houses, once owned by Burghers. The Altstädter Nicolaikirche got its present Gothic design in the 14th century but dates back 100 years before that.
On the Kahlenberg hill to the southwest of the centre, the Botanischer Garten celebrated its centenary in 2012. The park has lots to delight horticulture enthusiasts, but for everyone else is a great pick for a calming stroll. The Neustädter Marienkirche was founded as a collegiate church, and its most striking feature is an unusually long, three-storey-high choir from the 14th century.
The largest square in Bielefeld is to the northeast of the Innenstadt, and for most of the city’s history was a parade ground on the edge of countryside. On Kolsterplatz in the Innenstadt, St. Jodokus is a Late Gothic former Franciscan monastery from the early 1500s. There’s a time capsule of 20th-century industrial history in a former tablecloth and bed linen factory on Viktoriastraße. From 21 November Bielefeld’s Christmas Market sweeps across the pedestrian squares and streets of the Innenstadt.

Highlights of Rostock & Mecklenburg
Depart the pier in the late morning for an approximate 2 1/2-hour scenic tour that covers the main attractions within the Warnemuende/Rostock area. Drive to Rostock past the typical Eastern Block living quarters of the area. Upon arrival in Rostock's center, you'll see its century's old red-brick architecture, experience the local Hanseatic ambience, pass the old 'New Market' with its beautiful City Hall, and St. Mary's Church Rostock's famous landmark. Continue past ruins of the old city walls and a former STASI prison (State Security of former East Germany) before continuing into the countryside. You'll pass by the Bad Doberan Cathedral, one of northern Germany's largest and mightiest medieval churches that towers above the rest of the village and nearby fields. From here you'll continue through lush countryside and small villages before returning to your ship. This is a perfect tour for guests with walking difficulties.
Note: The order of the sights may vary. Most shops in Rostock will be closed on Sundays.
The German Town That's Literally Breaking Apart
The town of Staufen, in the south-west of Germany, has a problem: a drilling operation in 2007 that went very wrong. Half a metre of movement might not sound like much, but in this town, that's enough for the buildings to crack and fall apart.
Thanks to Constantijn Crijnen for both suggesting the video and being the local expert! His channel's here:
And here's an in-depth academic paper explaining why and how it all happened, in far more detail than would work in a YouTube video:

Beautiful Glass and Wooden Elevators in Germany!
Both of these elevators were amazing! I wish I had my camcorder and a bit more time to take better videos, but this is the best I could do under the circumstances. Enjoy the video!
This is in the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The first elevator (glass one) is in a multi-use building with an apothecary (I believe it was Enzian Apotheke), and the second elevator (wooden one) is in another multi-use building across the street- one of the clients is Renzo's Restaurant, where we had some delicious pizza!
Places to see in ( Paderborn - Germany )
Places to see in ( Paderborn - Germany )
Paderborn is a city in western Germany. Romanesque Paderborn Cathedral is known for its large crypt and the Drei-Hasen-Fenster, a stone window carving in the nearby cloister. Multimedia exhibits on computer and digital technologies are the focus of the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum. In the northwest, Schloss Neuhaus is a centuries-old castle with formal gardens. Its grounds are home to art and natural history museums.
In the 8th century the First Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne founded Paderborn around the many springs that feed the River Pader. Paderborn remains a city of Medieval wonders like a cathedral holding the relics of the 4th-century Saint Liborius.
1,200 years after his remains were brought to the city St Liborius is still celebrated by a cheerful city festival in summer that mixes a fair with a holy procession. The bishopric established by Charlemagne became the seat of Imperial Prince-Bishops who wielded both political and religious power, and whose marvellous Renaissance palace is still standing tall. In the 10th century Paderborn was chosen as a residence by Holy Roman Emperor Henry II, and the remnants of his palace and a Byzantine-style church are open to visitors.
The mesmerising cathedral has been the site of a church since Charlemagne founded a bishopric at this very location in the 8th century. As we see it now, Paderborn Cathedral’s architecture is both Romanesque and Gothic and was completed relatively quickly during the 13th century. The largest computer museum in the world is hosted by the former premises of Nixdorf Computer AG. The HNF guides you through five millennia of information and communication technology, from the origin of the written word in Ancient Mesopotamia to 21st-century concepts like artificial intelligence, the Internet and robotics.
With an incredible variety of sacred art from the 900s to the 1900s, Paderborn’s diocesan museum is the oldest in the German speaking world. In 1964 the foundation walls of the Paderborn’s Kaiserpfalz (seat of the Holy Roman Emperor) were discovered next to the cathedral.
Just beside the cathedral and attached to the Kaiserpfalz is the oldest known hall church north of the Alps .The Bartholomäuskapelle is a Byzantine-style temple that has no architectural equivalent in Germany . It dates to roughly 1017 and was built not long after the Kaiserpfalz.
The refined Baroque church in the centre of the city was completed in just ten years between 1682 and 1692. Originally the Marktkirche was a counter-reformation Jesuit church, and the lavish ornamentation on the pulpit and altar reflects that spirit. At the start of the 17th century on the orders of the Prince-Bishop Dietrich von Fürstenberg the city replaced its old town hall with a magnificent new building in the Weser Renaissance style.
The residence for Paderborn’s Prince-Bishops, Schloss Neuhaus was begun in the 1200s and was extended over the next 300 years by each of its famous inhabitants. In a showroom on a trading estate in Paderborn’s northern outskirts is a museum endowed with a massive collection of vintage tractors.
At Am Abdinghof 11 is one of the oldest and finest half-timbered houses in Paderborn. This gabled, three-storey house dates from 1560, and what makes it obligatory is the decoration on the facade. In case you still have an appetite for medieval religious architecture, the Busdorfkirche is another enigmatic building consecrated in 1036 by Bishop Meinwerk.
Paderborn’s answer to the problem of medieval water supply was to build small stone reservoirs or “Kümpe” in its squares. Now, Paderborn has the distinction of being on the shortest river in Germany. A left tributary of the Lippe, the Pader is only four kilometres long, despite being broad and having a high volume. Once a Benedictine monastery, the Abdinghofkirche was also founded in the 11th century by Bishop Meinwerk, and has two Romanesque towers looming over the Paderquellgebiet. For nine days beginning on the first Saturday after 23 July Paderborn is given over to a festival going back to 836 when the relics of St Liborius of Le Mans were brought to the city.

Gregory Porter's official bio:
A two-time Grammy-winner and six-time nominee, Gregory Porter has undoubtedly become jazz’s most celebrated male vocalist, “a jazz singer of thrilling presence, a booming baritone with a gift for earthy refinement and soaring uplift” (The New York Times). After the success of his 2010 debut Water and follow-up Be Good, Porter broke through to mainstream stardom with his Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit, winning the 2013 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. He repeated the Grammy and chart success of Liquid Spirit with 2016’s Take Me to the Alley, and his 2017 tribute to Nat “King” Cole, Nat “King” Cole & Me, is poised to earn Porter his third Grammy nod.
Raised in the hardscrabble city of Bakersfield, the budding vocalist grew up with seven siblings who all sang and worked in their mother’s skid row mission. A chance encounter led to Porter’s recording debut on Hubert Laws Remembers the Unforgettable Nat King Cole, a 1998 album that earned him an audition for the Broadway-bound musical It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues. Growing up around rollicking tent revivals offered ideal training for a revue tracing the history of the blues, and he got the gig. Porter brings the same soul-stirring authority to jazz settings, revealing powerful truths with heart and grace.

Take Me To The Alley lyrics:
Well they build their houses in preparation for the king
And they line the sidewalks
With every sort of shiny thing
They will be surprised
When they hear him say
Take me to the alley
Take me to the afflicted ones
Take me to the lonely ones
That somehow lost their way
Let them hear me say
I am your friend
Come to my table
Rest here in my garden
You will have a pardon
Take me to the alley
Take me to the afflicted ones
Take me to the lonely ones
That somehow lost their way
Let them hear me say
I am your friend
Come to my table
Rest here in my garden
You will have a pardon
They will be surprised
When they hear him say
Take me to the alley
Take me to the afflicted ones
Take me to the lonely ones
That somehow lost their way
Let them hear me say
I am your friend
Come to my table
Rest here in my garden
You will have a pardon
You will have a pardon
Take me to the alley
Take me to the afflicted ones
Take me, take me, take me, take me, take me

The Miracle of Leipzig
Nov. 02, 2014
Historians, participants and former diplomats discuss a retrospective of the 25th anniversary of the end of the Cold War, when 70,000 people in Leipzig, Germany, whose chants of “We are the people!” and nonviolent demands for freedom paved the way for the fall of the Berlin Wall one month later on Nov. 9, 1989.
Osnabrück City of Peace
Osnabrück's political and cultural life believes in the maxim: The task of peace - committed to peace. In 1648, the 30 Years' War was declared to an end in the Rathaus des Westfälischen Friedens (Town Hall of the Westphalian Peace). Every year this event is commemorated by the local children with a hobby horse Parade.
